OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 21/01/2022 14:21

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@estherfrewen

DS got an offer for history at Downing. Bit flabbergasted to be honest
Congratulations!
ealingwestmum · 25/01/2022 11:50

Esther!!! Your news has made my poo morning a little brighter. Fabulous news.

estherfrewen · 25/01/2022 11:56

Thank you! Am hoping it might make him work a bit harder!

DoggerelBank · 25/01/2022 11:57

@estherfrewen Wonderful news!
@Piggywaspushed @ealingwestmum So sorry it's a no, but amazing of them to be brave enough to go through the grueling process. They will have learned a lot from it, and will thrive at the uni they end up, I'm sure.
Thumbs up for Direct Line here re car insurance. They're wonderfully flexible when we switch uni kids on and off various car policies for a few weeks depending on their whereabouts and holiday plans, and their black box system (via mobile phone rather than actual box) doesn't seem to be too draconian. Although of course the real test of an insurance policy is how they behave when you have an accident, and luckily we haven't put that to the test yet!

ZittiEBuoni · 25/01/2022 12:00

Congratulations, estherfrewen, so exciting!

The thread isn't new any more but thanks for it anyway, Orange.

Not much news to report here - dd still hasn't set foot in school but is following along with lessons on her laptop. Film Studies film-making coursework was a knotty problem, but solved by her being able to substitute a screenplay. She's been writing these since she was 6, so not a huge obstacle for her!

More mocks after half term, she's made a revision planner.

22Newnames · 25/01/2022 12:01

Excellent news @estherfrewen. I have stayed at Downing several times for work events and it is beautiful!

crazycrofter · 25/01/2022 12:08

Well done to your ds @estherfrewen!

Seeline · 25/01/2022 12:10

Congratulations @estherfrewen!

Isthisjustnormal · 25/01/2022 12:27

Congratulations @estherfrewen! Downing is beautiful! Are celebrations planned this evening ?

Great news too @ZittiEBuoni that dd is managing to continue to engage (her screenplay writing sounds so cool!) and motivated to set up revision timetables/ how do you feel she is doing?

Ds is a no from Cambridge but very much expected and he seems unbothered or even somewhat relieved. I think the challenges ahead of him if he was offered a place were actually more off putting that the excitement of being offered one: which I suspect is a very good sign it wouldn’t have been the right place for him! He’d moved on before the confirmation came through tbh but I think he’s learnt loads about his interest and himself and grown in confidence through the application process so definitely a very worthwhile process for him :-)

Wheresthebeach · 25/01/2022 12:32

Congrats @estherfrewen. Lovely news.

Glad your DS isn't disappointed Isthis - from your description he's already decided it wasn't right for him. Sounds like he has a sensible head on his shoulders.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 25/01/2022 12:33

Well done to your DS @esterfrewen, great news.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 25/01/2022 12:37

@Isthisjustnormal sorry to hear you DS got a no from Cambridge too, glad he is able to put a positive attitude to it.

Oblomov22 · 25/01/2022 12:43

Congratulations Esther. Sorry to hear that Piggy and Ealing.

ealingwestmum · 25/01/2022 12:45

Isthisjustnormal, sounds like the process provided as much value as the right outcome (especially when retrospect can kick in meaningfully), good for him for being so mature.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 25/01/2022 13:08

Just popping on quickly to say Congratulations and Commiserations both for driving tests and Cambridge ...they'll get to where they need to be somehow!

Oh and butterycarb based slight name change for me

Monkey2001 · 25/01/2022 13:10

@Isthisjustnormal Comp Sci is SOOOO competitive at Cambridge, glad he is not disappointed.

DS's GF was rejected today too and she said she didn't mind as much as she thought she would as she had decided that Nat Sci wasn't for her anyway.

singingstones · 25/01/2022 13:17

Huge congrats to esther and commiserations to Piggy, isthisjust and ealing. Even though they will undoubtedly find the place that's just right for them, it must be gutting after such a long and tough process. As esteemed philosopher Ariana Grande would say, "Thank U, Next" Thanks

Fonty · 25/01/2022 13:23

Sorry @Isthisjustnormal . Onwards & upwards with hopefully better things to come

Nard75 · 25/01/2022 14:03

Just wanted to say congratulations to Cambridge offers and driving test passes. For those who didn't get offers hope they aren't too disheartened as just putting in an application is an achievement so well done.

icanbewhatiwant · 25/01/2022 14:08

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn it sounds like you have restrictions with the black box. Ds2 is currently with marmalade for second year. Ds1 used marmalade for 2 years, then insure the box. We've never had any restrictions apart from driving safely within the speed limit. It connects to our phones. They did say when our phones are connected rather than ds's our driving won't be monitored.

icanbewhatiwant · 25/01/2022 14:16

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn our black box is a little round thing stuck to the windscreen. We used to take it in turns to drive ds's car and see if we could score 100% which Ds was doing every journey. However, now he's passed his test I can no longer see the app. so I don't know. I'll try to look at it on his phone.

@estherfrewen congrats on the offer. Commiserations to the others.

Good inspirational quote there ! Grin

In some ways this makes firm/insurance harder as all the other grades are clustered. No offer from Bath yet, either.

Volterra · 25/01/2022 14:45

Congratulations to Estherfrewen. Commiserations for the rejections. They did so well going and sadly it was always going to be a difficult year.

Hopefully he’ll hear from Bath soon Piggy. Is their offer likely to be different from his others?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 25/01/2022 14:46

Thanks for that info @icanbewhatiwant very interesting how different they are. I wonder of the fact it's in the windscreen as opposed to stuck to the battery under the bonnet has any bearing on accuracy? Who knows but I will be sure to look at a different insurer next year.

icanbewhatiwant · 25/01/2022 15:00

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn the first year for ds1 it was fixed to the battery. That was fairly accurate. But it's been in the windscreen for ds2.
