Can anyone recommend or suggest a birthday cake recipe?

My DD grandparents splashed out on a local baker making a Bing cake last year and it wasn't actually that nice (although it did look very nice) but icing isn't something we want on it this year, I'm thinking maybe buttercream instead

I spent years pissing about with ready to roll icing in different colours and cutting to templates. (Which is how I know that an easy way to make grass involves pushing green ready to roll icing through a garlic press….). I now have two go-to options for mine as it’s what they request each year.

Vanilla sponge cake with buttercream icing - I use Nigella’s Victoria sponge recipe, usually doubled to make a traybake, Mary Berry’s buttercream, and decorate with sweeties spelling out their name and so on.

Nigella’s sour cream chocolate cake (old-fashioned chocolate cake), with sour cream chocolate icing, using Smarties to spell out name/age/decorate in colour-coordinated way.

These may not be the fanciest cakes but I promise you both taste amazing.

This was my son's third birthday cake - a round Vicky sponge iced with ready rolled fondant

This cake...

with this icing (I add a tbsp of icing sugar too) www.hummusapien.com/healthy-cream-cheese-frosting/

I appreciate the 'no sugar' and 'healthy' bits can be off putting, but I assure you it's delicious. I usually make DH a sugar filled nigella, chocolate Guinness cake for his birthday and last year he requested this instead. If that's not a seller idk what is. Unless you're not a fan of bananas!

I made this for my two for their first birthdays. It was a hit (no smashing involved just eating!).

I've just made this for my daughter's 3rd birthday! Thankfully she's too young to know she can ask for a certain cake and she loved the flowers, though I get it's not much of a kids cake (just what I wanted to do 🤣)
I'm not baker but the layers were simple, icing a bit tricky, whack the flowers on.
