ID of beautiful tall tree/shrub

About 5/6 foot tall in a container. Does anyone have any ideas?

Could it be a type of Magnolia?

That's a good thought, just googled and the leaves look similar.

Looking for a good container tree to provide some screening from neighbour.

Looks to me like a variety of mock orange or philadelphus. Does it smell gorgeous? There are loads of kinds with different sized flowers.

Looks like syringa to me - smells lovely - but not sure it is best in a pot. From what I remember, it is mainly a climbing plant.

I don't think it's a syringa. It looks very like a philadelphus, or if not scented, a type of cornus.

If it is Philadelphus, it's deciduous btw - not sure if that will affect your decision?

Hmm might do. Struggling to find something evergreen and tall that'll go in a pot to act as a screen.

Clematis Montana if it's got something to climb up? Or Akebia (semi evergreen), also with support.

I thought it might be dogwood as well.

I think you're right, aircooled - flowers look too flat for Philadelphus.

How big do they get though?

Can I fit one in a tiny suburban garden? And how frost hardy are they?
I can look it up, but I would like to hear people's experiences.

Which, Chardonnay? The Cornus or the cream Akebia?

That Cornus can get to 5/6m high eventually. My Akebia is trained up a 6ft fence with trellis at the top. East facing garden in the South East, neutral/alkaline soil. Quite sheltered though so we don't usually lose anything except some v tender plants to frost. Akebia seems to love it there and goes wild in the spring.

can you nip down into the courtyard...and see if there is a label on it? You could just knock the door as a courtesy, or pretend to be canvassing with a pile of leaflets

Sorry, Cornus. I think it might be too big for me. I will need something more compact, but don't want a magnolia, they are everywhere.

I have an Akebia, but it's the chocolate variety. Or rather did have one, I lost it over the winter.
