Thread 35 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 'What They Did on Their Summer Holidays'

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/07/2022 11:57

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

@crazycrofter hope Maccies interview goes well.
@Delphigirl ah what a shame. I bet you’d rather they had waited until home to give you that news!
Your holiday aside from that sounds idyllic. One day that will be me. I have my eye on October half term.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 05/08/2022 07:32

Both our DC are still coming with us on holiday although after this year's DD asked to go somewhere with more teenagers to mix with next time (we had a self catered apartment in a town not a resort complex). So maybe will be doing something different next year - we've never done resort / AI holidays as they tend to be in places I'd find too hot in July/August.

Benjispruce4 · 05/08/2022 07:37

We’re on holiday on a city break very late August. Last all 4 of us holiday probably.

ProggyMat · 05/08/2022 07:44

@crazycrofter DD finds it quicker to learn/ revise vocab on Quizlet. She’ll just have to bite the bullet and pay to subscribe and vent at me! 😂
Good luck to your DD for her interview 🍀

EspeciallyDeIighted · 05/08/2022 07:45

I suspect when one of ours says no they both will, they have both said it would feel a bit weird going without each other. Mind you I have some colleagues in their mid 20s who still go regularly with their parents as the parents pay so who knows.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 05/08/2022 07:59

I'm not sure if my two use quizlet. I started an account with my email years ago and had noticed I keep getting emails from them but I've been ignoring them, perhaps I'd better check with the DCs.

mango0 · 05/08/2022 08:00

Morning all.

I'm please to hear you DS is getting better @Monkey2001 .

@Oblomov22 have you climbed many mountains? Would you do some sort of challenge hike? I did this for the first time last year, a long hike but fairly small mountain as they go, it was amazing. Or is there some wildlife you'd love to see,L? I've saw a tiger in India after many hours and stumbled across a sloth fairly easily in Costa Rica. I would love to go on and safari, whale watching and to Borneo for orangutans and Rwanda for gorillas... I still have a very, very long list of places I want to go. Actually regardless of how many holidays we have it only ever seems to get longer. I'd love to hear where your favorite places have been? You've inspired to create a list of things I want to do before my next decade birthday.

We have a camping trip and visit to Edinburgh planned for next week and that is probably going to be our last holiday before she's off to uni. I had hoped we might squeeze a city break into early September but work is making that look unlikely. I feel fairly confident we still have places to explore together and she'll still want to come on some holidays with me for a little while yet 🤞

Benjispruce4 · 05/08/2022 08:01

Not heard of QuizletZ My two don’t tell me how they revise.

craggyrat · 05/08/2022 09:02

Glad to hear your DS is on the mend @Monkey2001

i think DS will be more than happy to come with us on holiday as long as we are paying..he is already thinking of where to go next year!

Seeline · 05/08/2022 09:07

Moving DS into his new 3rd year house in Bristol today - if it will all fit in the car. He is staying the weekend for his job and then coming home again for the week...

mummyinbeds · 05/08/2022 10:38

Today is the day my youngest finally sets off to Ghana. We're just trying to sort out the final bits of packing (photocopies of every bit of useful information possible, visas, letters to hotels to confirm I know where she is - I do wish she'd waited until she was 18!)
However, I am far more worried that DS booked a trip to Paris last night - leaving tomorrow. He can't find his bank card, didn't know he needed travel insurance, hasn't thought about packing. He also hasn't thought about how he's getting to the airport (didn't book the local one). At least he can speak French.
DH and I are having our first child free abroad holiday at the end of the month. I'm excited but have no idea how DS and DD will survive without their usual servant at their beck and call 🤔

Volterra · 05/08/2022 10:38

Really glad he is ok @Monkey2001 .
Good luck to DS with the move @Seeline

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/08/2022 10:47

Good luck to your DCs @mummyinbeds, sounds like typical teenage behaviour. DS has booked a trip to Ireland thinking he can drive there sharing with his girlfriend, neither are insured to do that! They have no other way of getting to the place they're going as its so remote. 🙄

Good luck with the move @seeline

crazycrofter · 05/08/2022 11:28

Hope the move goes smoothly @seeline and dd enjoys her experience in Ghana @mummyinbeds .

