Need 2 lost weight urgently but very stressed and no willpower

Chiccadum · 03/02/2003 19:51

Has anyone out there got any tips, i really need to lose weight for an upcoming holiday so i can go in the swimming pool with, dh, dd1 and dd2, otherwise one dd will not be able to go in. The thing is i have a couple of battles going on, one with british gas the other Butlins and as a result very very stressed out and want to pig out, i am a member of a gym and try to go regularly but find it hard to cut down on food especially with running round after two kids during the day and also when dh is on nights and i get bored. Please help!

Just buy a swimsuit that fits, forget your weight and enjoy yourself in the pool with your kids. When's the holiday?

Chiccadum · 03/02/2003 20:09

July, but feel very very self concious, it doesn't help with school children round here calling me lard arse when i'm out walking with my girls. I've put on 8 stone since meeting dh but have lost 4st through a bad pregnancy and dh is forever telling me how fantastic i look but even though i am very outgoing and sometimes too loud I worry what people really think. I must admit I can eat a tattie more than a pig and love my food, i'm not making any excuses for been overweight, it is all my fault.

jasper · 03/02/2003 20:22

chiccadum don't try to lose lots of weight in a short space of time.
If you are really up for it though, July is a fair bit away so with sensible eating (so hard isn't it?) and a bit more moving around you could shift 2 or 3 stones comfortably.

Lots of us here struggle with our weight and if you search mumsnet there are loads of threads on weight loss.
I was strongly opposed to slimming clubs but was making no headway in losing weight so joined weightwatchers and it has been really helpful.I know it is not everyone's cup of tea, but I was desperate!

Sounds like you have a lovely hubby and horrid schoolchildren in your area.

Chiccadum · 03/02/2003 20:31

Believe it or not i went there a few years ago and in the first week lost 8 pounds and on the second it was my period and i put on 3. When i was on the scales the leader said very loudly 'Whose been a piggy piggy and had her snout in the fridge' needless to say i never went there again even though i think weight watchers is very good. I know i am very lucky with my dh as he knew me when i was a size 10 and now when i am very large. He says he prefers me now as i'm not so big headed and there's more to grab ahold of.

OP posts:
jasper · 03/02/2003 23:23

Chiccadum there is no way a leader would be allowed to make those remarks nowadays. That is just atrocious.
I assure you they would be struck off their weightwatchers pedestal!!
At my class the leader is very careful noone hears or sees your weight except you. I have gained weight loads of times and she is always very sympathetic and helpful.
Go on, give it another whirl! Assuming it's not the same leader

sueanna · 04/02/2003 09:28

I make sure I can't pig-out by not buying those 'naughty' foods. I have very little will power especially when there are chockies and biscuits around.
Also (I suppose the WW way) I lost a fair amount of weight just by changing my lunch to veggies with herbs or black pepper (and maybe a LITTLE spot of mayo). I put on 4stone with my pregnancy and I've now only got 10lbs to go, so it can be done... just think "veggies..yum!! biscuits..yuk!!"
How can you get bored with mumsnet open 24hours? I find I can lose several hours in the evening here!!
Good luck, my fingers are crossed for you.

mam · 04/02/2003 09:45

Chiccadum, I really know what you mean and I keep trying/failing - now I'm trying to treat myself to nice things like having nails done as I've let myself go because I hate the size of me and I can't bear to treat myself to clothes as they feel awful on me etc etc etc: now feel that I've let myself go too much just because of the weight. You have done so well so far don't give up on yourself the best thing I have read has been to stop letting the weight stop you doing things like Enid said buy that cossie and enjoy yourself and don't aim to lose too much too fast as it only puts you up for "failing" - fine words from one who is telling herself this every day especially at night when the temptation gets worse! I'm not looking forward to a flight later in the year because of the weight but trying not to concentrate on this as I only get moody with everyone and no-one has a clue why and why they can't drag me out of it so now trying to enjoy everything and not drag everyone I love down with me. Sorry to go on but best of look and buy the cossie! (PS if you find one that holds everything in place a little and doesn't cost a fortune please let me know!)

Crunchie · 04/02/2003 12:46

I do Slimming World and find it really helps as there is masses of 'Free' food, and not just veggie sticks and melon. Things like Jkt potato and beans which fill that empty feeling that isn't caused my hunger, but by stress or boredom. I don't cut down on my food intake, just change the type of food I am eating. I also have to ban all the snacks form the house - the kids can have a small thing when we go out, but I don't. Try this as you have time to lose a stone or twpo and you'll feel better

Bozza · 04/02/2003 12:53

I think keeping the junk food out of the house is a must if your are lacking in will-power and bored at nights as you say. It might be worth trying a dieting class again despite your bad experience. Otherwise you might find posting on the losing weight discussion (can't remember exact name) would help your motivation. I think this kind of support from Mumsnet can be really helpful.

Also wait until the last minute to buy the costume. Just see what weight you are then - but don't let it stop you enjoying your holiday and children.

