Birthday cake for 3yo

Can anyone recommend or suggest a birthday cake recipe?

My DD grandparents splashed out on a local baker making a Bing cake last year and it wasn't actually that nice (although it did look very nice) but icing isn't something we want on it this year, I'm thinking maybe buttercream instead

Sorry can't help. Our birthday cakes usually have a name like Colin Wink

JamMakingWannaBe · 09/01/2024 22:18

Step 1: Go to Costco
Step 2: Choose cake
Step 3: Purchase cake
Step 4: Add a personalised cake topper / candles if required
Step 5: Take photo of said child with cake
Step 6: Eat cake

Have you made cakes before @RedRobyn2021? What skill level are you looking for?

moonlight1705 · 10/01/2024 09:15

I made this for my DDs 3rd birthday which was fairly easy to do. I did buy the figures from etsy as I'm not artistic at all.

Main cake was just three chocolate sponge cakes sandwiched together with buttercream.

That's a great cake @moonlight1705

My go to is a chocolate cake covered in buttercream and smarties. A bit like this but not as neat!

Costco cake is disgusting and very artificial tasting.

I made this for my niece's third birthday and it was surprisingly easy once I knew how. I used a small palette knife for the brown bit, and a nozzle specifically for "grass" for the green bit then just ordered the toppers. I did it all with buttercream and it was lovely.

For the recipe, I did a 9 egg method.

Basically 9 eggs, weigh them in their shells. Then use the same weight in butter, sugar and self raising flower.

Whisk the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add one egg at a time, and some vanilla essence. Then add the flower.

I split between 3 tins and baked on 160 for around 45-50 mins.

I made a unicorn cake for my DS's 3rd (at least I think it was his third)- you can get the toppers on Amazon etc as I wasn't up to fashioning a horn. I made three vanilla sponges- split the mixture into three bowls, added food colouring to two and marbled them together in the tins. Big hole in the bottom two filled with smarties which looked impressive when cut for very little effort.

I also fannied around with ombré icing but that was a faff and unnecessary (and took bloody ages).

I use this recipe and it comes out great every time. Pretty straightforward as everything pretty much gets mixed in all together.

A couple of cakes I've made recently that could fit your brief.

Big chocolate tray bake/sheet cake with rich buttercream on top and lots of sweets/decorations of choice or bought toppers.
Cuts nicely and it tastes delicious. Mary Berry does a nice one.
I have also done a big tray of cupcakes with whatever topper child is into you can get somd beautiful decorations to hype a home made cake. Easy to serve.
I think the very fancy tier cakes are often about the look and are not always tasty or easy to serve for parties.

This was easy . 3 sponges butter creamed together. Ready made fondant.. I'm much better at baking than decorating.
If all else fails good old Colin is always an hit.

Mine loved a lemon sponge cake with some buttercream that we then decorated together - a totally wild mix of smarties, haribos, rainbow strips, chocolate stick biscuits and I think skittles. It was super fun and very colourful and some 10 years later he still remembers and says that was the very best cake he ever had.

Thanks ☺️ the only trouble is she is getting older and asking for more and more difficult cakes. This year will be Spidey and His Amazing friends!

We always do this one - the ganache icing is super easy and dd loves to help (and lick).

It doesn't rise enough for me to make 3 layers though, but no one here cares about that.

When younger, we would decorate the cake with toppers bought online. Now, DD likes to decorate herself with a mix of sprinkles, smarties etc.

This looks lovely! Someone I follow on Instagram did something similar for her daughter

This cake...

with this icing (I add a tbsp of icing sugar too) www.hummusapien.com/healthy-cream-cheese-frosting/

I appreciate the 'no sugar' and 'healthy' bits can be off putting, but I assure you it's delicious. I usually make DH a sugar filled nigella, chocolate Guinness cake for his birthday and last year he requested this instead. If that's not a seller idk what is. Unless you're not a fan of bananas!
