Thread 30 Covid Cohort, Mad March Hareing Towards Exams

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 13/03/2022 09:12

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

previous thread 29

I've made this one a little bit earlier as things are so busy, at home and on thread, so please feel free to use up previous thread first Grin

I trained with a magic circle law firm and 30 years later, having done all sorts of other things since, people are still impressed. Go figure. A blue chip name certainly helps smooth the path in later life.

crazycrofter · 24/03/2022 17:05

Ah @Oblomov22 for some reason I thought they paid the fees but maybe that’s a different scheme? Paid placements is great though. And just looking at it online - he’ll complete 12/15 ACA modules so qualifying time will be much quicker - but not as quick as BDO. Tricky!

@Delphigirl what a nightmare! Glad ds can drive!

crazycrofter · 24/03/2022 17:08

Whoops I cross posted - you already said about the 12 exams! For what it’s worth, I trained in a small two partner firm and moved straight to PwC when I qualified. Are both BDO and the degree audit placements? As they’re very boring! Grin I would recommend tax in future!

Oblomov22 · 24/03/2022 17:15

Thank you all. I knew you'd all be pleased for me. Plus so many of you are accountants!

Yes both options high Audit tendency Crazy. Yawn. I spent most of my time auditing (till I failed my papers and was sacked) and let's be honest it isn't scintillating is it? Wink

I can't advise him. Take the job, the apprenticeship. Or take the uni. Which he would enjoy. He's the type to take advantage of all that Uni offers.

But Ultimately if the one thing that you only want is to be ACA qualified then one has to question what the best way of getting there is.

Oblomov22 · 24/03/2022 17:17

And that. I can't decide for him, can't even advise. I've got him this far. My job is done.

Oblomov22 · 24/03/2022 17:19

The effort this has all taken, by me, has been huge. I deserve the uni place ACA for effort alone. Halo

Plus he's still got KPMG, EY and Deloitte ongoing.

Wheresthebeach · 24/03/2022 17:26

Wow this thread moves fast!

Congrats Oblom that’s fab news and Cantonet congrats on the BTEC results. Sorry the merit isn’t what he’d hoped for but still good (that may be our mantra on results day).

Oh my Delphi I can just imagine your reaction to the photo.

Hope you feel better soon 22. It’s rife in DDs teachers at the moment and we are just praying dd doesn’t get it.

singingstones · 24/03/2022 17:36

Oblomov, DS wants self-catering at Nottingham so first choice would be Dagfa and second choice would be Broadgate. My info below:

Dagfa cheapest 39 weeks: 5937.28
Dagfa premium 6375.28
Broadgate cheapest 44 weeks: 5500
Broadgate 3/4 bed 44 weeks: 6223

mummyinbeds · 24/03/2022 17:52

Well done @Oblomov22 and DS. I work with a team of accountants who have all worked for the big 4 and got out when life priorities changed. It's what got them the jobs they have now though. I'm the odd one out in the team with no accountancy background whatsoever. I'm not sure how I got the job 🤣

DS wants Rutland or Sherwood at Nottingham. 31 week catered and 5 minute walk to the law department. If he doesn't get that it will be a tent on the Downs.

Heifer · 24/03/2022 18:04

@Oblomov22 - that is great news - well done your DS - and you of course - you're right, you've helped get him this far - so here is your gold Star just for you. It's a lovely position for him to be in but must also be quite stressful for him to decide - my DD is finding it hard enough to click on the Firm button despite having loved Nottingham from the beginning!

Re accommodation, nothing to add tbh, as @crazycrofter summed it up so well. I am hoping DD will decide on catered at Rutland or Sherwood (31 weeks).

I do get the impression what ever accommodation you end up with, nothing is that far and nothing is terrible.

@Delphigirl - sorry to hear about your DH - great communication from your DS :-) Well done to your DD2.

Just 2 more weeks and it's half term! does everyone else break up 8th April for 2 weeks?

Oblomov22 · 24/03/2022 18:06

Thank you singing and mummy.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 24/03/2022 18:07

@singingstones hope all OK with teacher drama

@Alsoplayspiccolo you know I've blurted on here about Dd and her attitude /counselling , there will be a lull in sight, keep going and feel free to splurge feelings if helpful.

@Cantonet well done to DS!! That is really encouraging he can get a merit at thus stage

@Oblomov22 amazing news...worth the wait ?! Sounds like a brilliant opportunity 👏

@ealingwestmum hope Dd feels better after coming to a decision

Phew it's all going on !

