where and what to buy for cake decorating.

I have just started to decorate my own cakes, I was given a cake decorating book for my birthday after constantly complaining about the quality of birthday cakes in the supermarket.
My question is this; where [online] would you recommend I buy my bits and pieces, and what should I buy?
I have had a look around and am feeling overwhelmed by the choice. What colour paste should I go for? I am also a bit confused about edible sparkle/glitter powder. Some websites say it it inedible, some say it is non toxic and you could eat it.

Oh yes welcome to the world party, there are lots of lovely things you can do for a babies cake

enjoy your new baby, especially just before christmas, dd2 was 7 weeks for her first christmas and I loved it

Am in the middle of a camprock cake,
a black music note was requested so off to christmas tree light switch on,
then back to jazz it up abit

In a classic case of this game being a hole to pour money down, I have just found a Christmas tree stencil here which would fit perfectly on the top of my little cakes - so I could have stencilled trees with 3D baubles

The only thing stopping me wasting investing still more money is that I wouldn't get it in time - I need to finish most of the cakes tomorrow.

I need some help!!

I am failing miserably at making sugar glue. The book says mix sugarpaster with boiling water. It should make a thick paste it says. But it doesn't. I've tried using less water and more sugarpaste but it never seems to get thick.

I can't get to a cake shop and it won't arrive in time for the party on Saturday.

I have sugarpaste, icing sugar and gum tragacanth. Can I make sugar glue with any of this stuff?

Thanks.

stealthsquiggle · 09/12/2009 22:26

Yes you can!

Forget the sugarpaste thing - just mix suprisingly little gum tragacanth with some (hot) water to make a jelly-like paste and away you go. When it gets too thick and globby add a bit more hot water.

Kayzr · 09/12/2009 22:36

That is fantastic. Thank you so much Stealth.

How can I stick my baubles on my cake? I don't have anything proper to use. I put Gum Arabic on my amazon wish list and someone has bought it so I don't want to buy anything.

stealthsquiggle · 10/12/2009 16:00

soggy lumps of sugarpaste, Debi

That sounds awful, but if you knead some sugarpaste with some water until it is really sticky, you can then use it like blu tac to stick the baubles on. It wouldn't work with more delicate things, but once dried the baubles are pretty tough (mine all survived being stuck on in a hurry at midnight last night )

..or royal icing would work, too.

Why does this thread keep jumping to I'm watching

I was going to suggest that but thought you might all laugh

Incase you don't see the other thread Stealth Smyths is a brilliant toy store here but they have loads opening in England etc, how much of a country mouse are you?

stealthsquiggle · 11/12/2009 12:27

Thanks, PlumBum..

anough of a country mouse that I could pay inflated online prices and it would be less than RRP + diesel to the nearest one

I am beginning to regret buying those bauble moulds. They are a nightmare to paint. I'm struggling to get the consistincy of the paint right. It's either too runny and doesn't cover it properly or goes lumpy and streaky when I try to do the detail bits.

DebiTheScot · 18/12/2009 22:23

It's made. I know most of you have made a million cakes and are experts but I am very proud of this one! The photos are on my profile (please ignore the fact that it's not square)

Interested to see the other bauble cakes to see what they are like too.

PlumBumandBaublesMum · 19/12/2009 22:35

Debi I love it, brilliant, and love your other cakes too, hope you enjoy eating it

I am quite as I didn't make a christmas cake and always believed I didn't like them but have found a new taste for tham

bellavita · 20/12/2009 13:37

I marzipanned my cake yesterday and put the fondant on today. I have no idea how I am going to arrange the flippin baubles. Can I just say that pearl lustre is a godsdend! Cannot remember who said it was fab!

Am hoping that I will have a flash of inspiration about arranging the baubles...

MrsBun · 23/12/2009 09:56

Wow at all your amazing talents everyone. Bella pointed me in this direction. I would love some pointers for a chocolate cake recipe that wasn't Madeira but suitable for covering. Tried one yesterday and wasn't that impressed. Meanwhile I will continue to oggle at all your masterpieces!

MrsBun · 23/12/2009 11:29

oh great thank you plum bum. I was thinking of doing ganache in the middle and buttercream on the outside (heard it is easier to get a straight edge with butter cream). Do you know if i could make the BC now to use on sunday?? Cheers

PlumBumandBaublesMum · 23/12/2009 12:14

Yeap buttercream will be fine for Sunday

bellavita · 24/12/2009 23:02

MrsBun - buttercream also freezes well too.

MrsBun · 29/12/2009 11:32

YAY - I did it! Cake picture on profile. Was a real feat but so rewarding so thanks to all that supported. My daughter went wild as I had managed to keep it hidden from her. I made the top layer a lemon cake with lemon curd and buttercream icing and the bottom was chocolate with 50% chocolate ganache and 50% what the americans call swiss meringue icing.

MrsBun · 29/12/2009 11:33

For those that haven't seen my many confused queries this is my first attempt.

Littlefish · 30/12/2009 09:35

You don't seem to have a profile Mrs Bun. I'd love to see your cake.

MrsBun · 30/12/2009 10:51

ah ha - have now activated it!

PlumBumandBaublesMum · 31/12/2009 14:53

Brilliant looks beautiful!! Well done
