Jack Monroe's festive nut roast

Have seen lots of recommendations for Jack Monroe's festive nut roast. Yet Googling only takes me to a snippet of the recipe or peopel's views on it.

Does anyone have the whole recipe and method?

This kicking is nothing, there are over 550 000 posts about her on a pretty nasty gossip forum!

Is that Tattle? I think they're mostly her own words. They're very good over there at pointing out discrepancies in her stories.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 17/12/2023 23:53

I learned about all the awful stuff she'd done on Tattle, it's all provable too.

She was so poor she was having to sell all her stuff including her kids toys and her family are foster carers??

Her dad has an MBE and was a firefighter for 30 years, and both parents are foster carers and very active in the community. It's been proven that the poverty claims were largely fictional.

But basically her recipes are total shite and I wouldn't want someone wasting good ingredients to make them.

That nut roast someone posted from Jack is the first recipe I’ve ever seen that could literally feed the five thousand as who would want any. Tattle varies a lot by thread, but the Monroe criticism is largely focussed on her soliciting donations from naive kind people to fund her lifestyle. And her cooking, which is a fair target.

Jack Monroe is a festive nut roast!!

Best post on the thread.

No idea about the nut roast but as so many people were criticising her recipes I just wanted to say that her bacon and brie risotto is amazing and it's ds1's absolute favourite food.

I used to make the JM nut roast a lot. It was essentially stuffing mix, soaked in fruit juice, with chopped mixed nuts and seasonings added.

Edited

That sounds completely revolting!

BlackCountryWench2 · 18/12/2023 05:12

Her case against Hopkins was six years ago.

cranleighma · 18/12/2023 05:35

She/he/they is/are a liar who's quite happy to cheat others out of money while pleading poverty herself. I feel sorry for her parents the way JM has completely rewritten her life story to make it seem she was deprived. Her family were very comfortable and JM was a privileged grammar school girl.

Didn't she buy a dozen sideboards with some of the money she scammed off people?

And her recipes are shit.

I don’t disagree with exposing scammers but the sheer number of tattle posts and the speed the threads on her fill up is unhinged. It’s an obsession for some of those posters.

Funnily enough people don't like scammers, especially when they take from people already struggling who think Jack was campaigning.

I was a big supporter of Jack but have seen the light and I'm angry that she conned me and others for so long.

That's why these threads fill up.

Chilicabbage · 18/12/2023 08:20

Someone posted her patreon payouts on twitter. Worth a look...

Scammer who can't cook.

Tombero · 18/12/2023 08:36

Not a nut roast but Delian’s parsnip roulade is delicious. I’m afraid I don’t know how to link but it’s on Delia online.

On the Jack Monroe front I found Tattles cookalong very insightful. I wouldn’t waste the ingredients myself. And as for her getting a hard time I consider it to be entirely self-inflicted.

Mufflette · 18/12/2023 08:46

I was just about to recommend the Cranks nut roast @Manzana has just posted! Really tasty.

RedRosie · 18/12/2023 08:59

Yes ... Back to the nut roasts.

Does anyone have a recipe for a nut roast that isn't full of breadcrumbs or rice or mushrooms? A properly nutty nut roast?

I’m not defending her. I’m just saying over 1000 posts over 3 days between maybe 20 users is obsessive.

The only thing lower than my opinion of JMs behavior is my opinion on her recipes. They're especially revolting given that they are explicitly aimed at people who can't afford to spend their limited funds on recipes which don't work.

However, I digress, this is the best ever nut roast recipe that our family still makes every year even though no-one is still vegetarian because it is completely delicious and also the leftovers make the best sandwiches. https://www.food.com/recipe/layered-cashew-and-mushroom-nut-roast-244571

Layered Cashew and Mushroom Nut Roast Recipe - Food.com

This recipe was given to our family about 20 years ago and it goes very well with the vegetarian gravy from recipe 243433. This recipe is an excellent

She also only won her court case on a technicality because Katie Hopkins had confused her with Laurie Penney.

CryptoFascist · 19/12/2023 08:14

If you want to see how her recipes usually turn out, you should read the Slopalong. Tattle posters tested her recipes following the ingredients and methods to the letter.
People who use her recipes in the wild tend to tweak them to make them work.

Also she's a con artist and the Patreon figures are the tip of the iceberg, don't forget the Paypal begs, kickstarter where she didn't send out the books, her lucrative public speaking gigs talking about her fictional backstory. We'll never know the full extent of the grift.

Her chickpea and peach curry thing was a staple for us for years, to be fair.

Really?
did you add extra ingredients to improve the flavour at all? This isn't a curry...

250g canned chickpeas (drained weight)
1 onion
1 fat clove of garlic
1 chilli
a splash of oil
1 rounded tsp cumin (ground or seeds)
1 x 400g tin of peaches (or apricots or mandarins)
1 x 400f carton or tin of chopped tomatoes
a handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped
1 stock cube, veg or chicken

No it can’t fairly be called a curry. But at the time we were living without regular access to shops so storecupboard recipes like this were essential.

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 19/12/2023 11:48

With those ingredients I would have added lentils and made a soup and eaten the tinned peaches separately. Tastier and more filling than calling that a curry! However each to their own.
