Silicon things in the dishwasher come out smelling of dishwasher

Not sure if this is the right section or even if there is any solution to this

I find that things come out the dishwasher smelling of detergent, we try to use the 'original' flavours rather than lemon or so but now and then its worse than others and even the 'original' flavours make the items smell of dishwasher a bit

However the worst culprits for this is the silicon stuff, does anyone else notice this, Im a bit of a super smeller so perhaps this is why but its quite annoying.

Straight out of the dishwasher I just boil a kettle and soak them for a bit in the boiling water with a few drops of Milton.

I found this years ago and like another poster stopped using silicone. I wasn't convinced that it didn't show it had some porosity and would be leaching microplastics. I prefer to use glass and steel tuppaware now.

I’m the same, I worry about microplastics.

All plastic has gone and I now use glass or stainless steel.

Smol dishwasher tabs don’t do this

User478 · 16/02/2026 14:48

We had this until we switched to smol, not had a problem since.

Don't use the dishwasher deodorising hanging things, they are even worse for it.

I don't like the feeling of silicone which has been in the dishwasher, so I tend to avoid it.

DH is obsessed with using fancy ridiculous pods and tablets for the dishwasher because he thinks expensive = better but IME the best thing is the most basic detergent you can find, dosed properly in the correct space for it. There's a liquid one which is OK. Our dishwasher is a bastard though and recently keeps complaining it has no rinse aid but then everything coming out has a thin layer of soap on it which I have to rinse off otherwise all food and drink tastes of salt. It's like the dishwasher is dumping all the rinse aid on everything in one go.

BertieBotts · 16/02/2026 17:28

Soap, not salt.

That link doesnt work for me

"Sainsbury's Greencare Kitchen All in One Dishwasher Tablets 300g" oh, not sure why. Try searching for this wording. They are unscented and have helped with my air fryer liners which has gone a bit lemony.Envy

Yes, yes, yes.

I made some fancy chocolate bark last Easter in silicone moulds and it was inedible. Will maybe give eco versions and low temperatures a go.

Im glad I posted this.

Yes I hate it when plastic things taste of the dishwasher. We are trying to switch to glass etc but ocean saver tabs don't leave a smell. They sell them in Tesco and are more expensive but are often on offer.

Desert76 · 16/02/2026 20:05

I agree, the taste lingers and is awful.
I threw away all our silicone kitchen stuff years ago and went back to wood or metal.
I also replaced all my non- stick pans with stainless steel, and have never looked back.

Is this why all my cookies baked on my silicone mats taste like soap?

We use these as well to reduce residue taste. Also mostly use Pyrex/glass/metal where I can. Really interesting info from PP about the porosity of silicon. Thank you for a useful thread.

Glad it’s not just me. I bought silicone spoons when I got a dishwasher, replacing wooden ones which (as I understand) can’t go in the dishwasher. However, the taste of dishwasher is really making me reconsider.

Ive been putting wooden spoons through the dishwasher. I figured the worse thing that could happen was that they might not last as long. So far no issues.

ETA I think wooden items with any kind of join are more of an issue, but a solid piece of wood like a spoon not so much. I do put them on the top rack.

CDTC · 16/02/2026 20:25

I hand wash all plastic and silicone because of this issue.

Thank you, I think I’ll go back to wooden spoons and replace as necessary.
