Flour isn't safe?!

So I only found out the other day that you can get food poisoning from flour as it's raw? Did anybody else know this as I didn't!

Yes, there have been e-coli outbreaks linked to raw flour. Anything you eat comes with a there's a risk it could be contaminated and raw

Follycastle · 03/02/2023 11:34

Raw red lion eggs are now safe to eat, even for children and pregnant women.

I’m happy to dice with death on the raw flour point. Yum.

Sorry, the screen kept jumping about but you get my point

Secret confession time - I sometimes mix up a sponge batter just to eat it myself. I don't actually bake a cake! I don't do it very often, but when the mood takes me - which may be today 🤪

Love this! Perhaps we should all dispense with actually baking the batter and save the fuel costs.

gogohmm · 03/02/2023 11:37

Most things could give you food poisoning but most things won't! Dry flour in a sealed container isn't a danger food.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 03/02/2023 11:46

Yes, there was something about this on a tv program.

But the absolute best bit is undercooked cake mixture, hot, out of the oven.
Mum and I frequently make ring cakes - that is, a normal cake, with the undercooked middle scooped out shortly after removing from the oven.

ferneytorro · 03/02/2023 12:01

Another pleasure potentially denied - been eating cake batter probably for 45 years. Although i also used to eat raw bacon rind as a child (only don't do that now as we don't have it in the house) so I may not be the best person to ask!

closingscore · 03/02/2023 12:07

Well I've been licking cake bowls since I was knee high to a grasshopper and I've never been poisoned by it in over 50 years, so I don't plan to stop now.

crazeecatladee · 03/02/2023 12:12

How can flour cause food poisoning? No bacteria involved. The worst it could be is the fermentation of raw flour in the gut (try putting some flour in a small bowl mixed with a small amount of water and leave for a dy. It will end up foamy. So, that in your stomach might b uncomfortable but food poisoning......nah

LadyLaLaa · 03/02/2023 12:14

Flour is also highly flammable under some circumstances 😀

It's a thing
My local cake shop sells cookie dough but the flour has to be heat treated first

wonderstuff · 03/02/2023 12:22

I’d imagine it’s pretty rare, under certain circumstances can’t it hallucinogenic too - seem to remember bread being linked to Salem witch trials for this reason?

wonderstuff · 03/02/2023 12:27

Had a Google, e.coli outbreak linked to raw flour in USA in 2016 led to FDA issued warning. No UK concerns but FSA advice to stay clear as potential for harm.

NotAgainFrederick · 03/02/2023 12:31

You can get food poisoning from anything. Does the flour look not right? Is it damp? Are there flour weevils in it? Are you going to eat a whole bowlful of flour?
If not the risk is absolutely tiny. If I was undergoing chemo I would avoid licking the bowl of cake batter. Otherwise a normal immune system will be fine.

That is caused by a fungus. Flour now would not be made with a fungus growing on it. And if it was it would be sold for extra money under the counter.

Wonnle · 03/02/2023 12:36

I'd be more worried about breathing the dust in to be honest

hugoagogo · 03/02/2023 12:39

When mine were little and I made pkaydough the mixture was always cooked. So no problem with that.

crazeecatladee · 03/02/2023 12:39

@wonderstuff If it's only one case of contamination in the whole of the USA over 5yrs ago - then I suppose, yes we should worry. The likelihood of another case in the next decade is infinitesimally small. Think I'll go and play with the traffic!

Hadalifeonce · 03/02/2023 10:59

@Follycastle
Agree entirely, I've been eating it for more than 60 years, despite raw eggs and raw flour, I am still alive to tell the tale.

Me too - for nearly 68 years.

Easternext · 03/02/2023 12:47

FinGizz · 03/02/2023 10:53

In which circumstances would you eat raw flour?

I'm struggling to think of any.

Well in our nursery we make the children playdoh we always have to bake the flour for a few minutes first before making it for this very reason!

mindutopia · 03/02/2023 13:06

One of the highest risk foods in terms of food poisoning/contamination are lettuces and bean sprouts and we eat those raw all the time. Life is full of risks. I'm gonna still be eating cookie dough though!

MichaelKeaton · 03/02/2023 13:26

Ah bugger it, there’s risk with everything. When I was pregnant I’d eat sushi and steak tartare, which has raw beef and raw egg, because the risk is minute. In the UK the sushi grade fish has to be frozen first so it’s safe. You’re no more susceptible by being pregnant. The only thing I avoided was pate, which was hard.

Let them eat batter.
