Leftover ham ideas - NOT PIE!

BuzzieLittleBee · 06/01/2025 15:05

I bought and slow cooked a ham yesterday to make a chicken, ham and leek pie. I have half the ham left, but can't decide what to do with it. Obviously not a pie, and preferably not a pasta sauce - what else can I do with ham?! I'd prefer something 'interesting' in terms of flavour but am lacking inspiration. Google searches don't get much further than pie. Hoping someone here will have a bright idea or 2...

I always have this problem with ham as well!

Love a Swedish yellow split pea and ham soup. More recently (after Christmas) I used diced ham in a chinese style friend rice (with mange tout, onions, chilli, pineapple chunks, cashews, etc etc etc).

I dice ham and put into two or 3 freezer bags and then drag some out and use in whatever takes my fancy at the time. A macaroni and cheese etc. Or creamy ham and cheese crepes. But tbh I find leftover ham a bit of hard work.

Now I just fancy a crunchy ham baguette

So many good ideas! I’m taking note.

One recipe for leftover ham that I haven’t seen yet, is deviled ham or ham salad. It won’t look or sound promising, but it is more-ish.

The Best Ham Salad

The best ham salad recipe only requires a food processor, leftover ham, mayonnaise, celery, onion and perfectly combined seasonings!

Savoury pancakes?

Those baked potatoes where you scoop out the filling, mash it with cheese and return it to the potato skin shells, topped with diced ham, creme fraiche and chives, with a soft leaf green salad alongside.

chopped up in a macaroni cheese, with mushrooms and diced onions, sliced tomatoes on top, under the grill, dressed with parsley, yum
We have this evening, had sliced ham fried eggs and chips with brown sauce,
ham is so versatile and tasty.
Yesterday on fresh brown bread we enjoyed ham and thinly sliced soft pear.

We should have a MN cookbook (is there one) in separate volumes,
like Encyclopaedia Britannica

Quiche Lorraine
Fried rice
Eat with ratatouille and mustard mash or dauphinoise

Quiche
my favourite is an on toast thing.
toast the bread lightly
butter on side, spread with mustard and then top with white sauce and cheese (or a yogurt and one egg mix with cheese)
bake in oven until bubbling.

Leeks and sliced ham au gratin. Chop the leeks into pieces about four inches long, cook briefly in the microwave, then layer the ham on the base of the dish, top with leeks then finish with cheese sauce. Bake till golden.
You could make this more of a complete meal by topping with mashed potatoes before baking. You could use broccoli instead of leeks.

longtompot · 06/01/2025 22:38

You could use it as the protein in a ramen

Personally I'd slice it up and have it in sandwiches. Nothing beats a good ham, cheese and tomato sandwich with maybe some pickle or mustard

minipie · 06/01/2025 22:54

lentil/pearl barley casserole:

Fry some onion and diced root veg
Add lentils or pearl barley, stock, bay leaf
Simmer for 20 min
Stir in any quick cook veg like greens or peas, and chopped herbs, maybe a bit of grainy mustard
Stir in ham

Ny mum always served leftover ham at room temperature with potatoes au gratin and a crisp green salad with mustard dressing

BuzzieLittleBee · 07/01/2025 21:03

Thanks for all the suggestions. We had a delicious Nasi Goreng, and I've made pea soup with the stock the ham was cooked in. Plus a lump of ham has gone in the freezer for something else on another day. 4 meals (for 2) out of a £10 piece of ham is pretty good going!

We ate our leftover ham cold with chips and coleslaw!
