Well I have finally bought my dress for the summer ball.

I am now really nervous after reading another thread saying dont go for this type of dress - what do you all think - is it too OTT? I am sure that most of the ladies wear this kind of dress for the ball?

Anyway its below in deep red:

That is gorgeous! Do you need a wrap thingy as well?

nell12 · 16/06/2008 19:52

It looks lovely. Bring a pashmina or wrap to keep your shoulders covered, and you warm when you are on the dodgems at 2am

triffictits · 16/06/2008 19:53

Yes, need to find a wrap too effie. Oh yes, remember the dodgems in the early hours nell!

So you dont think its too ott?

no experience of forces events, but aren't they pretty formal? I think it would be fine and it isn't too frilly/spangly/bridesmaidlike

yes the ones i have been too are quite dressy.

Lady in the shop said she had never sold it as a bridesmaid dress, only a ballgown

Lapin we saw a girl with her parents at the Dartmouth ball last Christmas with a GIANT flouncy brides dress on, complete with sparkles

She did look very sweet but my sister and i still tittered

That dress is perfect!

triffictits · 16/06/2008 20:12

thank you.

I will post pics after the event! Not got the dress yet - they are just altering it a little for me and i pick it up in 2 weeks.

Oh god LL, I am now panicking that you have passed judgement on me whilst at a Dartmouth ball

I have lots of memories of wandering about the quaterdeck at Dartmouth and spotting the dyed, 1980s wedding dresses

largeginandtonic · 16/06/2008 20:24

Ah yes, excellent spying position that

I find swaying over the balcony having drunk entirely too much champagne before dinner especially good fun.

I want to go to a ball!!! Why is dh away?? Grrrrrr

oh gawd, are you sure this dress isnt too flouncy? It does stick out a bit because there is netting underneath it.

largeginandtonic · 16/06/2008 20:31

Now Triff does your dress look like this?

largeginandtonic · 16/06/2008 20:32

No it is perfect!!! Flouncy means triple netting at least, from the waist down.

I had a friend who wore a flouncy dress to a ball (Collingwood) was on the bouncy castle, jumped up and left her skirt behind
