Meal ideas - no kitchen!

Our kitchen is completely out of action for a few days (no microwave or air fryer either).

I’m about to go and grab a rotisserie chicken to have with baguette and salad this evening. What else
can I do over the next few days?

We had a takeaway last night and it was criminally expensive for what it was so I’d prefer to try and assemble myself if possible.

Thanks!

Fresh pasta in a pan, boiling water on top works well for something warm(ish)

Great idea thanks! I know this works with rice noodles but hadn’t considered it with fresh pasta!

I had to knock up a meal when staying overnight in a premier Inn recently, didn't fancy a takeaway and there was a Tesco nearby. I bought some of the Itsu gyoza, boiled eggs, edamame (all from the meal deal section) and a packet of Indomie Mi Goreng which only needs hot water. Was surprisingly satisfying. Idahoan mash just needs hot water and you could easily heat some peas with just water from the kettle could have with cooked chicken or cooked sausages.

Love this, thanks for the inspiration!

I bought a small oven with 2 rings on the top from Aldi - cost about £40 and more than made up for the extra cost of takeaways etc and I donated it to someone in a similar situation after I’d finished with it. I managed to cook a full roast in it 🙂

That sounds great! What a find!

You can do a fair bit with a kettle - eg boiled eggs (boil twice), ramen, couscous. Couscous mixed with tuna/chick peas and chopped veg & herb would be a good shout.

OK with the toaster you can get 'toaster bags', make up a sandwich pop in the toaster and you end up with a toastie.

The kettle

You can cook pasta by just leaving it in hot water for 10 mins. Put the water in a pad or dish and add pasta.

You can also cook kippers in hot water. Put the water in a ug and add kippers in the plastic bag

Cous cous.

Cup a soup, pot noodle other noodles.

My local council do 'meals on wheels' open to everyone, it's more expensive than cooking but cheaper than a takeaway.

Do you have a gurdwara near you? They always have free food available, you could make a donation in return for the food.

I already commented up thread, but get the 'Too Good to go' App. Its cafes/restaurants/shops giving away groceries, meals and/or snacks at reduced prices. Some are bags of groceries such as fruit/veg and bakery items but others are hot meals.

A local toby gives away a hot breakfast for about £2.79 which has hash browns, bacon, sausages, eggs, beans and tomatoes. They also do an amazing evening carvery for about £4. Yo sushi inside tesco give you 3 sushi packs for £6.79. We tried Greggs yesterday and for £2.99 got 4 sausage rolls, a filled baguette, sandwich and filled roll. We've also had things from the local India and Thai restaurants. Some of the evening things you can't collect till late, but depends where you live.

Ask friends and family if you can have a short term loan of a small appliance. When I had my kitchen done a colleague loaned me a two ring plug in hob which they just had in the spare room.

A slow cooker would also be good. Or maybe a second hand something like a microwave or air fryer. I know it seems wasteful to buy something but takeaway for multiple nights will be so expensive you would still probably save money if you bought an appliance new and donated it later!

For 1 night you could make do with packet mash you only need boiling water and a quiche with salad

Pimp up some instant noodle packets with hardboiled eggs (from those protein pots), beansprouts, cooked prawns and chilli oil

Skdkhvyvrhej · Yesterday 20:55

For a few days I would just get takeout.

but the figs are divine atm.
So Proscuittio, fig, goats cheese salad for lunch.
melon and Parma ham
mozarella and tomato salad

Dinners - Couscous with wraps and pre cooked chicken.

That sounds great! What a find!

If you’re going to buy a hob don’t mess around with anything but the ikea induction hob. That thing is incredible! Worth having around tbh. Gets bought out every Christmas.

Hawkinsresident · Yesterday 21:16

In same boat. Week 2 of being out of kitchen. But we our dinning table in living space to set up kettle, air fryer, rice cooker and microwave.

and we still order from home cloud kitchens. Costs £20 per family meal than £65

Hawkinsresident · Yesterday 21:19

Oh and bought an induction single from amazon £35 works perfectly !! Easy pasta

May I ask the same question as the OP, but with a bit of a twist....
My friend, her husband, adult son and their dog are currently having to stay in a hotel because their rented house has recently been diagnosed with subsidence.
They've just done 3 weeks in a Travelodge and have just been moved to a Holiday Inn, and have been told they're likely to be there for another 4-6 weeks.
They literally have 2 kettles (they're in 2 rooms) and a teeny tiny fridge they need for son's medication.
None of them are partial to Pot Noodles, so what can they have to eat because they're sick of takeaways, not only from the boredom side but cost too.

Get the too good to go app, see if you can get left over hot meals in your area x
