Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thanks for the congratulations to DS.

You've apologised here and tried to directly @Oblomov22. In this group that has a friendly and supportive history that to me would be more than enough to move on for a comment that was made with no aim at anyone else.

I like Wordle and Nerdle but have not tried the others. I didn't know whether to be delighted to get the American word in 3 goes or concerned people would assume I must be illiterate!

ChristopherTracy · 10/02/2022 20:18

@Fruitygal great info - thanks!

Oblomov22 · 10/02/2022 20:37

Zanda just pm’ed and we’ve chatted and she thanked me for saying sorry.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/02/2022 21:39

Thank you for that info @Fruitygal

EwwSprouts · 10/02/2022 21:52

@Fruitygal gosh it's a minefield for the uninitiated. For the biology applicants a heads up that Sheffield said if you have firmed with them and miss by a grade they will take you.

Shimy · 10/02/2022 22:27

Oblomov hope you're okay? I didn't see anything offensive personally but know how easy it is for a quick post to come off the wrong way online.

Zanda How are you holding up? praying for lots of strength and peace for you and family.

Shimy · 10/02/2022 22:29

Anyone heard from Bath?

Fruitygal · 10/02/2022 22:44

Fab @Oblomov22 @Zandathepanda …. This is the best thread 🧵 on MN for kindness - so glad you two could sort things out - typing rather than talking can result in things come across in more severe ways.it’s a hazard we’ve all had an issue with at one time or another.

DD had clothing inspection today - teacher with clipboard getting awkward about length of skirts, baggy jumpers, nose piercings and crop tops and a lack of smart jackets, blouses or shirts being worn. DD got away with short skirt by pulling it down by a couple of inches from the hem. Got told off for the baggy old (comfortable) jumper - why hadn’t she removed it and put her jacket on? Oh because then the teacher would have seen the crop top underneath and the skirt now resting on her hip bones Shock . I think I would rather they would have spend time teaching them about the exams like @Hiefer has.

DD and I Wordle first thing as we are getting ready in the morning and then text once we’ve solved it.

Watching This is going to Hurt tonight with DD snd DH …. We’ve all read the books …and I’ve worked in a large NHS hospital in my past so laughing at the familiarity of it as well as the gags - enjoyed it but DH was confused and asked why they’d swapped Adam’s partner from a girl to a boy…. DD and I could not believe he hadn’t noticed having read two books by the man 🤣😂 that he was gay x

NCTDN · 10/02/2022 22:53

Another one in agreement with yesterdays wordle!!
I'm off to Google byrdle and globle. I'm not a needle fan though.

Isthisjustnormal · 11/02/2022 07:22

@Shimy: nothing from Bath yet here.

I’ve avoided the wordle thing so far: am I missing out?!

Seeline · 11/02/2022 08:43

DDs PCR positive ☹️ She wasn't happy when she realised that unless she tests negative, full isolation ends on the Sunday at the end of half term, the day before mocks.

Whoever suggested Byrdle, thank you - right up my street. I've sung choral music for most of my life. Will have to look up globle now - guessing a geographical theme?

BlueMarigold · 11/02/2022 08:59

I know nothing about choral music so Byrdle not for me…. I have played Wordle, Absurdle, Nerdle and Dordle. Played Globle for the first time yesterday. Hopefully it will improve my geography!

Same on both points.

ExtremelyDelighted · 11/02/2022 09:24

I do Wordle every day and post in a messenger chat with some friends. Tried Sweardle but it was a bit too easy Grin and Hogwartle (too hard, I'm only reading the HP books for the first time now). Tried Globle yesterday, got it in 7.

Heifer · 11/02/2022 09:28

@Fruitygal clothes inspection sounds extreme, especially for 6th formers! But yes the number of times DD would have been caught out if she had to take her jumper off as her skirt would either have been rolled up 50 times or hanging on her hip to make it longer for inspection. LOL at her jumper being too baggy - it's the fashion :-) DD seems to have stopped wearing smart jackets at the moment so Im guessing they don't have too (unless it's a formal occassion).

