2025 A Level Results Day and Sept Uni Starters - All Welcome

1000 replies

SlightlyJaded · 25/07/2025 22:26

I couldn't see board specifically dedicated to results day for our DC who have sat A levels this spring. And I know some of us STILL have questions about Uni starters.

DS has Liverpool as his first choice and Notts Trent as his insurance - both to study History. Anyone who recognises me from previous boards might remember the hell we went through with DD a couple of years ago, so DS has applied quite a lot of caution to his choices - perhaps too much, perhaps not enough. Neither of us have any idea what to expect with his results. He has genuinely fluctuated between a D and an A in some of his mocks....

I still haven't done anything about accommodation which is one of the reasons I am starting this thread.

But mostly, it's for nail biting, relief, tears, support, advice and all the other things needed to get us through the next few weeks.

Welcome :)

SO lovely to read this (not the written off at primary / secondary etc)

Proof that the right course / mode of study allows a child to flourish . Also proof that children develop at different rates.

DS got AB and DIstiction today and is going to Loughborough.

Fortunately, his primary school particularly never wrote him off (he barely spoke in his reception year , and hated writing etc )
He was in booster groups in KS2 but reached required SATS levels .

If he had been written off it could have been a very different story.

Well done to your DS and good luck

My goddaughter's parents agonised all through primary school because she was on the lower tables and in the easy spellings group.

She's now a Vet.

That's a real shame. There are some very good offers in Clearing if he would still like to go this year.

And a gap year is not a bad thing - my DD got valuable work experience and a good wodge of savings out of hers.

That's something I've considered but his subject is maths and I heard they dont like you to take a year out in that.

Much as I think Lancaster is a great uni, it is his decision.

I would just let him know ( if he doesn’t already) that he can phone other unis with vacancies in Clearing to see if they will offer him something he prefers. You’re not encouraged to do this by UCAS but it is possible.

If he gets a better offer in writing ( email) he would then need to ask Lancaster to release him, which they would.

Thank you. I also think it's a great uni. He hasn't even visited it yet. I can see they have an open day tomorrow and I've suggested we go and look.

Has anybody else’s teens got vastly lower than their predicted grades?

Yes very disappointing

Ditto - DD travelled, and qualified as a swim teacher. Has given her experience with working with kids . Now she is about to begin teacher training.

ilovebagpuss · 14/08/2025 10:04

DD is off to Lancaster to do languages ABB achieved and her B in EPQ. She needed BBB so all good and the course had dropped in clearing but really you would want a B for the language of choice.
So relieved as she didn't really have anything or anywhere else she wanted to go for.

Not that I can. His dream course was a 4 year integrated masters in maths. Can only see two unis offering it in clearing.

Birmingham and Leeds are offering this - would either of those appeal?

Just a quick 'hello' and my middle son (still waiting for youngest to find out his results as he's at work) has an integrated masters in maths and he started on a standard maths degree and was allowed to switch up to the masters after first year as his grades were good. Any chance your son would try this? Just need a uni that does the integrated degree I suppose? If he's not bad after first year they would welcome another year of his money with open arms. They are business' after all.

Congrats! You must be so proud. It's lovely to hear someone do well at BTech when so much focus today is on A-levels only. (My DD is waiting for GCSE results ahead of starting a Level 3 BT in Sept, so I'm v. interested in BT results!)

BTECs are great - NOT an easy option, but suit a different learning style ! recognised by the vast majority of unis too ( Bath, Loughborough amongst others !)

Son was relieved he got his oBTEC ut of the way so only had 2 A levels to focus on for revision!

Could he do it incrementally? Find a 3 year BSc at any uni that offers the MMath and transfer onto it later? Or do the BSc and take a separate taught Masters which would give him loads more options.

I was on one of these courses, admittedly a long time ago, and the group of people who ended up with a masters was very different to the group who started on the MMath course.

Letsgetthiswrongagain · 14/08/2025 10:17

DD got her second choice of Leeds, missed out on Warwick by 3 marks. She’s more upset by her History mark as she hated the Russia paper and that’s what let her down. Called Birmingham and got in through clearing but I think she’s settled on Leeds now.

Thank you, ds' firm was aspirational, he's really happy with Lancaster. We all loved it on the open days.

My son is at Lancaster. Loves it. Its a great uni

Not vastly but still lower than expected on two of them which was a bit of a shock but still got their first choice so it's actually fine

My D got A*AA and is off to Warwick! Super proud as she had to repeat Y10 after spending several months in hospital battling anorexia, and took her smaller than usual number of GCSE’s in a special provision school.

