I have just started to decorate my own cakes, I was given a cake decorating book for my birthday after constantly complaining about the quality of birthday cakes in the supermarket.
My question is this; where [online] would you recommend I buy my bits and pieces, and what should I buy?
I have had a look around and am feeling overwhelmed by the choice. What colour paste should I go for? I am also a bit confused about edible sparkle/glitter powder. Some websites say it it inedible, some say it is non toxic and you could eat it.

Baubles need a good few days to dry properly before they are painted anyway. Debi I would take the lid off the tupperware IIWY.. I left mine on a cooling rack for until I painted them (and again afterwards as the colour took ages to dry).

Plum, are you using SR flour and baking powder? The only time my cakes have sunk is when I've added extra baking powder. They kind of over-rise and then collapse when they come out of the oven and the hot air inside cools.

stealthsquiggle · 03/12/2009 20:41

or is it possible that you have super super straight-from-the-chicken eggs? Eggs have to be a couple of days old before you use them for baking.

DebiTheScot · 03/12/2009 21:59

Thanks Stealth, have taken the lid off.
No ideas for the sunken cake though

PlumBumMum · 04/12/2009 19:38

Think it was a combination of eggs to large and too much baking powder but cakes are done

the elephant engagement cake is finished and on profile,
delivering it tomorrow, dhs cousin got a threw together tent cake for tomorrow took me 30 mins to do but didn't turn out to bad, left dd1 to prick the grass in the icing

Moosy · 04/12/2009 19:54

Oh Plum, that's lovely! It's really come together and is beautiful, I bet they'll love it

DebiTheScot · 04/12/2009 20:53

that's really nice Plum. How do you do your writing? I love the font.

I've tried to paint my baubles tonight. Not happy at all with my purple. Its too dark and greyish. Is a Squires dust. I think I want a bright blue instead, where can I get 1 quick?
The gold looks good though although I think I made it a wee bit thick as its not gone on very smoothly. Can make more though.
Have iced the cake too, looks ok apart from not being square.

Never realised this cake would become such a big project. Have much respect for those of you have done more than 1.

PlumBumMum · 04/12/2009 23:20

They are funky cutters, you have to get 2 sets, one capitals/numders, and the othe small font. I think they are called funky, will check tomorrow and let you know

The cake is a little different, the couple met in a place called the elephant something, and she loves orange, therefore orange elephant engagement cake

bellavita · 04/12/2009 23:26

Fab cake Plum.

My order has not actually arrived yet although I got an e-mail today to say it had been despatched. Just hope it does not turn up at work tomorrow because no one will be there.

bellavita · 05/12/2009 22:18

Have made my second christmas cake. I looked at it after 2 hours and 40 mins (same one as last time) which should be cooked for 4 hours (last one I did for 3) and bloody hell, it was cooked. DH said to me oh this cake looks much lighter than the other is it a different recipe or is it because it ain't burnt....

DebiTheScot · 06/12/2009 15:35

ordered some glacier blue sugarflair dust from ebay. Hopefully it'll come soon and will be ok.

stealthsquiggle · 06/12/2009 22:26

Oh the elephants are soooo cute.

I still haven't made any baubles and they have to be dry, painted and on cakes by Wednesday night

For those that have my flickr link, my fairy castle is finally on there after my camera came home today.

stealthsquiggle · 07/12/2009 09:16

I was on my way to bed last night when I got waylaid by my bauble mould

My purple (violet - I will check the make) came out pretty well, but I have yet to add silver/gold for the stars, which will be the fiddly bit.

bellavita · 07/12/2009 10:14

I am still awaiting my dusts and lustre spray >

Moosy · 07/12/2009 12:42

Cake making on hold - baby born

PlumBumMum · 07/12/2009 13:07

YEY congratulations Moosy

girl or boy details please.........

PlumBumMum · 07/12/2009 13:09

Oh and it must have been too much baking powder as my last 2 cakes are grand minus baking powder

So Neills flour must be better than Tesco own, because that was the difference also

Moosy · 07/12/2009 13:14

Glad they turned out well Plum.

It's girl - 8lb 2oz, 7.40am yesterday, on her due date! She's called Felicity and she's really rather nice

stealthsquiggle · 07/12/2009 13:37

Congratulations Moosy

I expect to see you back and cake-making in a matter of weeks months - do you have plans for a Christening cake already?

Enjoy your LO.

DebiTheScot · 07/12/2009 14:18

Congratulations Moosy

Stealth are you doing the tiny baubles? I tried painting the stripes on them and it wasn't easy at all. I might just put some of the other 2 on but that might be boring.

bellavita · 07/12/2009 15:35

Ooooo congratulations - Felicity, what a lovely name

Btw - my order of lustres has turned up (I am still at work so cannot look in the box yet). >

Moosy · 07/12/2009 16:47

Thank you everyone, we don't do Christening so we won't have a cake for that, but I'm sure I'll find an excuse for something soon! Just glad I got the big Christmas cake done in time!

Xavielli · 07/12/2009 17:53

Congrats on the baby!!

Are baubles still in for this year? :P

bellavita · 07/12/2009 18:33

I have just opened my decorating stuff. I ordered gold, silver and purple lustre dusts, cake board, brush and pearl lustre spray. They have sent me a gold lustre spray instead of the actual dust, but only charged me for the dust.

What do I need to do? Spray all over with the gold and just paint the bits I need with the other colours? Will it work?

stealthsquiggle · 07/12/2009 18:43

I have done some tiny baubles but haven't really tried painting them yet.

IIWY I would paint first and then spray, IYSWIM - or just play with it and see how it goes.

Moosy - you can have a 'welcome to the world' party + cake without doing the christening bit - we did
