There is technically a difference between black treacle and molasses, but it's a bit academic and I don't remember the details now.

Nor can I, but I think they are more or less interchangeable in recipes such as fruit cakes. In lockdown, I could only get molasses and used it to turn granulated sugar into brown sugar. I used it up in cakes and couldn't tell the difference. I think treacle is cheaper ... I'm guessing because that's what I have in my cupboard now.

Golden syrup - I can't tell difference between Tesco and Lyles. And, as pp said, it's very good on vanilla ice cream with clotted cream on top.

The last treacle I had (a couple of years ago) was from Marks and Spencer:

Drizzle black treacle on porridge, yum

Bumblebee2022 · 02/06/2023 23:27

Does black treacle still have a ‘dispose of by’ date? Does anyone know why? Nothing else has a dispose of date. As I remember, time wise I can get two Christmas cakes out of one tin, but then end up throwing out the rest. I don’t normally worry too much about best before/use by dates, but a dispose of date seems a bit more important.

CurlewKate · 03/06/2023 06:03

A blob of treacle in a spicy marinade for chicken is excellent.

Incidentally- the next thread to this on my feed is "Name for a daughter" A but Eastenders, I suppose, but I've heard worse..,,

JulesJules · 03/06/2023 06:23

One of my friends at school was Welsh and she always called golden syrup treacle, pronounced 'tree-acle' - Welsh for golden syrup is 'triagle'.

I love those gold and red tins from Tate and Lyle, I've only seen own brand treacle at M&S like a pp.

Apart from gingerbread, Xmas cake and to glaze ham, the only other thing I've used treacle for is in a bread recipe in my bread maker, for a multiseeded loaf.

Rapidtango · 03/06/2023 06:29

Is 'treacle' starting to sound a bit odd to anyone else now Grin?

I use it in a marinade for belly pork with chilli, soy, ginger, garlic, sesame oil. Slow cook then use to fill bao buns.

I think it’s because it produces some kind of gas that blows the tin up. Not blows up as in an explosion, 😁 more of an inflation but I suppose it could go bang if you leave it long enough.

That sounds mad written down, but I’m sure I’ve had tins that have inflated a bit.

I don’t chuck it away though!

black treacle toffee is fun. We used to call it bonfire toffee. Sets like a rock and tastes like Halloween.

TheSandgroper · 03/06/2023 12:36

My understanding is that in processing cane sugar it goes
molasses
treacle
golden syrup
glucose syrup
sugar that we use.

I used to use molasses for the horses dinner. Yum. I use treacle in my ginger cake. Also yum. I have an egg free chocolate cake using golden syrup. Also yum.

Colourgreen · 03/06/2023 13:39

Ooh, could you share the egg free cake recipe please, Sandgroper?

You dip a spoon in it and eat it off the spoon.... Or is that just me? 😳

DP eats it off the spoon too

So by treacle I meant the black treacle , Golden syrup is a different product
I use treacle in the slow cooker on ham
in baking, a proper treacle tart is amazing, as is treacle scones
in bread making its good to give wholemeal and grain bread a bit of oomph

@Colourgreen

Treacle
TheSandgroper · 04/06/2023 11:47

@Colourgreen I have never added the cinnamon so don’t know what that tastes like. I have added hazelnut meal, reducing the flour a bit, which is divine.

I make it gf, df using rice milk. It took me trial and error but I have adapted the recipe to suit me. I have passed the recipe to someone a number of years ago and I believe she is very happy with it.

Colourgreen · 04/06/2023 16:35

Oh thank you so much, TheSandgroper- that looks superb! I'm trying to find ways to reduce using expensive eggs, so I'll try it out. 🌷

  1. curious as to why the OP is concerned about Tate & Lyle being the only treacle brand available? I've never noticed an own-brand but I'm in the once every five couple of years purchaser category!

  2. has anyone used it in caramelised red onion chutney instead of sugar?

Because its £1.75 a tin now and I wanted to see if there was a own brand which was cheaper but couldnt find one

My kids used to love it drizzled off a spoon if they had pancakes.

If you hold it up slightly tilted, you can get it over the pancake in needle width drizzles.

Now Ive got a taste for a lovely treacle soda- made with black treacle of course.

IRISH TREACLE SODA BREAD

1 1/2 lbs. (6 c.) plain flour
1/2 pt. (1 c.) buttermilk, sour milk or fresh milk with 1 tsp. cream of tartar added to dry ingredients
2 tbsp. black treacle (molasses)
1 tsp. bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tbsp. sugar

Mix all dry ingredients together in a basin and make well in the center. Heat treacle with milk. Add enough milk mixture to make a thick dough. Stir with a wooden spoon; the pouring should be done in large quantities, not by spoonfuls. The mixture should be slack but not wet, mixing lightly and quickly. Add small amount of milk if dough seems too stiff.

With floured hands, put dough on lightly floured board or table. Flatten into a circle about 1 1/2 inches thick. Place on a baking sheet and make large cross over it with floured knife. (This is to ensure even distribution of heat.)

Bake in moderate to hot oven (375 to 400 degrees electric; gas regulo 5) for about 40 minutes. Test the center with skewer before removing from oven. To keep bread soft, wrap in a clean tea towel. Makes 2 small or 1 large loaf.

Ahhhhhbisto · 11/06/2023 18:13

M&s definately do own brand treacle.
