Thread 30 Covid Cohort, Mad March Hareing Towards Exams

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 13/03/2022 09:12

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

previous thread 29

I've made this one a little bit earlier as things are so busy, at home and on thread, so please feel free to use up previous thread first Grin

Thanks @mummyinbeds it seemed weird not to confirm the registration.

@Alsoplayspiccolo I imagine the temptation is strong! Hold on for a few more months if you can, it's a thankless task for sure. Flowers

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/03/2022 16:29

@sofakingcool I remember that chart! Can't remember where from though.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/03/2022 16:29

It must have been on a thread.

sofakingcool · 18/03/2022 18:17

Oh brilliant, thanks Eww! It wasn't that one, but that's even better!

Horace123 · 19/03/2022 06:59

Sorry I’ve been so quiet - am drowning in work at the moment. But have been keeping up with everyone’s news. DS finally got Durham offer last night. He needs 37 points and 6,6,6 for higher levels. So in terms of points it’s lower than Oxford but the same in terms of higher levels. He’s now not sure whether to put Durham or Exeter as insurance - have suggested he speak to school. Fingers crossed everyone else waiting for Durham hears soon.

Oblomov22 · 19/03/2022 07:18

Crazy ds found the Roaccutane effects lasted for many weeks. A month? His skin is now not good atm. Sad

Oblomov22 · 19/03/2022 07:19

That is good Horace. Hopefully a few more will come through.

ealingwestmum · 19/03/2022 08:21

Great news Horace, and good plan to get an opinion from school too.

EventuallyDelighted · 19/03/2022 08:37

Well, we made it to today with DH and DS still testing negative so they have gone to the offer-holder day at RAU. We had been planning to all go but if one of us couldn't its better that it was me as I have been twice before with DS. They have been instructed to look carefully at accommodation options. My LFTs are still strongly positive but I feel pretty ok again now (day 6). DD is negative again now.

crazycrofter · 19/03/2022 09:04

Glad they’ve made it @EventuallyDelighted. Hope it’s a productive day. Has he firmed RAU yet?

@Horace123 good news on the Durham offer. Is either nearer to home?

@Oblomov22 thanks, ds finishes his course 31st March, so I’m just hoping side effects will have worn off by the start of GCSEs . The nighttime nosebleeds are awful aren’t they? Sorry to hear your ds’ skin is bad again

Monkey2001 · 19/03/2022 09:48

@Horace123 congratulations on Durham. Is he anxious about getting the grades for Oxford?

@EventuallyDelighted that sounds like a reasonable outcome after an uncertain week.

EventuallyDelighted · 19/03/2022 11:47

Thanks both, no he hasn't firmed yet, I don't think he quite wants to shut the door on History yet, I don't want to rush him into a decision but I do feel twitchy. DD keeps changing her mind about 6th form places too. Hoping today might swing things, but he has got another offer-holder day next weekend (History at Chichester). I really wish the changes to student finance thing hadn't happened, we were starting to think a gap year would be a good idea but it really isn't a great option now.

EwwSprouts · 19/03/2022 12:08

Fab news @Horace123 !

@EventuallyDelighted Glad he's made it as they can come away with a different perception. Sheffield totally turned it around with DS.

I hope everyone who is trying to get the appropriate support in place for their DC's exams is being heard.

cariadambyth · 19/03/2022 12:45

It’s exciting to hear of people firming offers now, it’s all seeming very real suddenly!
Dd and dh are in Southampton today and I’ve only had one text which read ‘I really like it!’. I’m looking forward to hearing more when they get back tonight.

Monkey2001 · 19/03/2022 13:24

Sunny days may distort open day experience, but it is great if they can start feeling excited about the next place!

crazycrofter · 19/03/2022 13:26

Good news @cariadambyth! I think it was a mistake to go to Southampton on a freezing cold Feb day after storm Eunice, but never mind, Nottingham has its benefits for us as it’s nearer.

cariadambyth · 19/03/2022 13:39

I think torrential rain and howling winds didn’t help Warwick, I imagine the sunshine is helping sell Southampton. Dd was hoping to submit her choices tomorrow having visited everywhere but I think things are a bit less certain now.
Sorry to hear of dcs who are being tricky at the moment. It’s a difficult time for them and , as a consequence, us!

BlueMarigold · 19/03/2022 16:45

We were lucky that it was mostly sunny when we visited Birmingham but most of her day was spent inside.

Wheresthebeach · 19/03/2022 18:45

Our Southampton day was the same crazy and I agree it didn’t help
Fab news horace.

Considered the stress I’ll be happy when this year is done. On Friday DD got told she has a biology mock in 2 weeks and that the last topic they need to teach themselves in time for the mock! She is unhappy

ProggyMat · 19/03/2022 19:09

@Horace123 Yay! Well done to your DS on his Durham offer!
Lots of DDs friends still waiting for the Durham and St A Classics bus to leave the depot…
For DD, her insurance University boiled down to where else she ‘could see herself at’- if that makes sense?

Cantonet · 19/03/2022 19:42

We've done Aberystwyth here. It's not for Ds, for very obvious reasons sadly. We've just been for a Jamaican meal to a place with glowing reviews, that's very ordinary. I'm annoying Ds ... n we have Bangor tmrrw.
