Hi all,

Vegetarian here looking for a decent Indian dish from our local takeaway. What does paneer actually taste like?

Thanks Smile

I think like tofu and feta a mix between the two

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/07/2023 18:09

Like not very nice cheese.

Saag Aloo is your friend.

Hazelnuttella · 22/07/2023 18:12

Similar in taste to fresh buffalo mozzarella but with a texture more like halloumi.

It doesn’t taste “cheesy” if that’s the concern, it doesn’t have much of a taste, just absorbs the other flavours.

I love paneer! It's a very mild flavour, a bit like cottage cheese (but more like tofu in texture).

Our local does hakka chilli paneer and it's lovely. Fairly easy to make at home too.

Mylefttoe · 22/07/2023 18:30

Delicious.
Really tasty fried and added to a spinach based curry. 😋

YallaYallaaa · 22/07/2023 18:38

Not much. It tastes of whatever sauce you put it in.

I love it!

khakitrousers · 22/07/2023 18:38

Love paneer - it's got quite a firm texture, not dissimilar to tofu/ halloumi but is much milder and creamier.

anywherebutthere · 22/07/2023 18:39

It's yummy. Saag paneer is the best.
It's mild and halloumi type texture.

TropicalTrama · 22/07/2023 18:40

A cross between halloumi and fried tofu, doesn’t have a great deal of taste on its own but is delicious in the right sauce.

bryceQ · 22/07/2023 18:40

It's just mild and takes on the taste of what it's paired with like tofu. I like it

katem98 · 22/07/2023 18:40

@rainingoutsideagain Love tofu hate feta Grin haha

Same as my DH. If it helps he loves paneer!

khakitrousers · 22/07/2023 18:41

I don't think it tastes anything like feta - it hasn't got that sharp taste at all.

katem98 · 22/07/2023 18:41

Thanks all! Going to try it this eve I think. Not much to lose. Love halloumi/ tofu but really not keen on cottage cheese/ feta so we shall see!

I only opened this as I read the title as ‘what does your partner taste like.’

katem98 · 22/07/2023 18:42

@Windercar 🤣🤣🤣 probably a much more entertaining thread than this one! Haha

It mostly absorbs flavours - it’s a bit like v mild cottage cheese in taste, but slightly less stiff halloumi in texture. I love a good saag paneer..

Chenford · 22/07/2023 18:44

I’m a vegetarian who loves a curry.

Tried paneer (Rogan Josh) with trepidation once.

Reader, I married it. Or would have done, if I could.

Have it every time now.

let us know what you think…

Loveys · 22/07/2023 18:48

Squeaky cheese! Love it

caffelattetogo · 22/07/2023 18:53

Like a cross between halloumi and tofu. I love it. Let us know what you think.

PortLouisLouis · 22/07/2023 18:54

Texture can vary from quite soft like a firm tofu to halloumi-like. Both are nice, and takeaways pretty much always have the latter type. Taste is very mildly milky. It’s a great foil for curry sauces.

My local takeaway does paneer passanda, which is ridiculously good. They used to do it with giant 1” paneer cubes, which somehow made them even more amazing, but sadly there was a change of chef.

Screamingabdabz · 22/07/2023 18:56

It’s nothing like feta unless you’re talking about cubes! It’s like a mild halloumi and is delicious in a curry.

katem98 · 22/07/2023 18:59

Thanks all! Will let you know of the verdict. I'm going to go for a Paneer Makhanwala, it sounds quite tasty Smile

It gives that added texture and creaminess. We also have it in wraps, fajita style. But there’s no point sneaking a bite from the fridge, like tofu, it will taste of nothing.

CurlewKate · 22/07/2023 19:22

Aloo Ghobi is delicious!
