Does people from UK like to eat dates? Are there many date shops in UK?

OP posts:

No. And no.

sevenbyseven · 02/10/2022 17:15

I love dates although probably only buy them a few times a year. You can get them from any supermarket so they're quite widely available Smile

wizzywig · 02/10/2022 17:16

Yes, around Ramadan and eid you'll find them stocked more widely

LemonMuffins · 02/10/2022 17:26

The UK isn't really a date country, which is a shame because good ones are delicious.

People sometime buy them at Christmas but you don't generally see people eating them.

I love them, but I've lived in the Middle East, so that's why. You will be able to find some in supermarkets and probably some nicer ones in the big department stores.

AriettyHomily · 02/10/2022 17:33

I grew up in ME, everyone raves about the dates. They're not for me.

Around Eid you can probably pick them up in Tesco

slo · 02/10/2022 17:34

The only nice ones are Waitrose Lovelife Medjool dates in the box. The rest are dried out and nasty.

TwocksAway · 02/10/2022 17:43

I just buy my deglet noor dates from Tesco, the whole foods bit. They are so moist and sweet, very moorish! I blend them into healthy date ‘caramel’ or eat topped with almond butter and a pinch of salt. Delicious.
Every time I eat them I can hear my old friend saying ‘you can survive on dates’. Google tells me she is right!

AnnaMagnani · 02/10/2022 17:43

They buy dates at Christmas.

There are date shops in very Middle Eastern areas eg Edgware Road but in the wider UK population, dates are for Christmas or a cake ingredient.

FayCarew · 02/10/2022 17:47

They're stocked in many supermarkets. Local middle eastern and asian shops usually have them
I love them, but in the UK they are often disappointing

sevenbyseven · 02/10/2022 18:04

I get Medjool Dates from Tesco. They're delicious. If it's for cooking or baking though I buy smaller cheaper ones.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 02/10/2022 18:06

Unlikely to find them in Whitehaven, OP! Other than at Christmas!

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 02/10/2022 18:07

I buy them at Xmas just because I feel like I should, but I don’t really enjoy them. Even the super posh fat medjool ones.

The most disappointing mouthful I ever had was what I thought was a little pig in blanket (sausage in bacon) but it turned out to be a date (devil on horseback?). Nearly vommed.

The only exception to my date hate is sticky toffee pudding, but they have to be chopped very finely so as not to get those hairy/papery bits stuck in your teeth.

Cookerhood · 02/10/2022 18:08

All supermarkets do Medjool dates - delicious. I have a large tub of them from Costco that I'm munching my way through. I like one with my coffee in the morning.

fairgame84 · 02/10/2022 18:09

You can get them at sainsbury's and tesco all year round.
DH is north African and eats them but he's the only person I know that does.

InsertSomethingMotivationalHere · 02/10/2022 18:10

Co-incidentally, I bought dates for the first time time ever today as DP announced out of the blue he fancied sticky toffee pudding and I said I'd give it a go. Bloody amazing, nicest thing I've made for ages!

maximist · 02/10/2022 18:12

I love dates! Especially with the stones removed and stuffed with marzipan then sprinkled with icing sugar.

Ooh I love marzipan. Where can I find those dates please?

polkadotpixie · 02/10/2022 18:16

I love dates! I buy them at our local international supermarket

dizzydizzydizzy · 02/10/2022 18:17

I love dates too. Occasionally treat myself to a box of medjool.

cheapskatemum · 02/10/2022 18:18

I love dates and am from UK. I eat them all year round & use them in place of sugar to sweeten desserts, such as sticky toffee mug cake. My favourites are Hadrawi & Zamli.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/10/2022 18:18

Depends on where you live. We've got tons of Indian and Turkish supermarkets around, so apart from the overpriced standard supermarkets, we're never more than 250 yards from dates.

Not found a date I didn't like. Much nicer than raisins or apricots.

Did no one else read this as when you are on a date, would you 'eat' your date or even go on a date to eat.

My mind is a bad, bad place.

Howyoualldoworkme · 02/10/2022 18:27

I've had some gorgeous treats from here

@Howyoualldoworkme those are stunning. Do they taste good too?
