Passover starts next Sunday so I thought we could have a Jewish recipe as recipe of the week. I know little on the subject being an Irish lapsed Catholic so I thought I would ask here for ideas.
So if you have a fab gefilte fish recipe or matzo balls or just a great chicken soup recipe please post it here

thanks v much

I'm not Jewish but I have made lockshen pudding which was yummy, though couldn't ell you what the recipe was - which isn't much help...will look for mnetters recipes with interest (why the interest in Passover btw ?) As a teenager I longed to be Jewish - not sure why (lapsed Catholic too)

Carmenere · 13/04/2008 15:12

I just thought it might be a nice as a theme so-to-speak; it was that or low-fat for summer ect. And I like Jewish food in general too.

Anna8888 · 13/04/2008 19:25

Nigella Lawson has Jewish recipes in Feast.

TheFallenMadonna · 13/04/2008 19:25

Not Jewish, but a Claudia Roden devotee.

I shall dig out my favourites.

lulumama · 13/04/2008 19:35

have added two, i think i have done it right !

Carmenere · 13/04/2008 19:39

All ideas and contributions are welcome, even if they are Nigellas, as long as you can vouch for the success of the recipe, and as long as you enjoyed it, that is fine by me.

knpeppa · 13/04/2008 20:08

I'm not Jewish either but this soup was described as a Jewish soup in my recipe book and is absolutely delicious:

The lemon juice is essential to sharpen up the flavour and you really do need 8 cloves of garlic!

Potage of Lentils

2 sticks celery
1 onion
1 potato
2 carrots
2 tbsp olive oil
2 pints vegetable stock
8 0z red lentils
2 lemons, halved
2 bay leaves
8 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp tabasco

Chop celery, onion, carrots, garlic, peel and chop potato. Cook gently in olive oil without browning until softened.

Add hot stock, lentils, bay leaves, 1 lemon (halved). Bring to boil and simmer for 25-30 mins until soft.

Puree in a blender until smooth. Add remaining lemon juice, salt and pepper, tabasco and extra water to taste. Reheat and serve.

RubySlippers · 15/04/2008 09:23

i have added a couple of recipes and will do another one for a madeira cake later

Sugarmagnolia · 17/04/2008 17:13

Ahh, found it now, thanks RubySlippers.

Will post my grandma's potato kugel recipe when I get a chance. I also seem to have discovered a fab brisket recipe.

knpeppa - the soup recipe looks good but will have to wait until after Passover to try it as lentils are a no-no.

lulumama · 17/04/2008 17:13

oh, i love kugel!! there is a fab deli near my parents that does homemade kugel and cholent .. it is divine..

Sugarmagnolia · 17/04/2008 20:28

is matzoh meal gluten free?

Sugarmagnolia · 17/04/2008 21:06

Ok I have definitely done my bit for the Jewish recipes!

I have added:
Potato Kugel & Lamb Stew both for Passover
Carrot Kugel & Lockshen (Noodle) Kugel - not for Passover
And a 3 bean salad that isn't especially jewish but is dead easy and really yummy.

Carmenere · 17/04/2008 21:07

Thanks so much for the lovely recipes all of you, they sound delicious

Sugarmagnolia · 17/04/2008 21:14

The only problem with Nigella's recipes is that she tends to do stuff like use butter in her chicken soup!

Sugarmagnolia · 17/04/2008 21:15

Ok help, when I search for the recipes I just added I can only see 2 of the 5. Can other people see them?

Carmenere · 17/04/2008 21:15

Sugarmags you left out the method for the delicious-sounding carrot, would you mind jotting it down here and I will amend the recipe? Thanks a million

OP posts:
Carmenere · 17/04/2008 21:15

I see all 5
