If you had to buy burgers from the supermarket for a BBQ...

If you had to buy burgers from the supermarket, rather than make your own, for a variety of very dull reasons I won't go into...

...where would you get them from? We were at a friends bbq last week and theirs were from Morrisons and they were completely devoid of any taste whatsoever, so i'm thinking, not Morrisons. Or are they all the same? No butchers near me either, gah.

Does anyone know of any half-decent supermarket beef burgers they would serve at their bbq?

thanks

Since I discovered how easy burgers are to make myself I never buy shop brand.

-Just chop up small onion fine, add to fresh lb mince, throw in some bread crumbs and some black pepper and pinch of salt.
Flour your hands and shape to what ever size burger you want.
Throw on the BBQ.
You can also add sauces to the mix such as sweet chilli, bbq tomato relish.

Thats it Brigit, I do normally make my own, which is why I'm a bit snobby unsuure about supermarket ones. Unfortunately due to fridge/freezer space/timing issues it isn't going to be possible to make my own, I don't think. Although if everyone comes on here and says how nothing compares to homemade ones (as i suspect) then i might have to try and work out a way to do it somehow.

can't you go to a farm shop or a butcher?

Waitrose do ok ones, aberdeen angus

I would make them if you can

I am currently obsessed with lamb koftas they are YUM and take about 30 seconds, you could make just before cooking

No butchers reasonably near us, normally we could drive further afield on a saturday but we will need to get these after work on the friday evening. farm shop might be an idea though, I wonder how late they stay open. Will google.

We had some from sainsbury's last night. They were from the meat counter bit, they may have been taste the difference, possibly from scottish cows, can't remember. They were really rather nice.

maybe you could get some delivered from a local organic veg box type place - most seem to do meat and dairy too?

sainsburys taste the dif ones are ok too.

forgot that local farm shop only sells pork and chicken not beef.

Sainsury's could be a winner, theres one 5 minutes away from us.

Those Sainsbury's ones are horrible! Far too salty for a start, and don't taste on anything apart from salt imo.

So much easier and nicer to get some really nice mince and make your own.

Although we've never tried the meat counter ones, only ever the packaged ones and even then only when they're reduced! Meat counter could be OK for all I know.

you know what? if you put enough yummy things on top of the burger, they'll taste ok anyway!

get some nice fresh bread rolls, and toast them on the bbq too..how about some nice fresh salad, big slices of beef tomatoes, slice of bacon? some nice salsa/bbq sauce/tomato sauce etc and some nice slices of chedder to melt on top.

mmmm. hungry!

Sainsburys TtD ones are nice. (They are or recently were on 2 for £4) I recommend the Lamb & moroccan spice (or something) ones. Scotch beef ones are ok but nothing special.

Tescos finest ones are pretty good, although still not as good as homemade, really.

my dad works for a burger and sausage factory, hence I would not buy anything below superior level in supermarkets (you know, labelledasextra special or whatever) though I prefer our local butcher

And dad says (and dad cleans the machine) never, ever buy chicken burgers.

Iceland?
iirc you can get a whole bag of BBQ 'meat' for a fiver...

could you e-mail a butcher about delivery? ours will happily do it which is so much easier (ours a drive away like yours)

We keep Sainsbury's Be Good to Yourself burgers in the freezer as they are the only ones we've found DD likes). DH coats them with BBQ sauce before cooking, they aren't bad at all.

Will have to try the TD ones sometime.

Of course homemade is nicest, though I never seem to be able to get the onion fine enough.