@mummyinbeds Dd was planning a trip to Rome and was happily looking for the cheapest flights without any thought of how she’d get to those airports! I reminded her that I work full time and dh works on Sundays (and we only have one car) so she would need to check it would work with us before booking! Working from home has been a bit of a mixed blessing I think - dd just assumes I’m available at all times for lifts. Five minutes to the station is slightly different to a six hour round trip to an airport though!

ealingwestmum · 05/08/2022 13:06

Fabulous memories your DD is about to make mummyinbeds, and good luck on your DS's adventures too, once he gets the basics together! :)

We've returned from an overseas holiday with DD. Got to say, she was a pleasure to be around. Apart from the odd bossiness (yes DD, I have also travelled pre and post you), she enjoyed speaking on our behalf as neither DS nor I have any other language skills other than basic french. The inter-rail trip benefits of not being fazed by any mode of transport across Europe was really reassuring, and yet she could have a mini melt down when being ignored to get a drop more milk in a coffee. Still has a lot to work on understanding the cultural nuances (and the assertiveness needed to deal with this), but this also comes with age and experience.

Proggy, DD used quizlet, especially to load her own vocab, but she used to pay £1 sub. She hasn't heard anything different yet in her T&Cs, but I've told her to look out for a potential change, so thank you.

Also just booked the Men jab at GP, with them acknowledging she'll be freshers from Sept and checking jab records. No mention of cost, I wonder if we're going to get lucky?

ealingwestmum · 05/08/2022 13:07

Husband. No DS :(

KingscoteStaff · 05/08/2022 14:38

@ProggyMat DD couldn’t bear the thought of losing her 256 day streak on Quizlet, so has been doing a Harry Potter quiz each day!

ProggyMat · 05/08/2022 15:12

@KingscoteStaff 😂- DD likes a bit of Harry Potter on Quizlet too!

@ealingwestmum DD mentioned that she can still get 5 rounds free (?) but due to the (ever increasing) size of her vocab sets that’s not enough.

ealingwestmum · 05/08/2022 15:49

Do you think they’ll ever grow out of HP? I can’t see it with mine yet.

Benjispruce4 · 05/08/2022 15:56

Any HP fans applying for Durham? DD1 just graduated . Ceremony was in cathedral where some footage was filmed.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 05/08/2022 16:07

DS has never really been to HP, DD will love them forever. I have never read them but at DD's behest I have been listening to them on Audible this year, just started the Deathly Hallows. DD wants to go to the HP Studios again for a birthday/Christmas present this year.

crazycrofter · 05/08/2022 16:09

Dd is an HP fan too! We went to Alnwick Castle last year, which also features in the films.

She was asked in her Maccies interview what brand she would be. She said she took ages to reply and then said Haribo as they look happy 😂

She’s just packing yet again for the next Christian festival. A couple of friends are stopping over tonight and then taking her with them, thankfully. I’m enjoying this new stage where friends can drive - it will be even better when she can!

KingscoteStaff · 05/08/2022 17:17

Currently lying on our terrace in Croatia listening to Mr Fry’s voice narrating HP5 wafting up from DD’s phone beside the pool!

Isthisjustnormal · 05/08/2022 17:31

Ooh, my two have used quizlet - will check if they've noticed the change: tbf, neither are revising much at the moment ;-)

EwwSprouts · 05/08/2022 17:36

DS has never been into HP. He's only watched the films and I only managed two of the books. Though I do quite like JKR's Strike series.

DS has just done two days gardening for his grandparents. They get on well and he gets a cooked lunch. My dad uses him as an excuse to justify puddings. :)
