2025 A Level Results Day and Sept Uni Starters - All Welcome

1000 replies

SlightlyJaded · 25/07/2025 22:26

I couldn't see board specifically dedicated to results day for our DC who have sat A levels this spring. And I know some of us STILL have questions about Uni starters.

DS has Liverpool as his first choice and Notts Trent as his insurance - both to study History. Anyone who recognises me from previous boards might remember the hell we went through with DD a couple of years ago, so DS has applied quite a lot of caution to his choices - perhaps too much, perhaps not enough. Neither of us have any idea what to expect with his results. He has genuinely fluctuated between a D and an A in some of his mocks....

I still haven't done anything about accommodation which is one of the reasons I am starting this thread.

But mostly, it's for nail biting, relief, tears, support, advice and all the other things needed to get us through the next few weeks.

Welcome :)

@PennywisePoundFoolish I am doing a masters at Exeter and the communication has been excellent, the staff super friendly and keen to help. Way more than my undergrad (although that was in 2013!). I think your DS will be very well supported.

That's brilliant to hear. I'd suggested Exeter at his first choice tbh, but he was understandably swayed by the aspirational offers.

We're looking into the accommodation and DS2 is seeming quite chipper now. He's recently restarted antidepressants so I'll be keeping a close eye on him.

Ds going to uni of Sheffield, Japanese studies
he is autistic and was written off at primary and school refusal at secondary so this is a big achievement. Got a distinction in his BTEC
This makes me glow it’s happiness for him

Hi ds is going to Lancaster, it was his back up. Does anyone know what we do about accomodation please?

Congrats! You must be so proud. It's lovely to hear someone do well at BTech when so much focus today is on A-levels only. (My DD is waiting for GCSE results ahead of starting a Level 3 BT in Sept, so I'm v. interested in BT results!)

Celebrating here !
DS has got his offer of engineering at Durham .
So delighted for him .
He has just gone off school to get his actual results
Has anyone got any insight into Durham student life ( he’s got a place at Stevenson college ) ?

DS is also going to Lancaster as his firm choice. He was sent a link via email to choose his accommodation - he got two preferences. You need to complete it within a deadline so keep an eye out (if the system is the same as via firm choice).

Omedetou!!!! Love this! Hope he has a great time at Sheffield.

Thank you, ds' firm was aspirational, he's really happy with Lancaster. We all loved it on the open days.

DS got his grades and is off to Bath. So happy for him (and so relieved!)

Fantastic result, well done to your DS.

Quick question - if offer grades are met, why would ucas say uni are still deciding? Very stressed here “

@OneTwoFiveSix - that doesn’t sound right. If the offer is met, that should be sufficient. I would suggest calling the uni admissions team.

Has anybody else’s teens got vastly lower than their predicted grades?

Yes!

If Lancaster was his insurance they will email him about accommodation. He should also proactively look on their accommodation website as there may be information on there.

My daughter got into Lancaster via Clearing a few years back & loved it.

singalongforever · 14/08/2025 09:50

DS very disappointed to miss his firm and get his insurance- Lancaster. He's adamant he's not going there and now won't talk about it at all.

Pinepeak2434 · 14/08/2025 09:52

My son headed off to meet friends to collect grades together, he hasn’t let us know yet! 🤯

Lots will … these type of threads are lovely but more people post whose children have done well.

If the results are very disappointing they should try to talk to the school about whether remarks are a good idea. Also look online at unis with spaces in Clearing and get phoning them because spaces do fill fast.

Sorry to hear that. Anything suitable in clearing that he would prefer?

KarateSchnitzel · 14/08/2025 09:55

DD was predicted BBB and got A*AB. Couldn't be prouder of her. She's off to York in September. She's worked so hard for this.
Well done to all those who got their choices today! Hope those that didnt get what they wanted dont beat themselves up for too long. It really isn't the end of the world. And this is coming from someone who was kicked off ALevels but still achieved 2.1 Law Degree.

That's a real shame. There are some very good offers in Clearing if he would still like to go this year.

And a gap year is not a bad thing - my DD got valuable work experience and a good wodge of savings out of hers.

butteredfly · 14/08/2025 08:05

Morning - what does it mean if it says your university is still deciding on your application?

Are you happy to share the uni?

They have to accept if the grades are right.

If they're not right, they may be seeing how many actually accept before making a decision. Durham is particularly bad on that and can leave ages before making a decision.
You can choose to reject them and go straight to insurance, which means they have the security and can get accommodation sorted.

The Student Room website should be able to help if they need help knowing what to do and how to do it; often better than schools.

Much as I think Lancaster is a great uni, it is his decision.

I would just let him know ( if he doesn’t already) that he can phone other unis with vacancies in Clearing to see if they will offer him something he prefers. You’re not encouraged to do this by UCAS but it is possible.

If he gets a better offer in writing ( email) he would then need to ask Lancaster to release him, which they would.

Pices · 14/08/2025 09:59

DS got BBD and still got into Exeter even though his offer was AAB! His secondary school is properly dire so they seem to have taken that into account.

SO lovely to read this (not the written off at primary / secondary etc)

Proof that the right course / mode of study allows a child to flourish . Also proof that children develop at different rates.

DS got AB and DIstiction today and is going to Loughborough.

Fortunately, his primary school particularly never wrote him off (he barely spoke in his reception year , and hated writing etc )
He was in booster groups in KS2 but reached required SATS levels .

If he had been written off it could have been a very different story.

Well done to your DS and good luck

Not that I can. His dream course was a 4 year integrated masters in maths. Can only see two unis offering it in clearing.

Jenkibuble · 14/08/2025 10:01

I have 2 starting uni in Sept (DD has done an Access course these past 2 years as her A levels were not as hoped)

One is going to Loughborough (DS) and one to Manchester Met (DD)

I will be on bread and water supporting them £ :)
