Thread 35 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 'What They Did on Their Summer Holidays'

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/07/2022 11:57

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Argh. Next time Piggy

Piggywaspushed · 15/07/2022 16:28

He's OK about it. Think next test will be next summer now.

Decorhate · 15/07/2022 17:06

@Piggywaspushed Sorry it was not good news today.

Nice to hear of all the holidays adventures. I quite fancy trying inter railing myself some day.

Ifany of your dc are still hoping to get a summer job, I’d advise you to check that they have an oven-ready CV. I’d been under an impression that Ds had done one. Saw a job this morning that would be ideal but it’s taken him all day to put one together. I’ve been trying to advise whilst at work. Considering he’s only had one part time job I’m not sure why it was such an issue. The job is probably taken by now Hmm

Benjispruce4 · 15/07/2022 17:08

Hi @singingstones DD needs ABB at York. Thanks for doing that, must’ve taken ages!
@Piggywaspushed im sorry about the test. DD was gutted when she failed first time. The examiner was very blunt and she had to drive back after 7 minutes!
Second time lucky 🤞🏻

crazycrofter · 15/07/2022 17:38

Agreed @Decorhate - dd did one in the autumn before she got the Sainsburys seasonal job and it took her ages! She did have a few things to include - some tutoring and a couple of different volunteering roles - but even so… Once it’s done it does make applying for things easier.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 15/07/2022 17:48

Brilliant list work, as always, singing! It gives me butterflies just reading all those potential exciting new beginnings.

Sorry about the driving test, Piggy. Such a pain that he’ll have to wait until next year to retake. A friend’s DD has failed 4 times now and won’t have chance for another retake before she starts an apprenticeship, so my poor friend will have to drive her to and from every day for a few months at least.

Oblomov22 · 15/07/2022 18:33

Sorry to hear that Piggy. He can book again though.

icanbewhatiwant · 15/07/2022 18:47

@Piggywaspushed can you get a cancellation via an app?

Piggywaspushed · 15/07/2022 18:51

We could ican but not keen to shell even more money out. Will just leave it for a while.

Monkey2001 · 15/07/2022 19:02

Sorry to hear he did not pass Piggy. If it was a near miss, it would definitely be worth looking at re-booking for August. If he leaves it for a year he will forget much more.

crazycrofter · 15/07/2022 19:03

It’s such an expensive business isn’t it, learning to drive? I dread to think what we’ve spent so far on lessons and insurance. I don’t see much hope of dd passing in Sept either 😬

Piggywaspushed · 15/07/2022 20:03

Not sure it was a near miss!

Piggywaspushed · 15/07/2022 20:06

2 majors ; 4 minors...

He rolled back on a hill start because he tried to start in neutral. He had his left indicator on after puling in on the left and then pulled back into the road, still indicating left. Sausage.

MirandaWest · 15/07/2022 20:46

DS failed his first driving test within about 5 minutes - he was a bit despondent after that. For him it was third time lucky.

ww’d been home a couple of hours before he went to pick his girlfriend up - think she will probably be at our house for rut weekend now 😂

Zebracat · 15/07/2022 21:17

@MirandaWest rut weekend? You are one cool mum!😂

Oblomov22 · 16/07/2022 07:34

@Heifer & @crazycrofter you said Nottingham moving in dates Thursday 22nd to Saturday 24th. But Freshers week is Monday 19th to Monday 26th. So surely 22nd is too late? I don't understand.

crazycrofter · 16/07/2022 08:52

Where did you find that out @Oblomov22 ? I don’t think that can be right. Dd wanted to find out when the pre-term freshers Christian Union weekend away was so we contacted them and it’s actually Mon-Wed (19-21) so that week must be before freshers week.

Heifer · 16/07/2022 09:02

@Oblomov22 the uni hasn't said freshers week is 19th Sept - that is only outside companies that seem to advertise for the whole country. Those are events independent of the universities and could include students from both Uni of Nottingham & Nottingham Trent.

The uni doesn't seem to mention freshers week but last year had a welcome week (when term starts) and then lectures start the following week, so I assume it will be the same this year too. I've read to wait for the Student Union to advertise tickets for events that they organise etc.

Heifer · 16/07/2022 09:06

Looks like Uni calls it Induction Week

Here is the link to last years - def called welcome week - nothing set for 2022 yet. They started term 20th Sept last year so that is why Welcome week was from sept 20th

Hope that all makes sense.

This is the link from individual courses (click on find your school to find your DD/DS subject)

Heifer · 16/07/2022 10:39

@Piggywaspushed sorry to hear about driving test - is your DS happy to wait a while or does he wants to crack on? DD has her test middle of Sept but not sure if she will be ready by then tbh. She is only having 1 lesson a week and stopped going out with DH in her car as she finds it really difficult switching between the 2. (old Ka compared to new mini)...

Piggywaspushed · 16/07/2022 10:51

He'll wait I suspect.

Oblomov22 · 16/07/2022 13:24

Oh ok, sorry I hadn't quite grasped that.

cariadambyth · 16/07/2022 14:49

Dd dropped the bombshell yesterday that she still has nightmares about her Ethics paper and that she thinks it’s cost her at least one grade. I’ve said that there’s nothing she can do now and what will be will be. She’s off to Spain tomorrow with friends so at least that should take her mind off it for a week. I’m a little anxious about her going as it’s the first time she’s been away without us, apart from school trips but I’m sure it’ll be fine. It’s lovely to hear of so many of our dc having a good summer.
