Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.
@Zandathepanda I haven't walked in your shoes and can only imagine the fear. UnMN hug and Brew. No apologies ever for sharing heartfelt worries.

@ProggyMat that must feel so exciting!

Sneaky DS kept it secret from me until we went out for tea with the grandparents, he received an offer from Durham mid-morning. AAA which is standard.
Hey hey well done to him @EwwSprouts! Exciting!

BlueMarigold · 09/02/2022 22:55

Congratulations @EwwSprouts!

My DD got her mock results today. One grade below what she needs for her first choice but she thinks she can pull it up.

KingscoteStaff · 09/02/2022 23:22

First offer for DD - big relief in this house!

Isthisjustnormal · 09/02/2022 23:24

@Zandathepanda: please feel you can keep posting. I hope this is a thoughtful space where we can understand that different kids have different needs and issues. It must be very tough for dd and you as we are expected to welcome the opening up. I really
appreciate the range of voices and experiences on this thread and hope you’ll feel you can still post here.

Well done @EwwSprouts! Great news.

Ds has parents evening tomorrow - as well as his birthday! Just been doing sone birthday set up ready for birthday breakfast tomorrow…

Isthisjustnormal · 09/02/2022 23:24

Yay @KingscoteStaff: where was the offer from - is it somewhere she likes?

Fiddlersgreen · 09/02/2022 23:30

Great news @KingscoteStaff!

Happy Birthday to your DS @Isthisjustnormal any special plans?
My DS is 18 next week and we are still unsure how to celebrate, he doesn’t want a fuss and would be happy to just get a takeaway

KingscoteStaff · 09/02/2022 23:44

Bristol, which is definitely in her top two.

Delphigirl · 10/02/2022 00:42

Well done to her @KingscoteStaff!

Oblomov22 · 10/02/2022 04:59

Zanda I have messaged you. First I tried from my phone. Then ds2's laptop, to use the MN website, incase first message didn't go through.

icanbewhatiwant · 10/02/2022 06:57

@Zandathepanda yes...I can imagine covid is very worrying for you. I work in a shop, several staff members don't bother with masks now. I will be wearing mine as long as I can. I'm not sure I agree with stopping the isolation. But I can understand why it's being done, I hope people are sensible enough to stay home when ill. They are still wearing masks at school all day, Hopefully schools will make their own rules and tell people to stay off.

Seeline · 10/02/2022 07:40

Agggh - DD tested positive this morning Sad First time we've had it in the house!

Will have to cancel Notts offer holder day

Hope she won't be too bad as half term starts on Saturday and she goes straight back to mocks Sad God knows how she will cope with 3 exams in the first 2 days after this.

Nard75 · 10/02/2022 07:58

Hope DD isn't too unwell @Seeline especially with mocks coming up. This is why they shouldn't be stopping isolation it will be too much of a risk for everyone.

NCTDN · 10/02/2022 08:00

@KingscoteStaff I know it's on here somewhere, but what does dd want to study?

crazycrofter · 10/02/2022 08:03

Oh dear @Seeline, I hope she has a mild case. Dd just said her best friend tested positive yesterday.

Well done on the offers @KingscoteStaff dd and @EwwSprouts ds! Dd and I both wish Bath would hurry up and reject her if that’s what they’re going to do

Sorry to hear about dd @Zandathepanda. It must be very worrying for her and for you. I hope you can find her some support /therapy that’s helpful.

Different areas seem to have different approaches @icanbewhatiwant as there’s no masks in schools here and barely any in shops now. I wonder if it’s because this city was hit badly right from the start of the pandemic - so perhaps people are more weary of the whole thing/less anxious now? Lots of people are having covid for the second and third time.

Fferny1 · 10/02/2022 08:16

Well done to @kingscote DD for the medicine offer. It must have been a tricky year to get in, because of a large % of deferrals. Dd1 is in her 4th year at Bristol & she absolutely loves it.

icanbewhatiwant · 10/02/2022 08:27

@crazycrofter they wear masks in lessons here. We had a letter saying they could take them off while seated. But they decided to leave them on. I'd say 90% of the customers in the co op where I work where masks. There were 6 staff Tuesday. 3 of us wearing masks, 3 not.

Well done to those still getting offers. I hope those still waiting hear soon.

Heifer · 10/02/2022 08:33

ah poor DD, hope she isn't feeling ill.

DH and DD went to Nottingham offer day yesterday and both really enjoyed it - I was going to say if there is anything you want to ask but not sure how useful the info would be 3rd hand and they visited re Biology not liberal arts :-)

Is there another day you can do instead?

Congrats on the offers - great news, especially first offers, you've had to wait so long.

