Awful meals your parents made as a child - lighthearted

I remember my mum used to put half a tomato on any meal that didn’t have veg, I hated it, still do.

Bread and butter pudding made with skimmed powdered milk, absolutely disgusting!!

Tuna sandwiches in my packed lunch that had not been drained properly, so all the bread was wet and soggy - everyday!

Do you have any to share

Mother used to tell us it was sausage and chips for tea like she was giving us a treat. It definitely wasn’t. We used to cry.
The chips were homemade, weirdly both undercooked and burned at the same time and always soggy. The sausage were from our village butcher and were horrible beyond belief with massive lumps of gristle.
This was in the 1970’s. I still can’t eat sausage.

Dm was a good cook but she used to make neck of lamb stew with the bones left in and I hated it. I've not eaten lamb since I left home.

Stuffed hearts

Those suspiciously rectangular pieces of fish that came boil-in-the-bag in a horrid white parsley sauce.

Urgh, turns my stomach even now just thinking of them. Put me off fish for years.

Oh god we used to have that too 🤮

daretodenim · 01/04/2023 21:09

Nut roast.

GeorgeA12 · 01/04/2023 21:16

When my mum was pregnant with my brother, I asked my dad what was for tea and he looked in the fridge and said do you want a pork crackling and cheese sandwich. I thought he was amazing coming up with that concoction.

It's only now years later and as a parent I realised that he couldn't have been bothered and organised and that was all that was left in the fridge 😂.

Findis frozen French bread pizzas
Thick thick bread that shattered with every bite like eating dry Weetabix
The faintest smearing of tomato and a shaving of cheese.
Totally tasteless
She thought I loved them and I really fucking didn't.

I also love salad cream. One of my favourite sandwiches is white sliced bread, Cheddar, tomatoes to make it all go soggy, and salad cream. Mmmmm.

Yes love that and salad cream on salad.

We had frozen oven chips on 95% of our dinners. Sometimes the chips would taste and smell very off. I knew as soon as they were being taken out of the bag that it was a bad batch- tasted almost like manure!

Chili Con Carne - fried mince with 4 cans of bbq baked beans mixed in.

My gran used to make banana sandwiches (mashed into the bread) then dipped in a cup of tea.

Bacon & cabbage 'roast' with boiled potatoes.

Sausages that were sliced down the middle and flattened, then incinerated in the grill until they were black on both sides

Baked beans and tinned tomatoes mixed together on toast with lashings of white pepper.

Kidneys
Liver
Crème Caramel (from a packet)
Home made fudge using condensed milk

YukoandHiro · 01/04/2023 21:22

I'm the only child who loves liver and bacon with mash! I could murder a plate of that now.

YukoandHiro · 01/04/2023 21:22

Boil in the bag fish with this weird parsley sauce

sarahh96 · 01/04/2023 21:24

Findus crispy pancakes Envy

I grew up on findus crispy pancakes, you can still buy them in Iceland! 😉

Our food was very plain, but my mum did a good job. It was never over cooked, always consistently edible. Just not very exciting. But during the summer we had salad every week. A whole tomato, a chunk of cucumber, a couple of uncut scallions, a lettuce leaf and some sort of protein like cooked ham or tuna or corned beef. All just dumped on the plate. It really was very disappointing! Sometimes there was beetroot to jazz it up a bit😆

OMG - the salad! Exactly the same! My mum would occasionally liven up ours with tinned potato salad.

Rockgirl84 · 01/04/2023 21:29

My worst meals were....
Brain's faggotts
Liver n onions
Cambells tinned meatballs
Overcooked pork chops dry as hell
Jam on digestive biscuits
Sandwich spread sandwiches with mouldy bread

Rayn22 · 01/04/2023 21:32

Tongue sandwiches!! 🤮

Ilovepugs2017 · 01/04/2023 21:43

Omg I thought I ate some awful food growing up but apparently not after reading some of these responses - yuck 🤮

RoobarbandCustud · 01/04/2023 22:17

@Knullrufs your story has made me cry.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/04/2023 22:34

Watery tomatoey sausage casserole without browning the sausages first so the skins sort of 'rolled back.

My dbro used to call it 'willy stew' 🤣

Warriormum1 · 01/04/2023 22:38

bellac11 · 01/04/2023 17:38

Liver and bacon

I cannot abide offal, hate the texture and taste and she would insist that she had cooked it 'nicely' so I should like it

Bleugh

My mother told me that the bacon was there to make the liver taste nice and I wasn't allowed to leave the table until I had eaten it. I had a system though - I would get a pint glass of water and cut the liver into tiny pill sized pieces, then swallow each piece of liver like a tablet until I had "eaten" it all!😂

Thepossibility · 01/04/2023 22:43

Weird orange smoked cod that had something that I was allergic to so often woke up vomiting after, so was always dreading eating it.

RaraRachael · 01/04/2023 23:00

We had very samey meals. Every day some sort of brown meat - chops, mince etc with tinned peas or carrots and boiled potatoes followed by a milk pudding like semolina or tapioca. I still hate most of those foods due to the sheer monotony.

She occasionally broke loose and made something "exotic" like chicken supreme which was basically pieces of chicken in a white sauce with boiled rice. Beyond bland.

110APiccadilly · 01/04/2023 23:06

Anything my dad made, bless him. He'll eat anything. Which means his bar for an edible meal is very low. The white sauce that had acquired the consistency of glue will never be forgotten (except by him as he ate it and didn't see what the problem was).

Vargas · 01/04/2023 23:18

Iceberg lettuce, watery tomato and cucumber salad with thousand island dressing EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.