1st April for 3 weeks here…

22Newnames · 24/03/2022 18:17

Oooh @Oblomov22 in that case I’d go for pwc or one of the other big ones if he gets offered them. It does still open doors decades later. What I do now (small practice general practitioner) has very little to do with the audit I did at a big 4, but to put it bluntly it impresses people as it says you are of a certain calibre.

Surprising how many of us are accountants on here!

Fonty · 24/03/2022 18:29

Congratulations @Oblomov22!! That’s absolutely fantastic. Congrats to others on btec results & sorry to hear about broken leg & those with meds challenges.

Also still waiting for Durham & Edinburgh here……. Lovely to hear all the news about how the offer day went. We’re off to Exeter tomorrow for offer day on Saturday. Will see how that goes, but looking forward to some sunny weather.

DS getting fed up of A levels at the moment. He said last night if there was an option to sit business studies right now, he’d do it & take his chances!!

crazycrofter · 24/03/2022 18:43

@Heifer @mummyinbeds our dc may all end up in Sherwood/Rutland together! It’s thanks to one of you, I think, that I found out about the 31 week option.

@22Newnames I’m feeling aggrieved that no one ever seems impressed that I worked at PwC! I must be telling the wrong people Grin

22Newnames · 24/03/2022 18:49

@crazycrofter GrinGrin
To be fair I haven’t told anyone for a while but when I was starting my business potential clients did used to ask!

Cantonet · 24/03/2022 19:06

Brilliant news @Oblomov.

@CrazyCrofter yes ds has last year's results for Business Studies. But strangely enough only got last year's Business Studies exam results a week ago. He'd forgotten all about this paper, as it was so long ago. Both Pe papers were this year in January. The Pe exams are 60% of the overall mark

@alwaysplayspiccolo the retake is in May apparently. Basically the more times he takes exams the better, as his exam technique needs practice. Plus I don't think he did any revision for these exams. As I've said before his first proper ever revision was last half term studying for his Psych
A level mock when he reached the correct ADHD meds 😂

Two of my kids board & ADHD meds & school medical centres are 'bad news'
So now they're in a position to use short acting top ups I have to trust them & not rely on the school centres. My daughters school medical centre gave her the wrong higher dose which made her really anxious all day ( she sent me lots of texts saying she felt really bad) & then the following day they wouldn't give her any as they didn't know whether to give the old dose or the higher dose 🤦🏼‍♀️

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 24/03/2022 19:27

@Fonty

Congratulations *@Oblomov22*!! That’s absolutely fantastic. Congrats to others on btec results & sorry to hear about broken leg & those with meds challenges.

DS getting fed up of A levels at the moment. He said last night if there was an option to sit business studies right now, he’d do it & take his chances!!

I did that in 1997 @fonty and stupidly didn't carry on when I got a C ...I blame the teacher she said 'you might as well take it, I can't see you getting a higher grade' Hmm so I did and increased the amount of time I could lay on the grass on study leave pretending to read the Wife of Bath

Fantastic news Oblomov, hats off to him!
Our accommodation research probably not much use as it's all next to the main campus and on the wrong side for Jubilee

ealingwestmum · 24/03/2022 19:58

Wow, a few hours of news = a week on this thread! Nice dilemma to have Oblomov, good luck on that one!

And to summer school Delphi, that’s a really sensible way to try before you buy, fabulous.

Really hoping next few days brings the remainder of offers out like the sun. I’m off on a week’s creative workshop, far, far away from home. On my own. Cannot wait.

singingstones · 24/03/2022 20:08

Just catching up - very sorry to hear of covid and broken legs, what a nightmare. Sympathies to you Also, there are times when I'm telling the DC something and I already know that they're going to forget / ignore it and then blame me for the consequences. Only 97 days until exam contingency day and it's all over - until results Shock

HarrietDVane · 24/03/2022 20:26

Congratulations Oblomov!

Sorry to hear of Covid cases/broken DHs - hope everyone feels better soon.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 24/03/2022 20:27

Sorry about your poor DH , Delphi, but I did have to chuckle at the text messages/photo from your DC. Annoying for you, when you had no idea what had happened, but preferable to hysterical over-reaction, which is what I’d get from DD.
Hope they all get gone safely and your DH is back on his feet again soon.

Brilliantly well done to your DS, Oblomov. Fantastic to be in such a great position to choose.

Thanks, Fruitygal and Orange. DD hasn’t spoken to us since she came home, despite the SENCO leaving a phone message to say everything’s fine and DD was in good spirits and working well at school today on her new meds.
I’ve backed away completely for now, and won’t involve myself with her NEAs/revision unless she asks.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 24/03/2022 20:28

Thanks, singing.

97 days….yikes! Shock