AngieL · 04/02/2003 13:07

I know just how you feel. I had been doing weight watchers and was losing weight but I just seem to have lost my motivation. I've got about a stone to lose but I love chocolate and can't face dieting. I've been thinking about taking up some sort of exercise but I'm not confident enough to join a gym, so it will probably be walking or perhaps bike rides.

You are doing really well though if you have lost 4 stone, you should feel proud. I have to agree with jasper, your dh sounds lovely.

Caterina · 26/04/2003 19:02

Chiccadum, if you are really desperate to loose weight in a short time, why don't you try the Dr. Atkins' Diet, lots of fat and cheese and meat and no calories counting. I would only do it for 2 weeks though, just to kick me start, then I would go on a sensible eating plan. Then try to find some activities you enjoy doing and stick to it, I was a couch potato until I discovered I really love aquareobics and I am now addicted to it. I am 34 weeks pregnant now, and feel really odd in my cossie at the swimming pool, so I know what you mean, but I think that I am doing something that will help me get back into shape soon after the birth. Why don't you try it? This will give you an excuse to buy a swimsuit, and you will get used to seeing yourself in a cossie while doing something good for yourself. You have a couple of months to go, and even if you don't reach your target, but look toned and confident, that should do the trick: good luck! PS I also think you have a lovely dh!

Chiccadum · 26/04/2003 21:40

Well, I finally decided that I couldn't really do it on my own and needed some help along the way, so I have joined WeightWatchers on line, this is the first week but I have done really well and stuck to the amount of points given, dh is being fantastic, he is cooking my meals for me and helping to take my mind off food. My first weigh in is on Monday, so I will have to see how it goes

eidsvold · 27/04/2003 18:10

i found WW fabulous chiccadum although i attend weekly meetings. Have bought a couple of their cookbooks and the range of food is great. Also very tasty.

Hope all goes well on Monday.

Tongy · 28/04/2003 18:54

Just wanted to say hi to Chiccadum and say that completely know where your coming from. Hope you have found a swimming cossie by now - if not try Bravissimo - they stock a good range in large cup sizes that offer good support. I buy mine from their and its amazing what a difference a good fitting costume makes to your self confidence.
Have just started a fitness plan this evening - will focus on doing 10/20 mins exercise a day and see what happens. Totally know what you mean about being exhausted with two kids - so hard to motivate isn't it? By the way Rosemary Connerly does an excellent cookbook with low fat dishes in which taste great.

Chiccadum · 28/04/2003 20:43

Well, after all the hard work that I put in last week I have lost 4lb, so I'm pleased with myself.

I'm going to the gym three or four times this week so hopefully I'll lost something this week too

OP posts:
Dahlia · 28/04/2003 20:52

WW is fab IMO - best way to lose weight and keep it off, I have kept all my stuff from before I got pregnant and am going to start it again once baby is born. The Atkins diet is allegedly brilliant in the short term, but can have really hideous effects longterm. And slim fast delicious nutritious shakes that change your life are a pile of pap and taste like strawberry vomit.

eidsvold · 01/05/2003 21:48

Chiccadum - meant to check earlier in the week to see how you got on - WELL DONE!!

Hope you found it as good and as painless as I have so far - for me - WW has helped me lose my first stone. Achievable with not too much thought and effort - so Hang in there....

Tongy · 07/05/2003 19:05

Hey Chiccadum - good for you! I have been managing to keep doing the cross-trainer but haven't weighed myself so don't know if have lost anything yet! Am pretty sad though because I've made a chart with little boxes that I can tick when I've done it - makes me feel good and if it works who cares?! Not doing it tonight though because have no hot water and am too wimpy to have a cold shower!!!

Chiccadum · 07/05/2003 20:25

I got weighed yesterday and I lost 7lb last week, so that makes it 11lb in two weeks

OP posts:
eidsvold · 07/05/2003 22:15

Excellent work Chiccadum... well done you!!

Hope my weigh in tomorrow night is as successful but I am feeling very bloated this week... need to keep better track of things.

Tongy · 08/05/2003 11:41

Chiccadum - that is brilliant - you are inspiring me to keep going!

Chiccadum · 14/05/2003 14:53

Got weighed on Monday just gone and lost another 3lb making it 1 stone in 3 weeks

OP posts:
bunny2 · 15/05/2003 12:42

Wow Chiccadum. I am impressed. I have been thinking about Weightwatchers, keep putting it off as I am trying to conceive but I saw a photo yesterday and yikes, its bad. Well done to you.

Chiccadum · 16/05/2003 07:42

Bunny2, i shouldn't think that there would be any problem you doing ww whilst trying to conceive as on ww you can eat whatever you want, so it's really good, I would recommend ww to anyone

OP posts:
bunny2 · 16/05/2003 19:09

Chiccadum, thanks for the encouragement. It is probably the extra stone or two I carry that is making it hard to conceive so I am going to try WW. I will probably go to a class as the incentive for me will be the public weigh-in.
