Meal ideas - no kitchen!

newname98765 · 13/10/2026 17:24

Our kitchen is completely out of action for a few days (no microwave or air fryer either).

I’m about to go and grab a rotisserie chicken to have with baguette and salad this evening. What else
can I do over the next few days?

We had a takeaway last night and it was criminally expensive for what it was so I’d prefer to try and assemble myself if possible.

Thanks!

Buy a rice cooker. Pop in the rice water then the veg and meat and it all cooks. Add a variety of flavors

I'd get a cheap microwave, probably c.£50.
High-end ready-meals (Cook, Charlie Bigham etc), jacket spuds, frozen veg can all be done in it.

How many of you?

Somanyhotdrinks · 13/10/2026 17:52

You don’t need a kitchen to plug in a microwave

Have you got a BBQ?

Are all electrical points elsewhere also out of action?

newname98765 · 13/10/2026 17:53

I really don’t want another gadget like a microwave - it’s such a small kitchen and we don’t have any workspace as it is 😭

If it’s just a few days I’d make sandwiches, salads, cup a soups if you have a kettle. Buy some charcuterie and nice cheese. I wouldn’t go buying a new microwave or anything for a few days of use.

Ooh that’s a good idea - yes we do!

Oh right you don’t actually have a microwave or air fryer, sorry I misunderstood

Pot noodles??

Somanyhotdrinks · 13/10/2026 17:55

Any camping equipment?

MintTwirl · 13/10/2026 17:58

Do you have a slow cooker? Or a toastie maker? Slow cookers can be handy as you can do jacket potatoes on them or meatballs in a tomato sauce and have at meatball subs.
And you can get inventive with toastie fillings!

persisted · 13/10/2026 18:02

Mozzarella, ham, sausage rolls, cherry tomatoes, bags of salad, hummus, boxes of cous cous or pasta salad from the supermarket, flat breads. I’d eat variations of that for days. You could boil eggs, they would just take longer. I’d also be chatting up friends and looking for which pubs did mid-week meal deals…

ExplodingSmittens · 13/10/2026 18:03

Great of you have a BBQ!

24Dogcuddler · 13/10/2026 18:06

Toastie maker st the back of a cupboard? Blag an invite? M n S sandwiches and “ picky bits”

Pansykavalier · 13/10/2026 18:10

I wonder how our prehistoric ancestors survived…… especially before they discovered fire 😲

What’s your suggestion?

Hatty65 · 13/10/2026 18:13

For four of you for several days I'd probably have a word with friends or family and see if anyone would lend me either a slow cooker or an air fryer for a few days.

Cold food will become tiresome and depending on where you are the BBQ might be inconvenient weather wise. Takeaways are expensive.

mindutopia · 13/10/2026 19:03

What kitchen appliances do you have for cooking? Most people don’t just have a cooker. Slow cooker? Instapot? Toaster? Kettle? Sandwich press? You can plug these in anywhere.

If it was me, I’d be doing nice sandwiches (meat and cheese) on baguettes, with crisps and olives and salads. Ready noodles with miso in water from the kettle with shredded rotisserie chicken, coriander, spring onions, whatever salad veg you like. Sausages on bbq in brioche rolls.

24Dogcuddler · 13/10/2026 19:16

Also unless you are going it yourself prepare for it to be more than” a few days”

We went away for a week when our kitchen was being ripped out and refitted last year after moving. I think it was week 5 before we had a functioning kitchen.

At some point we didn’t even have running water just a standpipe in the bathroom ( which we were also having done)
Sorry just prepare for all eventualities.

BonyT · 13/10/2026 19:18

If it's only a few days I'd probably live off ready made meals deals and "poke" boxes.

Or set up a microwave in the hall/living room?

chasetheace99 · 13/10/2026 19:22

I bought a small oven with 2 rings on the top from Aldi - cost about £40 and more than made up for the extra cost of takeaways etc and I donated it to someone in a similar situation after I’d finished with it. I managed to cook a full roast in it 🙂

What DO you have? Fridge/freezer? Toasted sandwich maker? We bought a derelict property and the only working plug socket was near the floor. Ask friends/family if they have any appliances you could borrow. Ask on freecycle or olio and give it away if you don't want things afterwards.

We already had one of these electric fry pans https://www.argos.co.uk/product/q706q1as?region_id=Zone3_England_SemiUrban&gclsrc=aw.ds&&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=24086396080&utm_term=&utm_content=shopping&utm_custom1=&utm_custom2=740-167-4874&cmpid=GS_MP&GPDP=true&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=24081485645&gbraid=0AAAAAD9II9nH-6iMswHNS2rPYPFrbRvQ6&gclid=CjwKCAjwrbfWBhAeEiwAc2e6PqiV2998SAoPJ3ftDPsOeXFnCOm--aMMvdZj1BfFoqWAgdVExDJgjhoCmbMQAvD_BwE

A toasted sandwich press at least made something hot and doesn't take up too much space.
