Flour isn't safe?!

bettybear21 · 03/02/2023 10:52

So I only found out the other day that you can get food poisoning from flour as it's raw? Did anybody else know this as I didn't!

In which circumstances would you eat raw flour?

I'm struggling to think of any.

ToddlerTerror · 03/02/2023 10:54

@FinGizz when baking a cake for example, you might taste the raw batter.

And that is a risk worth taking 😋

Christmascracker0 · 03/02/2023 10:55

Yeah if making cookie dough to eat raw it’s suggested to toast the flour first.

vodkaredbullgirl · 03/02/2023 10:56

I love licking the bowl out after making cakes, raw egg.

Scalottia · 03/02/2023 10:59

Licked the bowl countless times - even as a small child (thanks mum for the delicious memories!), never once got sick. Raw eggs in there too! I wouldn't worry about it.

Hadalifeonce · 03/02/2023 10:59

@Follycastle
Agree entirely, I've been eating it for more than 60 years, despite raw eggs and raw flour, I am still alive to tell the tale.

Well kids in nursery's make their playdough from flour and we all know kids stick their fingers in their mouths!

Licking cake bowl is half the point of making cake!
The other half being hot cake obvs.

I've been licking the bowl my whole life and never gotten sick which is why I was so surprised to find out the flour can make you sick!

Yes, you need to cook it separately before making edible raw cookie dough.

Me too and I ain't stopping.
I'm 67 and not dead yet. Did have salmonella once from pancake mix I'd left out of fridge, that was the eggs and very very unpleasant and my own stoooopid fault. But cake mix - yum yum YUM.

Nookable · 03/02/2023 11:07

There are some recipes for cookie dough which is intended to be eaten raw. They just have an extra step of heat treating the flour to make it safe.

ByTheGrace · 03/02/2023 11:08

Isn't that an American thing, like their eggs needing to be refrigerated?

I've seen recommendations to oven heat the flour on American recipes for quite some time, but it's only crept into UK thinking fairly recently.
Slighty off topic, but I was also told by someone who imports teas not to ever use cold water infusions, unless they were specifically marketed as such, because teas need boiling water to kill any bacteria.

BringOnFebBankHoliday · 03/02/2023 11:16

Secret confession time - I sometimes mix up a sponge batter just to eat it myself. I don't actually bake a cake! I don't do it very often, but when the mood takes me - which may be today 🤪

Cake batter with raw eggs is doubly deadly. That's why I always boil the eggs first.

WandaWonder · 03/02/2023 11:25

I presume when licking the bowel you are not eating enough to harm you?

But I thought modern eggs were safe , no not a joke thing I heard something a while back but not sure how reliable that info is

We use 'red lion eggs' which are very low risk for salmonella, they come from vaccinated hens so this true :)

And you have the double bonus of protecting yourself from harm and adding tasty chunks of eggs to your cake.

Licking the bowel? 😂

evtheria · 03/02/2023 11:30

I absolutely love cookie dough batter, but googled why it wasn't safe to eat lots (as my mum always told me off for it) and discovered it was more the flour than the egg, as I had assumed.

To make edible cookie dough, the flour should be cooked in the oven (but not too toasted), spread out on a tray, before being used.

Flour hanging about in the air is also an efficient explosive!

Yes but it depends on how much is left in the bowl.

Ewwwwww, missed the spelling mistake lol

'I've been licking the bowl my whole life and never gotten sick which is why I was so surprised to find out the flour can make you sick!'

Oh my God that's horrible!

Just flush it or get yourself some Toilet Duck - much more hygienic (and has a nice lemony flavour into the bargain).
