Let's try this

DS3 is off to the Birmingham open day today with his F. I probably won’t get much feedback from him which is a shame as I think it should be a strong contender for his aspirational choice. Not too far from home, nice campus, reasonably priced accommodation and a good bursary as well as a well respected maths course.

TerfOnTheWagon · 29/06/2019 12:13

@Numbersaremything Oh yes, he loves formal wear. That Brighton tailor bloke in the papers this week quite reminded me of DS Grin (he goes to Jaegar, Burberry etc in Regent St/Jermyn St and tries on clothes and takes selfies in the fitting room!)

Numbersaremything · 29/06/2019 12:22

One of my chums got a Savoy tailor to make him a tweed cycling suit with plus fours before the whole hipster thing!

Anyone going to Durham next Saturday? Or Oxford on Thursday?

Numbersaremything · 29/06/2019 13:36

DD will be in Durham on Monday & Oxford on Wednesday. We're al like ships which pass in the night!

Durham on Monday. Oxford for two days next week.

oneteen · 29/06/2019 19:07

DD at York tomorrow with her DF, then that's it for us until September. (Although we are popping into St And's and Edinburgh in the summer). She's completing most of her UCAS form this coming Friday - school set aside all day Friday for the girls to complete as much detail as possible - obviously, they can change their Uni choices anytime before submission.

Just two weeks left of L6th!

HunkyDory DS likes Bath - but he was only looking at Physics - not Natural Sciences. He’s looking at Natural Sciences at Cambridge because they don’t offer straight Physics.

DS liked the Bath campus more than Surrey (the only other uni apart from Cambridge he’s visited) He looked at the accommodation but if he goes there he’d want the quiet accommodation and they didn’t show that on the general tour.

DS can’t go to the Oxford open day next week as he’s on a Physics Summer school in Cambridge. He can’t do the September open day because he has to put it his application into to his school before them - and have decided between Oxford and Cambridge. He emailed the Oxford Physics department. As I suspected they won’t arrange for him to see it. I don’t know if it’s because of his ASD but it seems really unlikely he’s going to choose to apply to a uni where he hasn’t seen where he’ll be studying.

MillicentMartha · 29/06/2019 22:45

DS3 was really taken with Birmingham. Hopefully it’ll be OK to put as his first choice, depending in his predicted grades.

My Niece just finished her Masters at Birmingham (Geography) and speaks very highly of the Uni- she had an Unconditional offer (4 yrs ago). Support was brilliant, they assisted her in finding an Internship who then sponsored her Masters and she starts a full-time job with the same company in September. I think offers come out quite quickly too, which is a morale booster.

MillicentMartha · 29/06/2019 23:26

Funnily enough, oneteen Birmingham was last to make an offer to DS1 3 years ago. Maybe it’s subject dependant? His was maths.

TikkaMoSalah · 29/06/2019 23:31

HunkyDory69
My DS might be applying for Natural Sciences, he’s not sure yet - he can’t decide between Nat Sci, Maths or Chemical Engineering!
So far we’ve visited Exeter, Bristol, Bath and Warwick, and Bath is the front runner.
On Thursday we’re doing Cambridge.
Where does your DS prefer so far?

oneteen · 29/06/2019 23:31

Hmmm interesting - did your DS1 apply to Oxbridge too? I'm almost sure it was DN's first offer (she did not apply to Oxbridge but was predicted A* x 3). She's loved her Bham Uni experience, she did party quite hard in Yr1, but still managed a First.

We were at Birmingham yesterday, too. DS really likes it and is definitely going to apply - at least he will if he can get the right grade predictions as that's mainly what they look at.
The philosophy degree has lots of amazing options. The student who took part in the course talk also mentioned there were a lot of internships that are sent round to students in arts and humanities and stressed that these have all been vetted by the uni.

MillicentMartha · 30/06/2019 10:30

oneteen no, he didn’t apply to Oxbridge and was predicted 2 A* and one A. The standard offer for maths was AAA. He heard back from Warwick immediately and Exeter, Nottingham and Southampton within a week or so. Birmingham took over a month. This was in 2016 though. So it may be subject or faculty dependant or they may have sped up the process?

He ended up with 3xA* and just got a first from Warwick! Grin

oneteen · 30/06/2019 15:14

@MillicentMartha - Well done to your DS - I think Warwick will be DD's first choice - although its a moving feast.

MillicentMartha · 30/06/2019 16:05

Warwick isn’t on DS3’s list. A bit too aspirational! Grin But Birmingham is currently favourite, so Im glad your DN liked it.

howwudufeel · 30/06/2019 17:25

Birmingham is very impressive.

oneteen · 30/06/2019 23:40

DD liked York and thought how well organized the open day was (we found a lack of organization when we visited Bath Uni). Its a small intake for Biochemistry (55 DC), so it will be one of DD's five because she liked the course and the accommodation but not as much as Warwick.

Glad the visits are over with for now :-)

eatthatfrog · 01/07/2019 13:53

hi

just reading this third and noticed a number of your dc are attending summer schools this year and some also attended last year. please could you give some details about them as dd currently Y11
many thanks

oneteen · 01/07/2019 17:25

DD not doing summer school but I found this site really good for both looking at what is available for summer schools/taster days www.ucas.com/events/exploring-university/learn-about-uni-taster-course

Numbersaremything · 01/07/2019 19:48

Hi Eat. DD's summer schools are all expenses paid through Oxford's UNIQ outreach scheme and the Southern University Network's outreach scheme, so she had to meet strict criteria to be offered a place. DD also got a place on the Cambridge HE+ scheme, but that was run locally with a final trip to Trinity, rather than it being a residential summer school. She also attended a Cambridge master class in the spring and these are open to all.