Congratulations to your daughter. Thank you for sharing this. Amazing and I'm sure will give a lot of people inspiration.

My son received a C in his strongest A Level subject, where he has consistently achieved A grades. Given his track record, this result seems out of character, and I’m wondering whether we should request a review, as it doesn’t seem right. His uni places still say pending.

PennywisePoundFoolish · 14/08/2025 10:21

We're going around in circles wrt accommodation. Not helped by DH suddenly getting involved and telling DS2 he needs a studio. DS2 is very worried about money. He doesn't want to wait for university accommodation and just wants to book something asap

I've got to take DS1 to the GP so lawd knows what the situation will be by the time I get home 😬

Hi @SuperTrooper1111!!, and CONGRATULATIONS @TobytykeDS!! That is such a fantastic achievement!! I am with @SuperTrooper1111in that my DS is hopefully off to do Level 3 BTEC and also waiting for his GCSE results. He is AuDHD and also totally written off so far. I hope your DS enjoys every second of his AMAZING Sheffield Japanese life!!! And has a fabulous time studying out there ( assuming he’ll go)! It’s also fab to see BTEC made mention of, and their success!! 🥳

I hope you also are so very proud. It’s a bit crap sometimes when you recognise how much harder some things are for your DC than others… just by virtue of how their little brains are wired (mine is epileptic, too….one Consultant when he was about three, and already on Autism/ADHD diagnosis pathway, gave a great explanation as to “ wiring gone a bit awry”…. but gave very inspirational speech as to how our DC with such difficulties can still go on to achieve their dreams…. It will just be sadly a little harder for them…… and, guess what?! Your DS GOT THERE!!! Bloody well done!!!!!

I’m obviously overjoyed for all the celebrations here .. and share pain for the sadness and disappointments.. I speak, like a pp, from previous experience.. I totally “was cooked” (?🤷‍♀️😹!) by my first round of A Levels, scoring a massive string of U’s!!! Totally sh@t show. But, I picked myself up, started new subjects at a crap college in a converted MFI showroom in a year, went on to get a Law Degree ( also like pp!) and become a lawyer… so, please, however awful things may look today, take pause and it will take a rethink, but you can still be happy..😃 .. Good Luck to those in that position..

But, @Tobytyke…… please say 🥳 to your OUTSTANDING SON!!!!!!!!! And yourself!!!!!

Your posting will have given hope and inspiration not just to @SuperTrooper1111and me, but so

AgentJohnson · 14/08/2025 10:24

I am in the Netherlands and DD has applied to TU (Technical University) Delft. She resat a Maths exam yesterday and won’t get her result until after freshers week, which means she will attend freshers week without knowing for certain if she’s accepted on the course, just when I thought the system couldn’t get more blizzard. I can’t read her on how she thinks her chances are but I am doing my very best to stay calm. Fingers crossed.

Good luck everyone!!!!!!!!

DS got his place at Bath 3A* and A. Both happy and relieved. Good luck to everyone else.

Huge congrats. DD just graduated from Bath and oh my did she have a wonderful few years. Hope your DS enjoys it as much!

Bonniebonnie · 14/08/2025 10:26

My DC got their Cambridge offer. They are extremely happy and relieved - although a bit fixated on one grade that was lower than expected in their best subject. 3 marks off boundary and school pushing for remark...while it doesn't matter for our outcome thankfully, it does seem like there were some oddities this year, if that helps reassure anyone!

MrsBucketHat · 14/08/2025 10:29

Many congratulations to all of your DCs. I got my A-level results back in 2001 and can still remember the nerves! Such an exciting time for you all.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 14/08/2025 10:04

Yes very disappointing

I hope your DC are okay. It's hard trying to sort out what to do now when everyone around you seems to be celebrating. Fingers crossed they can find a path through the disappointment and get a uni place/apprenticeship/job/whatever their next step is.

Brienneoftarthismyhero · 14/08/2025 10:31

@SheilaFentiman any news on Durham? My DD and BF both got into. Keeping everything crossed you have same happy news

Oh dear, he doesn't need a studio. Being in a flat with a shared kitchen/living area but with your own bedroom is more social. As well as cheaper.

It would also be more social in uni accommodation than private accommodation. Try to get your son to panic a bit less (easier said than done) - Lancaster have a lot of accommodation it's just a panic on results day trying to allocate everyone.

Private accommodation is also plentiful in Lancaster, it's not like some other cities.

DS hated that paper too. He's a bit disappointed in his History mark having done pretty well at GCSE.
