Favourite lunch option on cafe menu?

As the title says really! Trying to get an idea of favourite lunch options on a cafe menu. My sister is opening a cafe in a popular market town and wants to offer a traditional but beautifully done menu so I'd love to know your favourite lunch options and anything you'd like to see more or less of. Thank you! X

I like a nice home made soup with a crusty roll. I once had a cauliflower cheese soup that was delicious, and I love a proper chicken broth.

Some decent gluten free options. Quiche, decent sandwich bread & a cake option.
Also GF vegetarian options rather than just vegan. I’m sick of having to have vegan because they don’t want to cater for veggies -I like cheese!

A club sandwich with chicken, bacon and egg mayo, maybe some avocado on it.

cheesy toast

Synergies · 04/05/2024 07:05

Tuna melt on proper bread

Lilly11a · 04/05/2024 07:06

I like an omelette chips and beans with fat coke. Nearly all my cafe trips are on a Sunday about 11.30 when I m hungover from the night before and it's brunch

Exactfare · 04/05/2024 07:08

Welsh rarebit

Avocado, poached egg, salad bits on good quality toast with a crunchy chilli topping dressing.

Egg mayonnaise sandwich with lots of pepper on wholemeal bread.

Good coffee ☕️

These are great suggestions! Thanks so much and keep them coming! X

Agree a good homemade soup with option to takeaway

Salad bar where you can pick your own ingredients, same for sandwich rather than a set menu for salads/sandwiches

Build your own breakfast rather than set meals

Sandwiches with option to add olive oil instead of butter and salt and pepper

Homemade healthy snacks - Flapjacks, energy balls, granola bars etc

At least a couple of options that aren't bread or pastry based. Most cafes only seem to have sandwiches, cakes and pastries. Soup that can come with salad rather than bread is an easy one.

Reasonable prices on a non pretentious menu in a cafe that doesn't have a stupid poncey name in an effort to sound more up market so they can charge more.

I'll go to Tracey's Cafe and have a £4.50 coronation chicken on a stotty that comes with a cup of tea.

I won't go to a place called Maison Dans Le Parc and buy a £15 poulet de couronnement on supposedly hand made bread which is served on a slate in a 'Build It Yourself' fashion.

I'm aware that's a me issue.. some people like all that shit and will pay three times as much to 'experience' being ripped off.

I would like: A salad that I don't need to remortgage my house for.

What I normally get: a fry up.

My other cafe choices: Jacket potato, cheese, beans.

Cheese burger and chips, but would like lunchtime sized, not a huge 15 quid thing.

The option for a smaller plate if I'm watching my food. Kids meals are perfect for lunch but lots of places don't let you order those as an adult.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 04/05/2024 07:21

Jacket potatoes with interesting fillings ( not beans/ cheese and tuna mayo). Decent interesting salads.

Ilovemyshed · 04/05/2024 07:21

Toasties : ham and cheese, brie and cranberry, cheese and onion.

Quiche

Soup and a crusty roll

Sausage roll

allthevitamins · 04/05/2024 07:21

You can't go wrong with a few good options really well done.

Breakfast: English muffins with various fillings
Panninis: tuna melt, mozzarella/tomato/basil
Baguettes: ham and cheese, egg mayo, Brie and grape
Homemade soup and crusty bread: House chicken broth plus a soup of the day
Jacket potatoes: various toppings
Option for a proper side salad with all of the above, otherwise just a minimal garnish will do
Posh crisps available
A salad meal: with avocado, seasoned chicken, salmon
Doorstep toast, toasted teacakes
Really good scones with jam and cream
Selection of two each of: homemade cakes/ traybakes/biscuits
Tea in pots with warmed cups, milk in a jug and extra hot water
Range of coffees
Selection of canned drinks
Help yourself to water

Also allow dogs in one area (with clear rules). One of our local cafes has started this, business is through the roof!

Doingmybest12 · 04/05/2024 07:24

Jacket potato cheese and home made coleslaw, I nearly always have this if available. Tea cakes and butter, cheese scones. Coffee and walnut cake, carrot cake.

UnpickThePockets · 04/05/2024 07:27

Eggs eggs eggs. Omelettes.

I low carb 90% of the time and it can be hard to get lunch that doesn’t include bread.

She needs a decent short order chef.

MississippiAF · 04/05/2024 07:28

Jacket potatoes that have been cooked in an oven/air fryer with crispy skin.

Not soggy microwave ones

Doingmybest12 · 04/05/2024 07:28

Pot of tea with enough water in for 2 cups, nothing makes a cafe look more stingy than half filling an already small tea pot.

Doingmybest12 · 04/05/2024 07:29

Quiche and salad

Duh · 04/05/2024 07:30

Non wanky food
Homemade soup
Quiche
Omelette
Jacket potatoes
Toasties
Bacon butties
Sandwiches
All day breakfast

Wanky but delicious food
Croque Monsieur
Omelette Arnold Bennett
Eggs Benedict
Smashed avocado on anything
All of the bread options from the ‘non wanky’ section but using sourdough

Shangrilalala · 04/05/2024 07:34

Eggs Benedict

Eggs Florentine

Thick good white toast with marmite (rarely find this and it’s my absolute favourite. I imagine the margin would be good too)

SquigglePigs · 04/05/2024 07:42

I'm not mad keen on sandwiches so am always after non-bread options. I also don't like having to pay £9 for a jacket potato with a huge salad on the side because I won't eat the salad.

Jacket potatoes - toppings don't need to be fancy but a nice homemade chilli is always welcome.

Omelettes.

Homemade soup. Offering a bowl of soup and "half" a sandwich is great!

DH's favourite is a good quiche, salad and coleslaw.

A "special" is good if you want people coming back regularly - a cottage pie, stew, pie, quiches etc.

Username917778 · 04/05/2024 07:43

Eggs florentine, I always order this when I see it on a menu

Lemonandlimez · 04/05/2024 07:46

I will always go for some kind of Goats cheese flatbread / Ciabatta. DH will always go for Brie and Cranberry.. basically lots of cheese options on the Menu! 😋
