Has there ever been own brand treacle? My mum was a great one for own brands, but we only ever had lyles.

AndTheSurveySays · 02/06/2023 17:43

Silverspoon brand sells treacle

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/06/2023 17:49

Is there a difference between treacle and molasses?

I am making gingerbread soon and just checked my supplies. The beautiful red and gold tin of Lyle's treacle is sitting on my worktop alongside the equally beautiful green and gold Tate & Lyle golden syrup tin.

CurlewKate · 02/06/2023 17:54

Remember to use the tins as pen/utensil/cutlery holders....

HappiDaze · 02/06/2023 18:24

Tesco sells their own brand treacle

I would only ever use Lyles though but I suppose I might not matter if you're baking with it

It's not on there now but I looked for treacle only the other day and they had their own brand in a squeezy bottle.

They don't even have Lyles golden treacle on there at the moment. Only black treacle. So I guess they just don't have any at the moment but keep trying

HappiDaze · 02/06/2023 18:57

Sorry my mistake Yes they do have it under golden syrup not treacle.

Treacle
HappiDaze · 02/06/2023 18:59

They have Lyles too

HappiDaze · 02/06/2023 19:01

It's only Lyles that makes black treacle though if your after treacle molasses

They are totally different aren't they? I'm glad you said that, I thought it was just me.

Off topic, but intrigued as to what else you would do with treacle that didn't involve baking? I'm very prepared to look like a fool when a million suggestions roll in but for the life of me I can't think of any Blush

Datafan55 · 02/06/2023 19:03

Sainsburys definitely do Golden Syrup (although it does not taste as good as Lyle's)

ladydiggins · 02/06/2023 19:10

I know that treacle tart is really golden syrup tart of course - but treacle to me is the black stuff in a red tin (invariably Tate & Lyle brand in our cupboard when I was a child in the 1970s.)

Black treacle was used in the Christmas Cake and to make bonfire/treacle toffee, and for the rest of the time just sat there stickily in the 'baking stuff' cupboard. (Although IIRC we also went through a phase of making a treacly drink which was a blob of treacle in a mug topped up with freshly boiled water - thankfully a very short-lived fad.)

Golden syrup (Tate & Lyle again, but in the green tin) was used far more frequently in sponge puddings and other things.

You dip a spoon in it and eat it off the spoon.... Or is that just me? 😳

You can use treacle as part of a substitute for balsamic vinegar in cooking. Which itself is a substitute for red wine. I'm a disorganised cook!

TheFlis12345 · 02/06/2023 19:16

You can also use treacle to glaze a ham!

Augend23 · 02/06/2023 19:17

I like golden syrup drizzled over ice-cream, it goes sort of hard and is jolly tasty.

I'd definitely assume someone mean black treacle if they said treacle to me.

ladydiggins · 02/06/2023 19:18

Non-baking stuff like cornflake/rice krispie cakes and maybe drizzled on pancakes. Oh and also on porridge.

Other than those...not much

whoami24601 · 02/06/2023 19:18

See!

Treacle

They sounds like vehicles for golden syrup rather than treacle though.

ladydiggins · 02/06/2023 19:43

Of course - I'm getting muddled up. Doh
