Jacket potato party.

DSD has requested jacket potatos for her party food as they are her favourite and I'm happy to do this. No dietary requirements 20-25 guests.

How many potatoes would you do? I was thinking 60 but my OH says that's too many and I am very much a feeder 😅.

Toppings wise I have planned-
Chilli con carne
Tuna mayo and sweet corn
Baked beans.
Chicken curry. Probably a tikka/korma style one.

There will also be big bowls of coleslaw, salad, grated cheese, garlic bread, sausage rolls and dips etc. Does this sound OK or should I have another filling?

Is there anything else you would add? I'll have rolls etc in for anyone who doesn't like potato and lots of sweet treats for afters.

How will you cook 60 (or even 30) jacket potatoes ? Genuine question.

Sounds great, I would definitely come.

SM4713 · 31/10/2023 18:35

Are they children or adults attending the party? It depends how big the potatoes are. If smaller then 2 each would be fine for me, but if large, 1 would be enough with the other sides and dessert.

I love chopped spring onions on top, pineapple and ham or cooked bacon, but you do have plenty of toppings already.

DragonFly98 · 31/10/2023 18:49

25 pototoes if that's the maximum number of guests , surely that's obvious.

LegendsBeyond · 31/10/2023 18:55

I would do 2 potatoes per guest, as they can be quite small. A lovely idea. I hope your DSD enjoys it.

shatteredL · 31/10/2023 18:56

That sounds so good - I want a jacket potato now 🤣

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 31/10/2023 18:56

How are you going to cook them all??

I think it's a impossible to give a number of potatoes as they vary massively in size, even if you buy baking potatoes. How many of the guests are children?
I doubt anyone will eat more than one decent sized (and that's age dependent) potato loaded with toppings. But if they're small, then more. If I had proper sized ones I'd maybe do 30 to be safe.

Jojobees · 31/10/2023 19:00

I’d do 50, they can be quite small if you are buying bags of them.
3 bean chilli for any veggies. Sounds delicious.

OldTinHat · 31/10/2023 19:00

30 potatoes
Veggie bean chilli
Cheese
Salad
Tuna mayo
Coleslaw

I'm catering for the same number and did last year too. That list worked for me before and it was a help yourself effort. There were leftovers.

ReviewingTheSituation · 31/10/2023 19:01

1 proper jacket-sized potato each (much easier to cook/manage than more smaller pots). Any normal size oven would fit 30 potatoes in - 3 shelves, 10 per shelf, no problem.

Your toppings sound lovely. I don't think you need sausage rolls (or garlic bread, but that might be more controversial). Not sure you need both chilli and curry either. Agree with a PP that a couple more cold ones might be handy - chopped ham, pineapple, maybe some cream cheese? I'd keep the sweetcorn separate from the tuna.

Shortpoet · 31/10/2023 19:02

I remember going to a bonfire party years ago and the mum had batch cooked the jackets in the oven, then wrapped the cooked jackets in a space blanket, then wrapped that in a duvet to keep them warm, while the next batch was cooked in the oven.
Could work.
Maybe do a mini- trial run!

If you are doing big potatoes (the size you tend to get in cafes etc) is be surprised if many people could eat more than one. If they are smaller I'd possible doing a few more. You could always offer up an option of half or whole when people start going for seconds.
Toppings sound great but I'm not sure where sausage rolls fit with jacket potato's.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 31/10/2023 19:15

Also make either the chilli or the curry veggie.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 31/10/2023 19:15

Sounds yummy what a lovely idea x

ABeautifulThing · 31/10/2023 19:18

Sounds great. I did exactly this for my DD 6th birthday.
Your toppings are good, no need for more options.
One big spud each is what you want. Hungry people will take a whole one, people with smaller appetites a half, leaving a few spare for seconds.
Enjoy.
I got SO many compliments for best party food ever after mine. 😁

HappiDaze · 31/10/2023 19:21

One potato per person is the norm if you're in the UK not so sure if you're elsewhere as portions might be supersize.

You'd put a couple of toppings on around your potato.

And cake for dessert

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 31/10/2023 19:25

I would say one is definitely enough given all the garlic bread, sausage rolls etc.

At a max 1.5x people and even then I think it's excessive.

Inextremis · 31/10/2023 19:28

Could you add some sour cream and chives? It's my favourite jacket topping (not that I'll be there, sadly!).

lilyblue5 · 31/10/2023 19:28

This sounds insane!!! I want to come 🤣
really fancy a JP now too, dammit!!!

MuchTooTired · 31/10/2023 19:31

This sounds amazing!! I’d do max 1.5 potatoes per person, but I’m a feeder too and would rather over cater than under.

BigBoysDontCry · 31/10/2023 19:32

I'd do around 40/45 but I'd cut a dozen or so in half so that people could have 1 and a half if the didn't want 2

Almahart · 31/10/2023 19:34

Sounds dreamy, honestly one of my favourite foods

Laska2Meryls · 31/10/2023 19:39

Cottage cheese Spring onion and mango chutney.. ( call me weird but its the best.... unless its strong cheddar, spring onions and branston , which is also the best) .. with coleslaw....😋

sexnotgenders · 31/10/2023 19:39

Sounds epic! Can I come? (that's as long as the insane people on here talking about adding in pineapple aren't also invited 😆)

Laska2Meryls · 31/10/2023 19:41

Obvs both with butter and black pepper on before the above toppings...

I do this for 25-30 when we go with school.

We allow one per person (teens) and do about 10 Extra. A large jacket potato is 220g so

220x35= 7.7kg

The bags of baking potatoes from Asda are 2.5kg and we use those so I'd get three bags.

We have tuna beans cheese coleslaw and then plain salad oh and butter and it's always a a massive hit with plates licked clean!

We do them for four hours on low. Will they fit in your oven?
