What do I do?? Cooking apples mostly. The wind last night has brought a lot down and so I'm not sure how well they will store. This year's crop is bumper too.

Usually I do crumbles until it's coming out of everyone's ears. Or just stew them for breakfast but I don't think it's going to cut it this time. I like cooking so would love any recipe ideas!

Send some my way 😁. Seriously though... in previous years I have been lucky enough to have been given lots of lovely apples.

I usually prepare and stew cooking apples, chunky and not much cooked for crumbles etc, and smaller and well cooked for apple sauce. I then freeze what I can - bags are good as they don't take up so much room, and I bottle (can) apple sauce. Enough for the year! Then I use some to put with other fruit for the pectin when I make jams and jellies. I quite often give an apple upside down cake or tart to the kind people who have given me fruit. I make crab apple jelly, and you could probably make apple jelly with the tarter apples. Apple butter as well, and this is quite often spiced. Apple juice with the sweeter apples.

I have not yet tried making dried apple slices or apple leather (food) but both of those are ways to store apples. And for eating now... baked apples!

What Americans call apple sauce. Make loads of it. Delicious-and fantastic if anyone’s a bit unwell.

We have inherited an apple tree and it is absolutely full and I have had moments where I have felt that maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to have planted 4 more !

So far it has been crumble, pie, streusel and spiced apple jelly. My attempt at apfelkraut was a disaster but I may revisit that.

Some good ideas here, will get cooking again at the weekend.

Pig farms are a good idea. Tripes a la mode de Caen, bit of an acquired taste but excellent.

German apple cake uses loads:
make a high sided pastry case with ready rolled pastry, fill with finely chopped apples mixed with sugar and cinnamon, top with a crumble mix pressed down. Bake at 200C for about 45 mins.

Once your freezer is full, donate to your local foodbank!

Don't worry @Seaitoverthere not every year is like this!! We've had some years in the past with not a single apple and others that are heaving.

Oh thank goodness, it has been a bit of a shock to the system 😀

I’d be sad to not have apples and am my plum tree manages more than 2 plums next year wasn’t expecting so many apples having previously only had very young apple trees and not a mature one 🤣

Please could you (or anyone) tell me what you use to juice your apples. We are also appled-out this year, as are our neighbours.
Have dried and stewed and baked and apple caked and crumbled. And apple and damson jammed.
Apple juice would be lovely.

I prep and cook a load of cooking apples in the microwave (in the biggest pyrex bowl that will fit) and then freeze in a silicone loaf tin. Once frozen, turn out and put in a plastic bag, then back in the freezer. Defrost apple bricks as required for apple crumble or eve's pudding happiness throughout winter.
A punnet of reduced strawberries make a super tasty addition.

Also good for halloween pumpkins. The chutney is surprisingly similar to mango chutney, but tastes loads better than the commercial variety.

The National Trust website has some lovely recipes there. Just type "apples" in the search bar under the recipe section. On Wednesday, I made apple and honey scones, and they were delicious (even if I do say so myself! 😆).

Apple butter -

Peel and cube about 20 apples. Or don't peel and just cube. I've made this both ways.
Place in a big pot with about a scant teacup of sugar, soup spoon of cinnamon, dash of cloves, ginger, maybe some nutmeg, pinch of salt
Add water to cover by about two inches.
Simmer for ages, stirring and checking at intervals.
When they've boiled down a lot and attained a thick consistency, add a dash of vanilla, and use a hand held blender (or stand blender) to turn into a paste. If they're runny and not pasty, let simmer longer.

Decant into sterilized jars.
Keep in fridge.

You'll be surprised how much they boil down.

Very nice on toast or served with roast pork.

I made chutney yesterday. I managed to use 4kg of apples and made 15 jars, which now need to mature until Christmas. If you got some nice jars, they could make good presents.

I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old and work full time. I’m ashamed that some of them spoil. All cookers.

@isitmyturn@ohtowinthelotterythey do that around here too but our house is at the end of a cul de sac in a cul de sac. About 300 yards from a through road and a 100ft climb. It would be a ton of work to get them anywhere useful.

We used to bottle stewed apples growing up. They lasted all winter & we used them making crumbles, cakes, pies etc…..also yummy putting stewed apples on ice cream, porridge.
We had quite a big pantry & there’d be a whole shelf with bottled apples, then another with apple chutney, plus all the homemade jams.
It’s time consuming but not only saves money but tastes so much better than shop bought.

Take them to a pressing place and have them made into juice- if you get it pasteurised it keeps for a year of more

Dehydrate! Cored, sliced, sprinkled with lemon juice (or in lemony water for five mins) then into a warm oven for 12 hours. Or do what I do and thread them onto a pole and hang up in your hot air cupboard. Then stick into a jar; they last for ages and make great snacks or Christmas presents. Yum!
