Slow energy release snack ideas please

For DD1 who is 10 and having headaches poss due to low blood sugar. Need to supply her with snacks for school breaks and her lunch box.

My dd had this problem too earlier this year - she is 12.

I gave her a hearty breakfast (protein and unrefined carbs). She had 2 bran crackers and a piece of fruit at morning break, school lunch and 2 bran crackers and a piece of fruit at afternoon break.

How long has your dd had the headaches? My DD's ended up a short term thing and with hindsight coincided with a growth spurt.

oh, ment to add - nuts and seeds a great idea but DD unable to take nuts to school due to nut allergy DC in her year at school

Headaches for a couple of weeks. She is skinny and tall. Could be growth.
She does not like nuts. In fact she is very picky which, given how skinny she is, is a worry.
Tell me in detail about protein and unrefined carbs please.

nairns oatcakes and Humous (good mix of carbs, protein, good fats)
fruit with seeds if she won't eat nuts
ryvita with piladelphia ? would that be do-able in a lunchbox..
hard boiled eggs
chicken drumsticks

Refined carbs (bread, pasta, cakes, pastries, biscuits etc) will send her blood sugar levels soaring and then they will crash, which produces the hypoglycaemic headaches, shakiness, moodiness etc. Protein and essential fatty foods break down a lot slower and so consequently keep you going for much longer. If you can give her a protein dense breakfast and avoid sugary cereals, that will also help. Things like omelettes, or even porridge made with milk.

Great there are some things there that she will eat.

Did wonder about flapjacks as they have a lot of sugar in them.

Dr didn't think dehydration because she gets the headaches first thing in the morning when her blood sugar will have dropped overnight and mid afternoon again another common time for a dip.

give her a protein snack before bed too, that should also help with the headaches in the morning.

You can homebake flapkacks and put lots of seeds and nuts in them, with less sugar than the recipe calls for (we use agave nectar or xylitol), that will slow the release of the sugar from the carbs

Would she eat poridge for breakfast?

My dd also 10 (tall and v slim build) has regular episodes at school of feeling faint etc.

But she's one of these people who prefers to eat little and often and just won't have big bowls of porridge or much at all for breakfast.

School will only permit fruit or veg for snacks which she likes but I think she needs more carbs. The school banned the cheese and crackers that I was sending in for her - but that was working well until they stopped it. They were pretty unhelpful, if not obstructive actually, but that's another thread .

I do try to give her a good breakfast if/when she'll eat it. We went through a phase of toasted cheese sandwiches for breakfast which kept her going quite well until lunch.

She went off porridge [like most things] when she was about 2.

Ok this is weird - what about rice pudding? Similar to porridge. I might try that on dd for breakfast.

Honestly the shelves of cereal you can get, but she's a right fuss pot and only wants my Special K. It's me that needs to shift weight! There's nothing of her!

Well if cereal is out then those masses on the shelves are no use.
Rice pudding is 'ick' apparently.

One of her favourites is pasta with butter and parmesan as an example of bland things.

Oh wow.
Am trying to think of any strong foods she likes and apart from some sour sweets can come up with none.
Very interesting. So I should lay off the hassling and feed her bland versions of everything?
