OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 13/03/2022 09:12

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I've made this one a little bit earlier as things are so busy, at home and on thread, so please feel free to use up previous thread first Grin

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant I lived right near a mainline train track at uni and got so familiar with the noises that I could tell you which way the train was travelling without looking! You just get used to that sort of noise quickly enough though.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/04/2022 21:04

As we are now pg 40 might be a good time to tell you all I have started a new thread!

bounce like a bunny to the new thread here when ready

I love the “bounce like a bunny” 😊

Talking of which there was a very cute bunny hopping around Nottingham campus yesterday Smile

Seeline · 07/04/2022 21:32

We've seen bunnies at UEA, Nottingham, Kent and Exeter. Another reason DD didn't fancy Birmingham 😆

Decorhate · 07/04/2022 21:59

We saw bunnies at Leeds this week. Right in the middle of quite a built up campus.

Piggywaspushed · 07/04/2022 22:23

DS put Aitken top also, followed by Tennis Courts.

22Newnames · 07/04/2022 23:03

We did previously see bunnies at York campus too! I think DS fell in love with them but sadly the course wasn’t right.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 07/04/2022 23:14

Tennis Courts seems to be DD’s choice too, piggy, although she’s also keen on some of the more expensive en-suite options, like Mason.

Heifer · 08/04/2022 00:01

@Piggywaspushed - what was your DS choices for York?
Has anyone else picked accommodation for York?

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2022 07:31

@Alsoplayspiccolo

Tennis Courts seems to be DD’s choice too, piggy, although she’s also keen on some of the more expensive en-suite options, like Mason.
Yeah. Mason was vetoed on grounds of cost. He wants the food option too (which actually with price rises in supermarkets is beginning to look a good idea!) so that with en suite would be far too much! Aitken has sinks in rooms and as he has brace retainers , I think that gives him a little space to store manky toothbrush, retainers etc. I don't know how many get first choice.

Can't recall all York choices heifer but cheaper David Kato was first and then Alcuin iirc. After that Halifax. He didn't go for catered there. The desire for food option is newly confessed and I think he didn't fancy the colleges which do catered at York. All choices were driven by cost to be honest.

Heifer · 08/04/2022 08:01

Thanks @Piggywaspushed - DD is going for self catered at York because their catered isn't anywhere near as good value as Nottingham - it's only Mon-Fri with no lunch. I've just got to get DD to decide whether she wants to walk from East (newer) or stay on West where her course and sports are...

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2022 08:04

That's why we put Alcuin second. Short walk , music practice rooms and near music dept.

I was surprised there are no practice rooms at The Vale .

crazycrofter · 08/04/2022 10:33

@piggywaspushed @alsoplayspiccolo I was looking at a map of Birmingham accommodation yesterday (not sure why!) and wondering where students at the Vale buy their food from. It's a long trek to the Aldi in Selly Oak. Maybe they use the Morrisons at Five Ways island. But given there's no Aldi or Lidl next door, it's not a bad idea to go for catered.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2022 10:41

I spoke to a girl who told me loads of them get deliveries.

Oblomov22 · 08/04/2022 10:50

I've noticed that in all the uni's I've visited. One tiny Tesco extra if you're lucky. I think it's poor.
Where I live we can get to over 10 different supermarkets, a booker and Costco, within a 10 minute drive.

crazycrofter · 08/04/2022 10:53

There’s loads of supermarkets within a ten minute drive of Birmingham uni, but I was assuming they’d be on the bus or walking. Nottingham is good as there’s a Lidl right opposite Raleigh Park and there’s one by Broadgate too. I actually checked google maps for all the unis dd applied to, to see how close the nearest Aldi or Lidl is!

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2022 11:12

Yes, campus unis sprang up before out of town supermarkets really. The supermarkets are missing a trick.

DS's accommodation at Lincoln was next to a Morrisons.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2022 11:14

I think York uni buses go to a supermarket. No buses in my day!! I can't even remember eating, must be honest!!

GoldenRuby · 08/04/2022 11:19

@Piggywaspushed when I was at York I used to walk to Grandways when living on campus. They haven't been around for decades!

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2022 11:43

I think I went to an ancient Sainsburys next to the river - but it indeed could have been a Grandways - I only remember going once or twice. Genuinely think I ate crap - in second year I probably went to local shops and mainly got fed by restaurant I worked in which was a good trick! Definitely went to Sainsburys at Nottingham. It was along old trek!
