I am looking to improve my toastie game and need ideas for accompaniments to the cheese, particularly chutneys/jams/sauces. Any recommendations? I do not eat poultry or pork so ham etc is out, but any other types of accompaniments also welcome!

Cheese and kimchi is good 😋

OldTinHat · 22/03/2024 13:25

Cheese and tuna.
Cheese, jam and banana.
Cheese and sweetcorn.
Cheese and apple.

I like to mix my cheeses. Cheddar and port salut is a WINNER of a combination. Sometimes I had slices of tomato and black pepper.

Cheese and onion was very popular when we were growing up. Never my favourite, but I understand the love and would happily eat it if handed to me.

Cheese and tuna?

Goats cheese, caramelised onion (or a caramelised onion chutney) is nice. Add rocket.

My local deli does a really nice cheese, spinach and chilli in a sort of toasted flatbread. I'm not sure what sort of cheese - I think it's a combination of feta and something oozy.

Damn it. Now I need a cheese toastie for lunch....

I make tuna mayo with gherkins, red onions and capers mixed in.

Sometimes use mozzarella, but use any cheese you like, it's good for using up leftover bits.

Bread is ciabatta or sliced sourdough ideally but also works with crappy white bread.

Or brie and cranberry or whatever you have - we got some fig and ginger of something else similarly random from Sainsburys at Christmas - that's nice with cheese.

Or the 'Indian Toastie'

But look at the menus of fancy cafes, delis etc. They all do toasties that they sell to you for ££££s and they're a piece of piss to make at home for a third of the price. Yeah yeah, eating in a cafe is an 'experience' so will cost more than doing it at home, but I can make a sandwich so I want the experience to include some effort, skill and more fancy ingredients than I have at home.

Thank you all, some great suggestions! Unfortunately I don't like tuna so that does make it more difficult.

Cheese, jam and banana is a new one on me!

Goats cheese and caramelised onion sounds amazing-that's on the list. And I do love brie and cranberry.

I've been enjoying cheddar and ajvar which is delicious but the jars don't last long once they're opened so I have to use them up quite quickly.

I might buy some onion chutney and some chilli jam as they'll work well.

MonsteraMama · 22/03/2024 14:24

I love cheddar and caramelised red onion chutney.

momager1 · 22/03/2024 14:43

my husband is so obsessed with toasties that I actually have a toasty machine . His favs.. ham cheese with a little sliced left over chicken, buttered with garlic butter (like a fake cordon bleu) Pepperoni cheese and a spoonful of pizza or marinara sauce, Peanut butter jam and banana slices with the outside with the butter having some cinnamon and sugar mixed in with the butter, left over mince carrot and onion, with a bit of HP sauce. He is a toastie monster lol

momager1 · 22/03/2024 14:47

Oh forgot the last one two days ago lol.. finely diced left over roast beef,, with mushrooms and onions. Served with a bowl of leftover gravy to dip. He had 4 of those.. and then he tells me he needs to lose weight LMAO... oh.. I sauteed the mushrooms and onions first in the saucepan.. raw would not be as nice

Goats cheese and beetroot

Ok that sounds amazing. Do you use pickled beetroot or just fresh?

Cindy1802 · 22/03/2024 14:51

Cheddar, cherry tomatoes and Balsamic glaze

Saucery · 22/03/2024 14:52

Strong cheddar and mango chutney.
Red Leicester and Longley Farm cottage cheese (has to be LF as all other cottage cheeses turn to pure liquid). Bit of chili jam too.
Brie and cranberry sauce.

momager1 · 22/03/2024 14:53

Now I want a toastie dinner Lol.. even though I have a chicken ready to go in the airfryer for tonight. It is only 10:52 am here so maybe a toastie lunch lol..off to raid the fridge to see what leftovers I can bung in a few for us

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 22/03/2024 14:53

Cheese, caramelised onions and chilli flakes

toastofthetown · 22/03/2024 14:54

Cheese and coriander chutney is so delicious. Coriander chutney is my favourite condiment - it's bright, and a bit spicy.
Cheese and the curried onions on this link. I find the onions take way longer to caramelise than the recipe says, but it's so delicious.
Cheese with crispy chilli oil.

I recommend buying a Crimpit so that you can have many more fillings that you can make.

WhamBamThankU · 22/03/2024 15:25

@momager1

Personally I use the soft goats cheese and pickled crinkle cut beetroot! Top tier combo

DarrylPhilbin · 22/03/2024 15:26

Cheddar and sautéed garlic mushrooms sounds like a good combo to try...
