This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Both mine always wear watches - have done since they had their first ones aged about 6.

DS doesn't wear any other jewellery. DD has hundreds of earnings, necklaces and cheap silver rings, but nothing really expensive.

DS will be 21 at the end of this year (4 months after DDs 18th!!), so may be will want something special for that.
@singingstones Wrap up your sofas in cotton wool! Our kitten, lovely though she was, completely wrecked our sofa.
Yes I'm not looking forward to that. Scratching post / climbing tower thing is coming tomorrow but in my experience they much prefer upholstery!

ExtremelyDetermined · 23/01/2022 12:58

Mine have both had a couple of watches over the years but never really worn them. DH never wore one till the advent of smartwatches. Whereas I have worm one every day since I was little and feel a bit lost without one. I suppose we have clocks in every room in the house, clocks everywhere at school and the DCs use their phones out and about. DS is one of those people who instinctively knows what time it is to a pretty good accuracy.

Oblomov22 · 23/01/2022 13:23

Ds1 18th next week feels a bit low key to me, I'd prefer him to have a party. Instead we've got a meal out in London, taking his girlfriend. He's had the latest iPhone for Christmas and birthday. He gets his child trust fund, and also a savings account we've been saving since birth.

Dh has booked us all for a weeks holiday, really cheap bargain, all inclusive in Majorca, the first week of Easter. We were very unsure about it, talked about it endlessly, discussed it with Ds1, unsure if it was a bad idea, assured him we wouldn't mind if he cancelled the day before if studying isn't going well. He says he's already on top of his studying and it won't be a problem, but he'll stay home if need be.

Blimey just found the thread and we’re six pages in!

Congrats to @Delphigirl and @Hattifatteners DCs, lovely news.

DS is 18 in about seven weeks and wants a party but it will have to be garden based as I’m not having hoards of drunk teens in the house! Will probably get a marquee just in case it rains. Present wise, we got his car last year so he’s not getting another big one. We have bought him a ticket to the Rolling Loud festival this summer and might give him a bit of cash, he hasn’t asked for anything in particular and has a laptop as h needed it for sixth form (I’m hoping it survives into uni!).

crazycrofter · 23/01/2022 15:14

Such a cute kitten @singingstones!

Dd had a Mac for her GCSE reward - expensive (£1k) but we got it on interest free credit and we’re paying it off £50 so it’s not too noticeable. They last ages and she loves the fact that it syncs with her phone.

EwwSprouts · 23/01/2022 15:43

Love the kitten.

DS isn't 18 until August & probably this year everyone will be abroad. He got a HP touch screen laptop for Christmas (much more than we spend usually). I chose it as this HP laptop is 7 years old and got me through a few years of self-employed so has worked hard. I've only had to replace the battery (do not jinx it!).

ealingwestmum · 23/01/2022 16:50

Lots of naughtiness in that bundle of fluff! We can’t have cats anymore as I don’t want to go through the trauma of them being run over. Miss them though.

ChristopherTracy · 23/01/2022 16:56

Page 6! argh. DS driving test tomorrow. Of more importance is that he isnt doing any project work thats worth 20% of one of his alevels. So enraging.

'Just tell him he needs to stop gaming' says my exdh. Oh thanks, cos I hadnt tried that before. Hmm

crazycrofter · 23/01/2022 17:00

Hope the driving test goes well @ChristopherTracy and that he gets on with his coursework some time soon!! Dd has history coursework due very soon too. I think she’s been doing some but who knows.

ealingwestmum · 23/01/2022 17:07

Good luck to him tomorrow CT!

Oblomov22 · 23/01/2022 17:16

@ChristopherTracy good luck to your DS tomorrow for his driving test.
@Monkey2001 you’re correct, DDs driving test is also tomorrow!

The kitten looks gorgeous @singingstones

icanbewhatiwant · 23/01/2022 21:52

Yes....Good luck with driving tests tomorrow. 🤞

ealingwestmum · 23/01/2022 21:54

Ah Paddington, have fingers crossed for your DD too!

22Newnames · 23/01/2022 22:29

Gorgeous kitten @singingstones!

I forgot I also did a 0-18 photo album for DS1’s 18th. It took hours and hours to do. I now realise I only have a couple of weeks to do the same for DS, eek. Best get started soon.

ExtremelyDetermined · 23/01/2022 23:23

I have spent hours and hours sorting photos for DS's photobook too and have only started on the book itself today. I have 45k photos in storage and for most years I had already sorted a few hundred best ones but from about 2007-2014 I'd never sorted them. I was also really bad at remembering to delete the crap ones regularly before downloading them off my phone backing, I am much more disciplined about that now.

Good luck for driving tests!

BlueMarigold · 24/01/2022 06:35

Good luck for those taking the driving tests today Smile

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 24/01/2022 07:52

Good luck to those with driving tests.

Fingers crossed for more offers this week especially tomorrow.

AnneOfCleavage · 24/01/2022 08:59

Awww darling little kitty.

Good luck on the driving tests today 🤞🤞

Re photo book. I did a poster for DH's 30th that was pictures from birth to date and it always gets a mention as it's in our hallway still. Was a lot of work but so worth it. DD wants one too but not for a while - prob 21st as she wants Uni life included in hers.
I'm in the process of acquiring 18 presents - obv not all big / expensive ones - that will go in a basket type receptacle. DH did one for my 30th and I loved it. Would like to think 18 would be achievable if he could do 30.
We also make homemade cards for each other - have a huge box in the loft - so DD will get some kind of this is your life type card keepsake too. Will do her a recipe book for uni too and get family members to each give one as she loves to cook and bake.

Wheresthebeach · 24/01/2022 09:18

Good luck with the driving tests CT and PP.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/01/2022 09:41
