Monkey2001 · 20/09/2021 23:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

From OrangeCinnamonCocktail:

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

That's really vexing.

Piggywaspushed · 29/09/2021 16:05

orange , hope your DM is OK .

Delphigirl · 29/09/2021 16:22

Oh I’m sorry about your DM @OrangeCinnamonCocktail. That’s worrying. I hope she makes a speedy recovery.

@Oblomov21 that is a bit rubbish. Is it worth a phone call to say it is her 1st choice? They should be limiting parental access, not that of potential students.

Oblomov21 · 29/09/2021 17:12

4 times I've phoned. Can't get through to anyone who knows anything.

ealingwestmum · 29/09/2021 17:14

Hoping it’s not what you are anticipating Orange Flowers

stoneysongs · 29/09/2021 17:46

Sorry to hear that about your mum Orange. Hope she feels better soon.

Oblomov that is infuriating when you booked so long ago - they can't just kick you off!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 29/09/2021 18:00

Thinking of you and your mum, Orange. Flowers

Thanks to you and Delph for the Southampton info. I think if nothing else, it will be good for DD to see a uni properly and get a feel for the place; she’s hoping to study English with film, so no need to see lecture rooms etc, but a chat with student support would be useful, as well as info about a year abroad.

cariadambyth · 29/09/2021 18:34

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail thinking of you, your mum and your family 💐

crazycrofter · 29/09/2021 18:55

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail I'm really sorry to hear about your mum, I hope things are better than you're expecting.

Shimy · 29/09/2021 18:57

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail Prayers for DM Flowers

EerilyDisembodied · 29/09/2021 19:10

Sorry to hear about your mum @OrangeCinnamonCocktail Flowers

@icanbewhatiwant we are going to Sussex for history too, on the 16th. I haven't looked at the details yet, my head is in a bit of a spin with it all, maybe later. DS is using an email address which I also have access to which is a godsend at the moment. We haven't had any details through yet though.

EerilyDisembodied · 29/09/2021 19:14

There's a thread about RHU being quiet at weekends, we were talking about that last week

EwwSprouts · 29/09/2021 19:51

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail I hope your mum sees some improvement and you have more time together Flowers

Isthisjustnormal · 29/09/2021 19:53

Oh @OrangeCinnamonCocktail, sorry to hear about your mum. We’ll all be thinking of you over the weekend - I’m sure I speak for everyone in saying feel free to use this thread. In any way that would support you - whether that’s talking or not talking about it.

@Oblomov21: how frustrating. I’ve found lots of talks are booked when trying to get open days organised. It to overbook and then cancel people in pretty unforgivable - surely you organise an additional talk in that situation??

We are nearish RH so ds went for a look round when no other unis were doing open days. He liked it (he likes quiet!!) but it did sound sedate!

icanbewhatiwant · 29/09/2021 20:00

@EerilyDisembodied I thought Sussex was 2nd or 23rd?

icanbewhatiwant · 29/09/2021 20:03

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail I hope your DM is ok 💐

Shimy · 29/09/2021 21:01

We haven’t been to any open days but I’d be so annoyed in Oblomov’s shoes. Why on earth did they overbook and why did they take so long to you know? That’s is so unprofessional of them

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 29/09/2021 21:19

Bless you all and thanks. Mum has dementia and is in a nursing home. She was admitted with a gastric infection which turned into pneumonia. Further tests have revealed she had a 'silent' heart attack in the last two/three days. She was getting more responsive when I left but v worried.. She is not lucid at the best of times by talks a lot so to sit there with here all monitored up and barely responding was hard. We are all taking it in turns to be with her and see how she progresses. Unfortunately even if the pneumonia is successfully treated we still have to deal with the heart attack business, the doctor this morning said it might be days or weeks. Poor thing.

Seeline · 29/09/2021 21:35

Thinking of you and your family @OrangeCinnamonCocktail 💐

mummabear74 · 29/09/2021 21:40

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail thinking about you and hope your mum is comfortable. How worrying for you all x

Delphigirl · 29/09/2021 21:50

Oh orange, I’m so sorry.

estherfrewen · 29/09/2021 22:25

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail - so sorry to hear about your mum. Thinking of you

Monkey2001 · 29/09/2021 22:31

Orange sorry to hear your sad news. Hope you are managing some good quality moments in the midst of the stress.

I have more than my fair share of funerals and memorials at the moment. Put together it sounds like "A series of Unfortunate Events"

Really sad memorial service today - a friend who died from complication in a brain operation in August which she needed for the metastatised breast cancer she has been fighting for 3 years. She was a single mum and leaves a 17 year old daughter, all the relatives live in Romania and it is unbearably sad. To be left to make your own way at 17, when our DCs need so much support is tragic. I was asked to speak at the funeral and it was hard!

2 weeks till my uncle's funeral. My aunt died of lung cancer in March, 6 weeks after it was diagnosed. She had appeared to be in good health at Christmas. My uncle was devoted to her, and when he got Covid a month ago basically decided not to fight it. He was 82 but had a good quality of life, singing in a choir, going on holidays. My cousins had 2 apparently healthy parents last Christmas and have now lost them both.

Final one, DH's boss's wife committed suicide in September, caused by some drugs for her ME changing her personality. She hung herself and her husband found her. Utterly devastated. That's another memorial just after my uncle's.

That is my cheery Autumn, puts all the UCAS stuff into perspective for us.

Gosh @ monkey that sounds like very difficult times for your friends & family - such tragic stories.

@Cinnamon I'm so sorry to hear about your mother becoming so ill. I hope you can spend as much time as possible together with her in the near future.

I haven't been posting as well because we've had a shockingly unexpected event here. My youngest became suicidal while I was on holiday with my daughters and he was left with DH. He planned to kill himself a couple of weeks ago. It was aborted by one of his friends calling the police who knocked on the door & told DH. Who then found he'd set up a plan in his bathroom. It's been a very difficult time to say the least. So UCAS application has been the last thing on my mind.
Hopefully things are picking up a bit & my youngest is starting to respond to his medication. But one day he's fine & the next he isn't. He's not attending school & has been signed off for a few weeks. So I have no school run as the others are all boarding now.

Volterra · 30/09/2021 05:09

Oh Ffemy I am so sorry, what a terrible shock for you all 💐Thank goodness his friend took him seriously and spoke up. That’s good he is responding to his medication. Please take really good care of yourself, you must be in shock right now and go onto autopilot.

Orange I am really sorry, I have been where you are 💐

Monkey that is awful, what a difficult time for you all💐 it definitely does put everything into perspective indeed.