@BlueMarigold - I know nothing about any music but still enjoy Brydle - just find it harder that's all. Damn you for mentioning the others I will HAVE to look now ;-)

@Seeline sorry to read about pcr :-(

Re Wordle - yes everyone should play it - it's great - and I scoffed originally thinking for goodness sake it's just a word game but it's very addictive so good thing it's only 1 per day.

singingstones · 11/02/2022 09:28

Dordle was a new one for me, I like that. Trying Hogwartle next but I don't think I'll be very good at that one.

Fruitygal · 11/02/2022 09:32

@22Newnames Wordle is good and only once per day

Fruitygal · 11/02/2022 09:35

@Heifer We think clothes inspection is nuts especially for these kids at this stage. DS1 laughed and said once you are at uni you will spend 60% of your time in PJs or sports kit… and not wear anything smart until placement or graduation

ExtremelyDelighted · 11/02/2022 09:48

Wow, I just got today's Globle in 1 go!

I'm liking that globle.

Monkey2001 · 11/02/2022 09:54

Hogwartle 😁

Uniform policy fed into DS's choice of sixth form - his old school were suits for boys, formal for girls and the one he chose is more college style, nothing too revealing, but pretty relaxed. Because he had a choice, if he had stayed at his school, I think it would have been reasonable for then to enforce the rules. If the students don't like the rules they could look into how to get the school policy changed. Maybe do a survey of students, parents and staff to see if they could make a strong case for change.

Seeline · 11/02/2022 10:04

Just got my first globle in 7 - pretty chuffed 😁

DDs school has a similar policy @Fruitygal although no formal inspection - they can be accosted at any time by any teacher! DD only recently escaped a detention because she had a polo neck top under her jumper rather than a proper shirt collar, a necessity because of all the bloody windows being open in February. They are supposed to keep jackets on at all times unless in the 6th form centre or given formal permission by the class teacher to remove them.

crazycrofter · 11/02/2022 10:22

Clothes inspections are ridiculous at this age! Dd chose a sixth form with uniform - it was the main downside, but there were other benefits! She ditched the blazer fairly early on in year 12 and it doesn't seem to have mattered so that was a waste of money! Her skirt, which is age 11 or something, is also rolled up. Ds in year 11 also seems to have got away with not wearing the blazer I bought in the summer of year 10 at all.

He absolutely hates uniform or any smart clothes with a passion (ADHD, but some autistic traits) and has been fighting uniform since year 7. It's so annoying! When it was very cold in January they were allowed to wear their coats, so he decided he'd just wear a t-shirt underneath and keep his coat done up! It worked for a few weeks, until I got a call from the head of year.

Unfortunately where we're moving to in the summer, the school sixth form has formal dress. He'd love to go to a college and wear his own clothes, but he's not keen on the courses at the local college. I have no idea how strictly the sixth form enforces its dress code. Ds has already told me there's no way he's wearing a tie, he'll just wear a jumper to hide it. I really can't be doing with the battles, so I hope they turn a blind eye!

ExtremelyDelighted · 11/02/2022 10:23

My DCs schools both have "business casual" dresscodes for 6th form which is OK, DS has to wear a suit about twice a term for open days, Remembrance Sunday etc. DD is factoring it into her choice of whether to stay or not so I did mention it to the headmaster recently, they need to know if these things are influencing decisions about staying IMO.

DD was told to wear base layers for her mocks recently due to the open windows, sensible especially for her as she has extra time. I have just been reading her Form 8 (assessment for extra time for dyslexia in GCSEs), I'd never seen it before. Every single teacher has confirmed that she takes much longer than others to complete the same work, has obvious processing issues, it's sad but has made me very proud of her as she works so hard. Angry too at the primary school teachers who repeatedly told me she just wasn't trying.

Fferny1 · 11/02/2022 10:40

Finally got through to Aberystwyth Uni after about 12 calls asking the same question of which one call was answered & then referred on - no response. Then an email from earlier on in the week which wasn't answered. Then I got thru' just now - admissions lady was talking to me while crashing around in the kitchen it sounded like. Not impressed by this at all.
