Help! My DH just strimmed my beautiful quince

We recently planted (early Feb) a bare-root Quince tree. It has taken beautifully & I love it.

Unfortunately Dh bought a petrol Strimmer... whilst using it he's accidently strimmed the bottom of the Quince cutting into the bark. We've taped it up, but is there anything we can do to save it?

Leave the bastard.

saggybaps · 15/04/2012 20:59

It came close...

Seriously, though...I feel your pain. I'd contact the RHS or some such tomorrow. There are garden designers on here who might be able to help.

Good luck with it.

Mmmm...quince...

OctopusSting · 15/04/2012 21:00

Did anyone else wince when they read the title? Grin

CremeFraiche · 15/04/2012 21:00

had to snigger at the thread title

the dirty bastard

LadyEmmaHamilton · 15/04/2012 21:00

Snigger

Sorry OP, not helpful I know, but I couldn't help it Grin

hellymelly · 15/04/2012 21:00

I would think it will heal, unless it is very bad. I really want a quince, they are so lovely, so i feel your pain!

saggybaps · 15/04/2012 21:01

Ha ha ha - I'm currently 37 weeks pg... could do with a strim! Grin

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 15/04/2012 21:02

bloody hell, that's exotic OP. Does he make a habit of it?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/04/2012 21:02

"Dh strimmed my beautiful quince" - that just sounds so rude! Or I have a very durty mind Blush

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/04/2012 21:03

Are we talking about an ornamental quince (chaenomeles) or the fruit tree (cydonia oblonga)? Has your manic strimmer-wielding DH just nicked the bark or actually cut into the stem?

themarriageplot · 15/04/2012 21:04

See...I knew it...

saggybaps · 15/04/2012 21:07

It's the fruit tree variety, he's cut through the bark but not right through the stem.

OP posts:
ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/04/2012 21:18

I didn't think he could have cut right through the stem as otherwise he'd be under the patio the tree would just be a stump, but do you think the cut goes deep or is it a superficial nick?

The marvellous RHS has advice about quinces here. I would have thought the only real worry would be disease entering through the cut, but as - to judge by this - quinces aren't particularly prone to disease, I would guess it'll be ok. The RHS advice service is only available to members, but you could ring whoever supplied the tree for their advice.

shrinkingnora · 15/04/2012 21:20

Best. Thread title. Ever.

Hope your quince recovers.

saggybaps · 15/04/2012 21:22

Thanks so much Maud will read the RHS info. It really has the beginnings of a beautiful tree. If he wasn't so gutted himself, he certainly would be under the patio.

Have you ever heard of something you can paint on?

Snigger

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/04/2012 21:23

There are (or used to be) things called winter washes which were supposed to kill the bugs. Let me go and rummage ....

AnEcumenicalMatter · 15/04/2012 21:24

I didn't notice that this was in gardening (didn't actually know there was a gardening topic) and thought that 'stimmed my quince' was a eupahism for something Grin

I do hope your quince's injuries aren't terminal.

saggybaps · 15/04/2012 21:30

& thank-you for all you support... Wink Grin (shakes head)

OP posts:
ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/04/2012 21:32

Hmm. This is intended for killing bugs rather than disease and, besides, it's not the right time of year.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/04/2012 21:33

Any serious gardener would know that there is far greater smut potential than strimmed my quince, which is really quite mild

saggybaps · 15/04/2012 21:41

Thanks Maud. Will leave it as it is & hope it survives.

OP posts:
Iwantcandy · 15/04/2012 21:46

Example please Maud

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/04/2012 21:48

Well, it amuses me that I have Nelly Moser in a bed with the Bishop of Llandaff.
