Accidentally touching a hot plate

OP posts:

I saw a customer set her hair on fire blowing out birthday candles. But my worst was cutting the tip off my finger cutting cheese with a large bread knife

Arlanymor · 15/08/2025 17:07

'Peeling' the skin off my little finger when preparing mashed potatoes. I called 111 when it hadn't stopped bleeding after 20 minutes under cold water and they sent me to A&E. When I got there I was on my fifth tea towel to try and stem the flow and when I signed in, the woman on reception asked if I could please remove my arm from the desk (I was kind of propping myself up) because the sight of it was making her sick. This was about 18 years ago and I still have the scar from where they glued the skin back. That was a bit of a doozy.

CheeseWisely · 15/08/2025 17:10

Not me but someone I know. Grabbed a chip as they were being wrapped at the fish & chip shop, it was too hot, got stuck in their throat, fainted and cracked their head. Gluttony does not pay Confused

LaMadrilena · 15/08/2025 17:11

I cut my finger quite badly once on a particularly sharp sliver of baguette crust. Seriously.

isitmytime · 15/08/2025 17:18

i have many!
I stabbed my thumb separating frozen burgers and cut a tendon in the process. Had to drive myself to a&e then get referred to plastics to repair the tendon and stitch me up. Definitely not my finest moment

Cut the palm of my hand slicing open a baguette with a bread knife! That one only needed steri strips and a bandage.

badly burnt the bit between my thumb and forefinger ladling boiling hot lentil soup into a flask. The thick soup kind of stuck to my hand and I lost layers and layers of skin as it blistered the skin immediately. That was by far the most painful

Dabberlocks · 15/08/2025 17:27

A sliver of peanut cracknell embedded in my tongue.

Tarkan · 15/08/2025 17:36

I once carried a hot tray halfway across the kitchen without an oven glove before I even realised what I was doing.

So many burns but that was my weirdest one as I didn’t feel the heat from the tray until I looked at it and saw my bare hand.

I still have a small scar on my chest from sauce and cheese from a pizza dropping on me when eating it.

Many avocado and sharp knife incidents until I got myself an avocado tool and also learned to pop the stone out by pressing the outside after cutting the avocado in half.

Also have some small foot scars from dropping knives while cooking barefoot. Nothing too major though, didn’t need to go to hospital for any of them.

And probably the most painful, I got a shard of oyster shell stuck right up under my fingernail when shucking them and it took me ages to get it out again.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 15/08/2025 17:38

Mandolin! Ouch.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 15/08/2025 17:39

I also cut my finger open while opening a sausage packet with DHs Swiss Army knife, in the middle of the woods while on a picnic. We didn’t have a first aid kit so we wrapped it in a napkin and tied it with strips torn off a carrier bag. I had to cycle 5kms home.

SantanaBinLorry · 15/08/2025 17:43

Chipped a tooth on a prawn cracker 😭

I work in events/cook and varying sized and shaped ovens and grills (and only being 5ft!) Means I have a range on scars/stripes on my inner forearms from when I burn myself EVERY SINGLE TIME I use a new stove 😭

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 15/08/2025 19:03

Is cider food ?

While on a school trip many years ago, I was sharing a bunk with my bestie, & we had a bottle of cider between us.
I was thirsty, & said "pass it down". As I leaned out from the bottom bunk, she passed the large bottle down from the top bunk at the same time.
Chipped a front tooth !

Comedycook · 15/08/2025 19:05

I sliced the very tip of my finger off when slicing bread...the pain was unreal. I picked up the bit of finger and stuck it in the food waste bin...this was years ago and my finger is still slightly numb at the tip.

cheezncrackers · 15/08/2025 19:10

Slicing my finger open while cleaning a circular slicing blade when I worked in a deli. The end of fingers bleed A LOT! Repeated a few years later using a bread knife. I was getting faint from blood loss when it finally clotted. I was home alone and afraid I'd bleed to death in my own kitchen while all alone!

Milliejacksonhouseforsale · 15/08/2025 19:14

Slicing my thumb open on a corned beef tin.
Burning my lips with molten cheese underneath a pizza toppings.

SpottyAardvark · 15/08/2025 19:17

While trying to separate frozen beef burgers using a pointed knife (yes, I know…) I stabbed myself in the palm of my left hand. It was a tiny wound but I managed to hit an artery and blood immediately started spurting everywhere like a little geyser. It was on the walls, on the cupboards, on the floor, on my face.

I was alone in the house at the time and I knew I needed medical help so I grabbed a tea towel, pushed down on the bleeder and managed to run next door to ask someone to call an ambulance. The only person in was their young son, he was only about 10 but bless him he rang 999 for me. I couldn’t believe the state of the place when I got back. It looked like someone had been murdered.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 15/08/2025 19:27

Set my dressing gown on fire whilst frying an egg on a gas hob 🙄

Lunde · 15/08/2025 19:57

DH had to have surgery to remove a piece of beef that lodged at the bottom of his throat.

Dropping a pan of boiling caramel on my arm, I still have the scar
instantly shoved my arm under cold water which then set the caramel solid

IToldYouSoSee · 15/08/2025 19:59

Working in a fast food cafe whenI was 20, trying to serve soup from a pot that was higher than I could reach. Hot tomato soup all over my hand and lower arms. Absolute agony. In the days when health and safety weren’t a thing.

DiordreBarlow · 15/08/2025 21:36

About to start a new job on a Monday. Cooking the Sunday dinner I pulled the roasting tin out of the oven, leaned in to check how things were doing and my chin connected with the hot tray.

Ran to the sink to shove my chin under cold water, slipped and headbutted the tap pushing my glasses into my nose.

Arrived at my new job the next day with a massive bruise on my forehead, a cut across the top of my nose, a huge yellowy blister on my chin and sellotape holding my glasses together.

Milliejacksonhouseforsale · 15/08/2025 22:52

Some of these are horrific.

404PageNotFound · 16/08/2025 01:03

Turned the blender on to blend boiling hot soup without putting the lid on (old freebie blender from FB marketplace). My t-shirt stuck to my skin but fortunately no long term damage.
Nearly sliced the skin of my knuckle off opening a can of tuna. A few days later I reached into my bag for something and the not-yet-healed skin ripped off completely. There was a LOT of blood.

Oh you’ve reminded me of the time I was making marshmallow. I was heating up the sugar for it and as it was getting close to the temperature I needed I knocked the sugar thermometer into the pan and instinctively retrieved it with my fingers. 🙈

Wow that made me wince, I've burnt my hand with a wee bit of melted sugar and it hurt like hell.
I can't imagine what dipping your finger's in felt like.
