Awful meals your parents made as a child - lighthearted

I remember my mum used to put half a tomato on any meal that didn’t have veg, I hated it, still do.

Bread and butter pudding made with skimmed powdered milk, absolutely disgusting!!

Tuna sandwiches in my packed lunch that had not been drained properly, so all the bread was wet and soggy - everyday!

Do you have any to share

My Gran used to boil ordinary long grain rice in unsalted water until it was stodgy and then give it to me for ‘afters’ with a spoon of golden syrup ora dollop of jam - the texture was horrible.

OMG you’ve just triggered a memory, I used to get this. Rice pudding = cooked long grain rice with a spoon of jam on top.

Half a baked potato with a teeny tiny scraping of butter and lots of salt. For tea after school. With nothing else. Eaten with a teaspoon.

Porridge made with water and salt, and again, nothing else - no milk or sugar or anything nice.

🤮

Kidney
Liver
Tripe
Kippers in milk

Throwaway0323 · 01/04/2023 17:26

Liver and onions. We hated it all of us (5 kids) but we were forced to sit there until we ate it.

I have never ever cooked it for my kids and wouldn't knowingly cook something I know they hated.

Spudlet · 01/04/2023 17:27

Potatoes, bacon and onion, sliced up and layered raw then cooked in the oven, I think. God, it was so slimy it makes me want to heave even now.

TheVanguardSix · 01/04/2023 17:29

Corned beef
liver and onions (hell on a plate)
Could be worse.
Mum never chose the ox tongue at the butcher’s so… there is that.

Oh god I got herring in milk too. Revolting

Lesina · 01/04/2023 17:29

My much loved father was a bit of a loon and he would regularly concoct meals straight out of hell, the one that particularly sticks is minced beef mixed with scrambled eggs served with artichokes and boiled carrots. Stuff of nightmares

ProseccoOnIce · 01/04/2023 17:32

Pigs trotter soup (as a stock ingredient)

Cheese Egg (known as boiled eggs with cheese sauce).

Semolina topped with whipped egg whites & grilled.

My dad ate tripe Shock

Purplecatshopaholic · 01/04/2023 17:33

Most things tbh, although liver and bacon, and beef olives come to mind right away. My mum could do a decent roast chicken, and made great birthday cakes, but actually cook she could not! She admitted once she took cooking lessons when she first got married - it was a lost cause, and I loathed most veg, and many other things for years until I realised they tasted fine if cooked right…

PaperNests · 01/04/2023 17:33

Chicken and rice boiled together with tinned fruit cocktail. The whole thing was weirdly sweet, salty and very slimy. Fish boiled in milk with boiled cabbage. Also boiled pigs livers and I can still taste the liver mixed with value diet lemonade as I tried to cover the taste, we couldn't leave the table until we'd finished it. I've been vegetarian for 30 years and I'm pretty sure my mum's cooking is why. She tried her best but it was terrible.

RunnyPaint · 01/04/2023 17:35

My first stepmother insisted on us cleaning our plates, and also insisted on that gristly grey mince that you can't chew and cheap tinned creamed spinach that tasted off. According to my father, she was a good cook for the adults, but gave us kids revolting food instead... I refused to eat mince or spinach for years, as I had no idea that they didn't have to be disgusting. Most of the rest of my family (including my dad) are/were pretty decent cooks.

I can be a bit hit and miss, so I wonder what my DD will remember of mealtimes when she is older?

gogohmm · 01/04/2023 17:35

We ate plain food but thankfully not the horrors I'm reading here regularly. We did have some serious misses though when mum was on health kicks mostly involving dried pulses not being soaked or precooked properly and no decent seasonings to make them palatable. Oh and I still hate liver

Leah2005 · 01/04/2023 17:35

My bf at work, her mum used to do minced beef and mashed potatoes. Not as a cottage pie, just separately on the plate. My bf always hated those nights and it always sounded like my idea of heaven 😂

Georgiepud · 01/04/2023 17:35

Grey stews, always with floating lentils.

Brendabigbaps · 01/04/2023 17:36

Steak but well done! Grim

BrowniesnotBlondies · 01/04/2023 17:36

Liver risotto (made with long grained rice and bacon). The rice stuff was OK and relatively tasty...but the liver....urghh
Liver and bacon casserole....vom
Steak and kidney.

Movinghouseatlast · 01/04/2023 17:38

Cheese and Onion. Cheshire cheese and chopped onion boiled, BOILED I tell you, in water. It was just horrendous.

bellac11 · 01/04/2023 17:38

Liver and bacon

I cannot abide offal, hate the texture and taste and she would insist that she had cooked it 'nicely' so I should like it

Bleugh

Always4Brenner · 01/04/2023 17:39

Stew in our house dumplings I loved but it was always fatty meat which I refused to eat I lived off vegetable for years because her stews and meat were just awful. Fried potatoes swimming in grease.

burgledinParis · 01/04/2023 17:39

Tuna mayonnaise and tinned sweetcorn baked potatoes. I know some people love them but just beurk beurk beurk. Still can be in the room if someone is eating tinned tuna because of the smell.
