It is dead, in cutlets.

I need some reassurance and recipes please.

Have you ever cooked/eaten shark?

Why?

What's wrong with normal food?

Throw it away and open a tin of spam.

meltedmarsbars · 13/05/2010 14:00

Well, the fish man is soo nice and always has such lovely fresh fish, and I sometimes do try something different...

...but shark? What was I thinking?

I have only ever eaten in dried or marinated in sweet chilli and corriander then on the BBQ but I did live in South Africa and Dad occasionally caught one when out fishing. I don't think I would ever have sone out and bought any

In NZ that's the fish they use for fish and chips - it's very tasty (but I have no idea how to cook it at home).

It is good in batter, or with marinade made from sambal (Malaysian/Singaporean chili sauce).

at the idea of lurking sharks

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/05/2010 14:08

Are you sure it's shark. Not conger eel or dogfish sold as shark.

Umm, cover it in prir piri seasoning and fry it in a pan (Nigella eat your heart out).

Or give it to the cat.

Bless you though for buying it because the fish man is nice.

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 13/05/2010 14:09

I think it can be used like swordfish? Grilled with lemon, olive oil, salt, pepper, hardy herbs? Or baked with topping of your choice.

ExH (Aussie) liked shark - I hate seafood but I do remember him bbqing it and doing like above.

HTH

Must add though

meltedmarsbars · 13/05/2010 14:10

Sorry, have no cat, just me and 2 dc's eating tonight (dh in China eating equally dubious food )

Might be dogfish. Without doing a DNA test, how do I know?

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 13/05/2010 14:12

Does it woof when you press it?

Does it have a wet nose, glossy coat?

meltedmarsbars · 13/05/2010 14:16

No, its white and cutlet-shaped with pale greeny-blue coat. It is damp, though.

Should I be worried?

Just cook it and feed it to the kids as fish and when they have eaten it tell them what it really was - you will be the talk of school tomorrow!

LouIsOnAHighwayToHell · 13/05/2010 14:57

Shark is always used in fish and chips in the Southern Hemisphere.
Next time don't buy it. Only buy line caught fish.
I would batter it, marinade it or whack in on the bbq.

maria1665 · 13/05/2010 15:07

Swordfish is a type of shark - it is probably swordfish. Its sturdy - you can practically treat it like pork. Marinade it with lemon olive oil and thyme, or fry up with soy sauce , orange juice and honey.

Its been ages since I've seen it, but it used to be really common. I am sure they used to be line caught as well. Just eat it - it must have cost a packet. Then next time, buy mackeral, cheaper, sustainable, better for you and delicious.

OtterInaSkoda · 13/05/2010 16:01

Are all shark verboten then?

Not that I've had any for years.

4merlyknownasSHD · 13/05/2010 16:31

Maria1665 is right, I think. I am sure that I heard several years ago that Swordfish is just a more edible shark. Dogfish is definitely a sort of shark.

MaryBS · 13/05/2010 16:36

I ate shark some years ago, when I went to Portugal. You can BBQ it, its delicious!

Yes, have eaten it. It is similar to pork ime.

SuziKettles · 13/05/2010 21:00

Dogfish is a type of shark I think.
