A new thread for the new school and college year. A friendly thread for parents of those going into year 12 in September 2025.

I’m jumping on now as I know I won’t be able to find you all later! thank you for the new thread@QueenMabby Here’s to 6th Form!

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 25/08/2025 16:14

OMG... leaving the Secondary School section behind... that feels very grown-up. 😱

I am soooo ready for term to start. This post-GCSE holiday has been very long and I'd like the peace and quiet back. Thought DD was the 8th and then a miraculous email arrived saying there was also an induction week starting next Monday. 😈

icanbewhatiwant · 25/08/2025 16:33

I feel a bit mean as we are leaving Ds home, dh and I are going on our first ever proper holiday without dc’s on 4th Sept. We went away a couple of years ago for one night without them. We have rarely holidayed as dh was a farmer and couldn’t get away. We only started going with the dc’s in 2019. Then the older 2 only came twice. Dh won’t fly so only in the Uk. This time we will be driving through 7 countries with a group of us from dh’s car club. We are sort of looking forwards to it. I’m worried about leaving ds3 at home to cook for himself, ds1 (24) and ds2 (21) will be home too. But they won’t cook for ds3 so he’s got to get on with it. He’ll have only been at 6th form 2 days when we go. But he’s been at the school since year 7 so I can’t see a problem there. Hopefully they will all be fine and our 2 dogs.

Hello everyone! I've just caught up on results day thread - we went straight to a festival from picking up GCSE results and have had no mobile service ever since. A complete rollercoaster of stuff on there... but @OhCrumbsWhereNow I was particularly thrilled to see your Dd's music - so well deserved...

Can't believe my baby is going into sixth form. She's had a lovely time dancing til 3am with her mates for the last three nights. and is totally exhausted.

Lots of luck to your DD for 6th form... I remember back when she moved schools so brilliant to see how well she's done with all the changes and her fab results.

HereComesYourMam · 25/08/2025 17:06

Joining in - thanks for the new thread @QueenMabby 😀 Another one here who is more than ready for the end of the summer hols, we're all looking fwd to normal service resuming. Although think DS might have a shock at the extra level of work required for A Levels so maybe not quite so normal!

SuperSue77 · 25/08/2025 17:17

When do they all start their new year? Mine goes in on 2 Sept! Along with the new year 7s with everyone else starting the day after. No more uniform for mine either 😬 She has used AI to create an outfit for each day so she doesn’t have to think about it 🤣

Oblomov25 · 25/08/2025 17:20

Thanks @QueenMabbyas ever.

Oblomov25 · 25/08/2025 17:20

Ds is 4th September.

Oblomov25 · 25/08/2025 17:21

Please can I just check, those that their dc are staying on at their old school, for 6th form. Those that have been given bridging work :
please advise, the bridging work that is supposed to be done, for the first day back in a week or so, are we all back on sept 4th?
my ds 2 has been given . 2 x A'level past papers, per subject.
But how are they supposed to do that, when they haven't been taught the syllabus?

Oblomov25 · 25/08/2025 17:26

@NotDonna
Did dd enjoy the festival?

Ds had a fab time and one of the mums dropped him home at 3am! About 35 of them got the train from here to the festival.

He said he was glad he wasn't camping (we are seasoned caravan'ers and are going to Dorset yet again this coming weekend) but he said it was so dusty that he couldn't have slept in tent. Even one day his throat hurt, ears, nose covered in dust.

He said Travis Scott was superb and they all had the best time EVER.

Oblomov25 · 25/08/2025 17:38

@icanbewhatiwant
love the sound of the driving holiday.

ChannelLightVessel · 25/08/2025 17:41

DD is back in on 2nd, so only a week left. Doesn’t seem long enough, but then she spent 7 weeks at her Dad’s.
DD still not sure whether to do Spanish or Chemistry for her fourth A level; she’s down for the former atm. Chemistry would go better with the other three (Maths, Further Maths, Physics) but she worries about the practicals and has been keen for several years to study Linguistics at university.

My DD was at the same festival I guess 😁 I was worried about letting her go last year, but I’m so glad I did. She and her friends had an amazing time, although they said the dust was insane. She and her friends did camp and she is hoarse! I said probably better than rain and mud 😁

As long as she doesn’t want to do chemical engineering or some such thing I’d say she she do what she is passionate about and do Spanish. She will have three sciences which she will need for science degrees.

DS was at Reading yesterday just for the day. Had a great time . Poor DH went to pick them up at a prearranged place and took him an hour to do the last mile. Hopefully next year they can drive themselves there!

waitingquietly · 25/08/2025 18:14

I was trying to tag @eccle80 from the previous thread - my DS also has a 9 in paper 1 and a 6 in paper 2 for physics - edexcel … he would need about 15 marks to move any boundaries though so I think it’s unlikely and probably best to leave things alone . I’ve only spotted the range thanks to @MrsHamlet … who has also stopped me wondering about his very surprising History as all 4 papers are consistent . For me personally it really is time to move on … I think I’ve mulled it all over far too much and wasted far more thought on it all than my much more pragmatic son ! Hope everyone has enjoyed their festivals and hoping everyone enjoys the last few days of freedom .

BellaI · 25/08/2025 18:14

College starts properly on Monday 8th but has to go the next 2 Thurs for registration/induction. I’m so looking forward to this fresh start for her as HS has been a difficult and fairly toxic experience. She has managed to find others going via social media so is already on a girls group chat and finding girls with similar interests. Really hoping she will settle well and enjoy 6th form. Feel like she’s been at home for months now!

MrsHamlet · 25/08/2025 18:17

Please can we all stop talking about the start of term... I'm not ready for that 🤣

She had the best time. She went straight after results day at school for the silent disco on Thursday night. Her and a friend had full weekend tickets but didn’t want to camp so her friend’s dad dropped them off each midday and collected at 3am & DD stayed with her friend. They live around 30 mins closer than us but still a good hour drive each way. For four days!! Including 3am. I know!! Not something I would have done. They could have at least got the train to the venue! Even the bus replacement on Sunday only took 2hrs so hardly difficult. Anyway she had a blast and can’t talk.

Mmm… I’m thinking they’ll be going to watergate bay next year for boardies!! They’ll be no choice but camp there - no picking up at 3am princesses!

NotDonna · 25/08/2025 18:34

DD has enrolment day on Monday. This time next week!!! I thought we had two more weeks. So just like MrsHamlet I’m defo not ready for this! & I don’t even teach. I think DD enrols on Monday 1st but starts Wed 3rd along with yr7’s. Then everyone in on the Thursday. Need to focus on her getting back to normal sleeping patterns too!

Oblomov25 · 25/08/2025 19:00

@NotDonna@SB1971
so glad our dc had such a great time at the festival. Ds said was just the best event he'd ever been to.

I wonder if @achangeofnameisasgoodasaresteas at the same one?

Thejollypostlady · 25/08/2025 19:33

Please can I join?
DS off to university. DD starting year 12. She starts on 3rd September. She’s very ready to start.

Cycleaway · 25/08/2025 19:46

We are still waiting on confirmation of a sixth form here - eek! DS is hoping to move school, and they’ve been massively oversubscribed, so are having to review all the applications and timetable options - he was meant to find out on Friday, but it’s Wednesday now 😬 He didn’t accept offers from any other sixth form, as this is where he wants to go, and he improved on the mocks marks and the conditional offer they gave him. I think he should be okay, but it’s still a worry he seems to be in the minority that hadn’t accepted multiple places - I feel really bad that I didn’t tell him to do the same.
