Silicon things in the dishwasher come out smelling of dishwasher

Not sure if this is the right section or even if there is any solution to this

I find that things come out the dishwasher smelling of detergent, we try to use the 'original' flavours rather than lemon or so but now and then its worse than others and even the 'original' flavours make the items smell of dishwasher a bit

However the worst culprits for this is the silicon stuff, does anyone else notice this, Im a bit of a super smeller so perhaps this is why but its quite annoying.

Thisnis a huge issue for dh. He is super sensitive to it.

I use almost no silicone anymore, or hand wash it.

We have experimented endlessly with tabs. Finish ultimate plus are least likely to trigger him. No cheapo tabs here. I buy in bulk on special to.avoid taking a second mortgage.

We have very hard water. Filter cleaning regularly, salt and rinse aid to keep the rinsing cycle effective.

ReadingCrimeFiction · 15/02/2026 13:38

Oh, and never use the eco cycle.

Purplerain1144 · 15/02/2026 14:52

Hand wash them instead

SlenderRations · 15/02/2026 14:53

Plastic food storage and chopping boards do this for me too

Morepositivemum · 15/02/2026 14:54

I hand wash all of those things, same with lunchboxes, it could be our dishwasher which is quite old, but it seems to effect them too much

Octaviathethird · 15/02/2026 15:23

I use a tiny bit of washing up liquid instead of dishwasher tabs because everything tastes like soap otherwise!

likelysuspect · 15/02/2026 15:42

I prefer to hand wash things but OH is obsessed with putting things in the dishwasher and grabs them before I get a chance.

It's not just me!!!

I've had to throw so many things away because of the dishwasher taste, including the food.

Nicecatneighbour · 15/02/2026 17:34

I found this with silicone muffin cases, not the dishwasher tabs but the smell of whatever was baked in them. A stale greasy baking smell that didn't go after they were washed. Binned them.

Nightmanagerfan · 15/02/2026 23:09

I had this and what works for me is using the Sainsburys own dishwasher powder in a blue box. I
no extra fragrance

WideOpenBeaches · 15/02/2026 23:10

I’ve had reasonable success with baking the clean silicone cases in the oven for 20-30 mins at a temp of about 130-140°.

CookingFatCat · 15/02/2026 23:36

I have the same issue!! I hate to even taste food off a silicone spoon!

BastardtheCat · 16/02/2026 03:54

I use citric acid and bicarbonate of soda instead of dishwasher tablets.

likelysuspect · 16/02/2026 08:35

For people not using dishwasher tabs, how do you load that up in the machine

I found this years ago and like another poster stopped using silicone. I wasn't convinced that it didn't show it had some porosity and would be leaching microplastics. I prefer to use glass and steel tuppaware now.

Namechangeyname · 16/02/2026 08:41

Yeah, I got rid of my silicone spoons because they make food taste of dishwasher tablets.

likelysuspect · 16/02/2026 08:45

The reason I got silicon spoons/spatulas/pasta forks etc etc, is because a lot of my cooking things are non stick so I didnt want them scraping stuff

The other silicon things I have are those fold up plastic pots for food storage, because of space I invested quite a lot in those.

I found the plastic utensils always go a bit manky after a while

Its a real nuisance.

I just put a few drops of washing up liquid into the dishwasher tablet holder and close it, it's important not to put too much or you get lots of bubbles! I also put a little pot of white vinegar on the top rack. I do have some dishwasher tablets and occasionally run it empty with one to give it a deeper clean.

SaltedCaramelBlondie · 16/02/2026 10:36

Same, including plastic storage boxes which in turn makes food taste of dishwasher. Switched to Ecover fragrance free tablets or supermarket own-brand equivalent. Gets stuff just as clean as the fancy capsules from other brands.

Silicone is a flexible polymer and, as such, is constructed of not just silicone but tiny pores or gaps that allow it to flex. It is porous. These gaps are too small to let water in, but volatile aromatic compounds can get in. To make matters worse, the pores expand when silicone is heated up and then contract when it cools down, trapping flavours etc inside.

Thank you for this - I was wondering if this was the case!

hexsnidgett · 16/02/2026 13:43

I have switched to these for that reason

Glad it’s not just me. I bought silicone spoons when I got a dishwasher, replacing wooden ones which (as I understand) can’t go in the dishwasher. However, the taste of dishwasher is really making me reconsider.

OvernightBloats · 16/02/2026 14:33

I used silicone liners in the airfryer a few times but ended up throwing them away because of the horrible smell they retained. They were really difficult to wash as well, especially trying to remove the greasy, oily feel from them.

Silicone baking products sound as though they are a good idea but in practice are nowhere near as good as glass and metal.
