Accidentally touching a hot plate

I once lacerated the padding on my thumb while gutting what turned out to be a particularly vicious dead fish with razor-sharp teeth.

Not an injury per se, but when I was staying in my father's house after he died, I found a jar of dried pinto beans and thought I'd do something with them. I soaked them overnight and the following day cooked them in the pressure cooker for about 20 mins, like I normally do. They came out rock hard. So I pressure-cooked for another 10 mins. Same result. Five hours and several repeats later, some of the beans were just about soft, others not, but I had totally run out of time to do anything else, so thought "sod it" and turned it into a feijoada which had a little more crunch than I would have liked. Within a few hours I was bent double with absolutely uncontrollable flatulence which felt like I was farting out sandpaper, with a noise that could have been a supporting act at the Edinburgh Tattoo. As for the smell....

The following day I found some unopened packs of beans which had a best before date more than fifteen years previously, so dread to think how old the open pack was.

Edinburgh Tattoo! 😂🤣😂🤣

Not me but someone I know. Grabbed a chip as they were being wrapped at the fish & chip shop, it was too hot, got stuck in their throat, fainted and cracked their head. Gluttony does not pay Confused

The only time I ever fainted was eating too hot pasta. I was at work (restaurant) and hadn't eaten all day. Chef prepped it for me and I didn't realise how hot it was. Fainted in the kitchen and woke up to all the waiting team peering down at me. Smacked my head and elbow on the way down. V embarrassing.

I nearly chopped my finger off with the blade of a stick blender. I had made the bad choice to use it for buttercream on a cake and the butter got stuck. I can’t bend it properly any more but I’m amazed how normal it looks given how mangled it was.

I decided to remove a blockage in my blender with me hand without switching it off first..

It’s so reassuring to know this is actually quite common.

Left most of the skin on my palm on a very hot stainless steel frying pan handle...I'd been making a fritatta and was finishing it off in the oven..
2nd degree burns.
Had to go to minor injuries and get it dressed 3 times over the next few days.
I haven't made a fritata since 😣

Avocado, knife, bit drunk. So much blood. Wrapped it in a tea towel, drank more tequila.
I was living in Germany at the time and had not the first faintest idea how to get myself to some form of health care

I was eating corn on the cob from the bbq and some of the kernel skin was a bit burnt crispy. Then next day my gum blew up in a massive blister so I got an emergency dentist appointment thinking I had an infection. The appointment was at 2:30 (think about it!). The dentist pulled a piece of kernel out of the gum, apparently it's really quite common.

Brilliant user name and hope your gums are happy and heathy now!

I set myself on fire with the gas hob when very pregnant - wearing a bathrobe and it caught fire where I'd tied it in a knot over my bump.

Singed a plait at a birthday party aged 6 - I tried to lean in close to the birthday girl and my left plait swung forward over the candles. I saw a flash of flame and smacked my hair between both hands, then continued to sing 'Happy Birthday'. I think I was the only one there who noticed I had set myself on fire.

My husband burned his hand really badly on a steel toasted sandwich maker. I had left it plugged in but off at the plug next to the kettle. He thought he turned the plug kettle on - the sandwich maker was on "on" so it heated up. He put his entire hand on it - had to go to minor injuries it was so bad. I now make sure to switch everything off and unplug.

As kids my brother threw a Mars bar to/at me and it hit me in the eye. Had a shiner.
They were bigger in those days.

I did this. It was spectacular, as well as all the gore I thought I was going to lose the nails on my thumb, forefinger and middle finger, they were so chewed up.
They did recover, but it took several months.

incognitomouse · 20/08/2025 13:42

Bacon fat from the frying pan, leapt out and burned my nose and eyelid.

Food poisoning a couple of days after returning from Nepal. I was very ill for days. I had to give the GP a poo sample and it turned out to be a notifiable illness so my local council phoned me up to ask if I had eaten in any local restaurants. They weren't interested though when I said I had been abroad.