We've got a LOT of cases at school here right now, 8 staff off just in juniors plus lots more in seniors. Students have been asked to test daily if any of their class/friendship groups have tested positive. Masks still have to be worn in communal areas, most are wearing in class apparently.

Re DDs/DHs visit to Nottingham, DD came back happy (result as she has been so grumpy recently). She really liked it. She said only about 25 on her visit, which 3 where boys. As suspected they left the house too late, and had to take a detour (didn't turn satnat on early enough) so didn't actually have time to do a proper accommodation tour etc before they had to meet for lunch. They did look at some accommodation from the outside on campus (catered) and DD is happy. Wasn't keen on the "long" walk to the Biology area from some accommodation - which is weird as she has walked 20 mins to school since she was 3 so I am sure she will manage :-)

Glad she liked it still, gives her something to aim for I think. York next during half term just to make sure she is still happy to put it as Insurance.

KingscoteStaff · 10/02/2022 08:46

Thanks chaps @Fferny1 @crazycrofter @NCTDN @Delphigirl - I am so proud of her it hurts!

There are so many hurdles for medics - near perfect GCSEs, work ex., UCAT/BMAT pre-tests, PS, will she get an interview?, interview prep (in 4 different formats), will she get an offer?...

I think she is relieved now that all (!) she has to focus on is getting her grades!

EwwSprouts · 10/02/2022 08:48

@Isthisjustnormal Happy birthday to mini normal! Shame about the clash with parents' evening even if it is all nice words.

@KingscoteStaff Hurrah!

Thanks for all the congratulations. @Fruitygal I know you're waiting for the same and I have my fingers crossed the MN vibe brings an offer soon. DS is delighted and likes Durham. Top choice is St A and on paper an offer would be AAB which is lower so some thinking still to be done if St A come through.

Nard75 · 10/02/2022 09:10

Well done to everyone receiving offers!!

Wheresthebeach · 10/02/2022 09:18

@EwwSprouts @KingscoteStaff Fab news about the offers. Congrats.

DD back at school today, but only has one lesson so will be home at lunch. She's started to feel better but still looks grey, poor thing.

DD's teachers have said the guidance doesn't take any content out at all. It does give them an idea of what's the most important though so work will focus on making sure the most important parts are really solid.

Fruitygal · 10/02/2022 09:31

@EwwSprouts thanks for the kind words and fingers crossed on positive vibes from this thread. DD has 3 friends waiting on St Andrews like your DS for science based courses all have Durham to wait for too but one doing languages was offered in St. Andrews in November?!? She’s got Cambridge now so DD says her st Andrews one is her insurance.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/02/2022 09:41

@Heifer that day of looking at exam stuff in school sounds really helpful, I hope our school does the same.

@Zandathepanda please stay on the thread, we are a mixed bunch of people who sometimes forget that everyone has their own specific concerns but ultimately we are all wishing well for each other and want to be supportive. Please stay and share you concerns, we may not be able to do anything practical but can give virtual hugs.

Well done to your DD on the offer @KingscoteStaff and to your DS @EwwSprouts.

@sazzy5 I'm sorry that things aren't looking great, medicine is such a harsh course for applicants. Fingers crossed that something positive happens for you and the other med applicants who are without news yet.

@Seeline sorry to hear your DD has Covid, my DS is still rundown with a sore throat but negative on LFT and PCR. He's quite fed up with it.

Happy 18th to your DS @Isthisjustnormal!

No news in this house other than I was pleased that DS went to see his Biology teacher yesterday about some genetic stuff he didn't quite get and they went through it again. He came home and worked through some exam questions and was so pleased with himself when he got them right he came down to show me. Nice to see him being a bit proactive instead of hiding his head in the sand.

Heifer · 10/02/2022 09:57

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I thought it sounded helpful but DD scoffed when I told her. She said she's had it every year since Y9 and basically they tell them to write up notes on card, take a bath and drink green tea :-) Well done do your DS for asking for help (not DD's strong point)

I've just emailed Head of 6th form as DD tells me she can't book her firm/insurance without Head sitting with her! That's not helpful as we need to do it during half term, after she has visited York (insurance) and before March 1st when Nottingham accommodation opens. I'm hoping DD has got the wrong end of the stick and we can do it when we want to. But thought I had better check in case school haven't handed over permissions etc. I know they said not to let accommodation rush you etc but DD hasn't thoroughly thought things through but we just want to check she would be happy with York as insurance. School have been very helpful with the whole process to be fair.

Had to smile at @Fruitygal comment re friends insurance being St Andrews.

Heifer · 10/02/2022 09:59

@Fruitygal I hope Durhams offer hurrys up for your DD, which is her current insurance?
