and maybe some cinnamon for sprinkling?

cleaningsucks · 01/10/2009 19:42

good with a bit of almond essence in too. or with pears. or plums. or both.

janeite · 01/10/2009 19:43

Oh yum - yes to cinnamon. Chuck a bit our way - the teachers could all do with cake at the mo! We were reduced to Hobnobs this afternoon and they are the biscuit of the devil.

My mum used to make something similar - but there was a layer of pastry at the bottom, then fruit, then the cake mixture on top. Has anyone ever seen a recipe for something like that?

PVish · 01/10/2009 19:45

Wouldn't be hard to make up GM....

It does look lovely. I have a recipe for German apple cake which I was going to do this weekend but that looks nicer. Mind you, I made an Eve's pudding last weekend and was virtually the only one to eat it .

PVish · 01/10/2009 19:48

god me to DG
i love puddings
dh not bothered and kids allergic to fruit.

GrapefruitMoon · 01/10/2009 19:54

I assume you mean dislike rather than actually allergic Pvish? The trick is to make the fruit bit v. sweet and jam like. My very fussy ds1 now eats apple crumble as long as it it lots of crumble and very little apple!

The also love Marslady's lemon drizzle cake. And sometimes I can get them to eat muffins with grated apple in... Oh and they'll eat carrot cake. In fact the trick is to always call it cake but not say what is in it...

fishie · 01/10/2009 19:55

how sweet is it? will it break when you cut it up?

Dumbledoresgirl · 01/10/2009 19:57

Oh mine will eat apple crumble, and lemon things and all sorts of puddings with fruit hidden in it, but they wouldn't eat my Eve's pudding damn 'em. It was delish but not what I wanted for my waistline. Wish I had a staffroom I could spread my Dorset apple cake around so I could make it without having to eat it all myself.

Guad · 01/10/2009 19:57

too autumnal for me

I closed my eyes when I walked past the pumpkins at the veg shop today

GrapefruitMoon · 01/10/2009 19:58

You never went back to teaching then? I'm still undecided on what my next fabulous career will be too!

Dumbledoresgirl · 01/10/2009 20:01

Had pumpkin last weekend too - god I was good last weekend, buying seasonal produce!

No GM, I dipped a toe and found the water had gone cold.

StirlingNeedsAHoliday · 01/10/2009 20:18

Totally agree, I have made the Dorset Apple Traybake a few times and it is perfect for a pudding with custard when hot and then I slice it like a cake when cold and it is still lovely.

BTW I dont layer it like it says in the recipe. I chop the apple into tiny pieces and just mix it into the sponge mixture. But the demerera sugar on top is gorgeous - makes it lovely and crunchy

PVish · 01/10/2009 20:18

have sliced and left in tin for trnasportation
it must be pretty sweet - look at the sugar
