How long would this food prep take you?

I have a disability and saw a recipe for ratatouille and time prep as 5mins. It would take me much longer but wondered how realistic for able bodied - how long you think it would take you -

dice one onion (ingredient. This just says onion, so not sure about peeling in the 5 mins)
, finely slice six garlic cloves (ingredients, list states peeled, so presumably not included in the five minutes),
half a courgette, and an aubergine and chopped into 2 to 3 cm pieces, halve a red pepper, length wise, remove the seeds and dice, about 2 cm.
Chop four large tomatoes into large chunks.

Less than 5 minutes

FluttiTutti · 21/05/2023 15:18

5 minutes sounds about right

SmashingOwl · 21/05/2023 15:19

5 minutes give or take but if you have a disability then it stands to reason that this is going to take you longer - depending on what your disability is

watcherintherye · 21/05/2023 15:20

I reckon all that, including washing and peeling, would take me 10-15 mins.

lucysnowe2 · 21/05/2023 15:20

Definitely more than 5 mins for me, and I thought I was quick!

I reckon all that, including washing and peeling, would take me 10-15 mins.

That would be at a normal pace, not a Masterchef pace, btw!

Coffeaddict · 21/05/2023 15:24

I would say between 5 and 10 minutes

Pestispeeved · 21/05/2023 15:33

Frozen onion, garlic and pepper would help you out. Frozen courgette and aubergine don't work, too watery.

I could do it in 5 mins, I have a big knife and use it lots. I try not to grumble at kitchen helpers but good grief they are slow.

olympicsrock · 21/05/2023 15:35

I wouldn’t wash any of these vegetables . The only peeling would be the onion.
I reckon 5 minutes

maddiemookins16mum · 21/05/2023 15:38

It would take me longer than 5 mins for sure.

ZillionDayStreak · 21/05/2023 15:39

10-15 minutes, including assembling all the ingredients from various places, getting the chopping board and knife and food waste bin, doing the chopping and then tidying it all up and wiping the side afterwards.

Actual chopping veg 5-7 minutes.

Fudgewomble · 21/05/2023 15:39

I’m able bodied - 5 mins. I also have a good Global brand knife. Having said that I am able bodied, I do have high Rh factors and don’t like chopping for too long as my hands get a bit cranky, hence the very good super sharp knife. I don’t chop vege in holiday lets with blunt knives!

Gettingbysomehow · 21/05/2023 15:42

Does it matter how long it takes? I have a health condition that is fine one day, flares up the day after. Things take as long as they take.

PhoenixArisen · 21/05/2023 15:42

To chop it up, a bit more than 5 mins. Maybe 7 mins but a bit extra to retrieve ingredients, unwrap wash it, get your knives and chopping board out and so on.

GoodVibesHere · 21/05/2023 15:44

Missing the point here but SIX garlic cloves?! Wow that's a lot, I use oone or two in my ratatouille, and I love garlic.

Anyway, I'd say around 5 mins for me to prep the stuff you've listed.

NoSquirrels · 21/05/2023 15:44

Yes, 5-10 minutes tops. The onion is the only time-consuming part, really (and even then not so much.)

Frozen chopped onion or onion/carrot/celery mix is an excellent thing, btw.

Comedycook · 21/05/2023 15:45

I'd do it in five minutes but I'm pretty speedy and if it told me to cut into 2cm chunks...I wouldn't be particularly precise.

DRS1970 · 21/05/2023 15:46

It would definitely take me longer than 5 minutes. I would say 10-15 minutes for me.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 21/05/2023 15:46

I am a slow cooker, no disabilities. It would take me at least 10 minutes.

OldTinHat · 21/05/2023 15:47

10 to 15 mins I reckon. I love ratatouille but hate making it because the prep seems to take forever.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 21/05/2023 15:48

😂meant to say I am a slow cook.
I faff around and take ages.

Fairislefandango · 21/05/2023 15:50

A bit less than 5 mins probably, including peeling onion and garlic.

Augend23 · 21/05/2023 15:51

10 ish minutes I reckon? I have a sharp knife etc I'm just liable to cut my own fingers off if I hurry.

tupperwaretowers · 21/05/2023 15:51

5 mins to chop plus whatever time it takes the sous chef to prep everything for chopping and clean up! The beauty of ratatouille is its rusticness, it’s very forgiving and the more garlic the better for me.

Ladysaurus · 21/05/2023 16:09

10-15 minutes. I'm not a fast chopper.

I'm wondering OP whether a food processor may be something that would help you with meal prep if you find chopping a challenge? I know it's on my wish list when I have some spare pennies. I've seen one that spirilizes too. 😁
