Drinks I can buy while out/at the pub that contains sugar?

No sweetners and not water

I'm finding the list frighteningly low

I think I am reliably down to a 'cup of tea' or coke from a bottle or tin

Anyone found anything good?

If they have them, I tend to drink Fever Tree drinks. You’d have to check individual products but I think most of the regular versions use sugar.

Mummy08m · 09/08/2023 09:38

Juice, surely

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 09/08/2023 09:39

Fruit juice?

Bottle green drinks do I think. Their squash certainly has sugar in.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 09/08/2023 09:50

I'm surprised.
As I T1 diabetic I need sugar free soft drinks/ mixers and 9 times out of ten there is only a choice of Diet Coke or tonic (not a given)
I Always see fruit juices/non alcoholic cocktails/lemonade/j2o/Britvic lemon/orange etc
Even Fever tree low tonic still has 7g carb in it and everywhere seems to have ditched britvic or Schweppes

Fantina · 09/08/2023 09:52

I have Coke but only from a can or bottle because I don’t like draught coke. The juices are most often from concentrate which I don’t want.

But all those things you mention have artificial sweeteners in, which is what the OP wants to avoid.

OP, I agree that it is far more difficult than it should be. Sometimes, I get alcohol free lager, or fresh orange juice and soda.

But even that's not easy to get it right and you have to watch them like a hawk to avoid it going like this:

'fresh orange juice and soda please'. No, not lemonade, soda. Watches bar person start to open a bottle of cordial, 'excuse me, FRESH orange juice and soda, please, not that'.

Or the time it was table service, and I had to send back two cordial drinks despite the second time pointing at the drinks menu where it said pure orange juice and said 'I'll have orange juice and soda please'

When I rule the world, anyone who serves cordial went asked for juice, or lies about spread being butter is going straight to hell.

I’ve had to cross so many things off my list because I really don’t like sweeteners and the effect they have on me. San pelligrino does both their lemon and orange in ‘original Italian flavour’ which has sugar and no sweeteners (although not always east to find), and appletise is a really good staple. I was very disappointed when Fentiman started using sweeteners - they were favourites and are now undrinkable for me. Fevertree still has sugar.

KnickerlessParsons · 09/08/2023 10:39

It's because of the sugar tax.

OP, is it that you want to avoid sweeteners? Or don you actively need the sugar?

In the latter case, I'd take sachets of sugar and add them yourself. Or buy alcohol as that contains sugar.

If it's avoiding sweeteners that you're after, then that'll be difficult. Lots of drinks contain both.

KatyMac · 09/08/2023 10:46

I have to avoid sweetners and I need sugar

@BarbaraofSeville totally and the glass of coke from the squirty machine when you asked for a can or bottle!! Sure way to be ill for days

I cant drink alcohol or citrus either so my drink options are reducing!

I know its the sugar tax but the alcohol and tobacco tax dont stop you buying them - so why the sugar tax = no sugar

Can you still get appletiser? Is sparkling apple.juice

I think one of the trains is that people are less put off by price increases to alcohol (and tobacco) than they are to any other food (and drink). So this is why we see sweeteners in more soft drinks, 'shrinkflation' of packaged food - anything to avoid putting the price up.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 09/08/2023 11:18

@BarbaraofSeville
I know, that's why I said I'm surprised as I find it limited the other way round.
Plenty of pubs round here have fresh juice etc and not much in the way of sugar free.

User63847484848 · 09/08/2023 11:20

Cordial surely?
lime and soda or blackcurrant and soda.
J20 fruit juice

BarbaraofSeville · 09/08/2023 11:23

They all have sweeteners in @User63847484848

Probably at least 90% of soft drinks in pubs and supermarkets have artificial sweeteners in. They all taste disgusting and make many people ill.

KatyMac · 09/08/2023 11:30

Yes I play this game occasionally when something I buy regularly changes its recipe

It involves me sitting on the floor looking through the contents of my bin reading labels while.saying what the fuck have they put sweetners in this time- crisps, yogurt are now on the "buy nothing without reading the label" list but I've also found it in cereal, chocolate, burgers/sausages (!) & pastry goods

Wow didn’t know that, thought the old cordial was still the original syrupy stuff

Dinopawus · 09/08/2023 14:29

I drink lime and soda. Roses lime cordial, which is often sold in pubs doesn't appear to have sweetener in although it does contain preservatives and colours.

(As diluted):, Water, Lime Juice from Concentrate (5%), Sugar, Acid (Citric Acid), Flavourings, Preservative (Sodium Metabisulphite), Colours (Carotenes, Green S)

the britvic one has aspartame in though.

Clefable · 09/08/2023 14:33

It's getting harder and harder to find drinks without foul-tasting artificial sweeteners in. Even Pepsi's original now has sweeteners in, so it's just Coke now that has no artificial sweeteners. Fresh fruit juice is an option, but pretty much every mixer for it has sweeteners. Cordial/squash almost all is artifical sweeteners (Asda do their own high juice that uses sugar, but not much use for being at the pub). It's rotten.

Idontpostmuch · 09/08/2023 17:31

I think it's just coke now. Even fruit juices often have artificial sweeteners. It's really annoying that many drinks that used to be good have been ruined by the addition of artificial sweeteners - fanta, san pellegrino etc, now only worth drinking in mainland Europe. Also, Irn Bru is now disgusting - pathetic to tamper with Scotland's national drink. I've once been in a restaurant, and once in a pub which didn't even have original coke, and both spun me stupid stories about healthy drinks - as if chemical laden drinks are healthy! I was driving so couldn't even have a glass of wine. Was stuck with fizzy water. I'm slim and hate diet drinks, and resent the sugat tax which has been imposed because Boris Johnson is fat and can't discipline his calory intake.

KatyMac · 09/08/2023 23:46

I cant help but feel is no more harmful than tobacco or alcohol

God I wish I drank! Or didn't have intolerances!

OP posts:
calmcoco · 09/08/2023 23:48

I drink Appletiser as no sweeteners.

Demelzat · 10/08/2023 01:16

Yes to Appetiser - it tastes fab and no artificial crap. We buy it by the gallon!

BarbaraofSeville · 10/08/2023 06:15

Thanks for the Appletiser suggestion, I think I've missed that one.

But in my experience, most pubs use Schweppes or Britvic cordial which has sweeteners.

HoppingPavlova · 10/08/2023 06:19

If it’s that much of a drama just get water and add your own sugar packets?

Clefable · 10/08/2023 09:03

The original recipe Irn Bru is full sugar, the one in the glass bottles. I was gutted when they ruined standard Bru!
