What's your favourite thing to barbecue?

We've just got a gas barbecue, really looking forward to trying it! What should we cook? Give me your best barbecue recipes! We're not really fish eaters, we'll try most other things though. And while we're at it, we have some venison steaks in the freezer, do they barbecue well?

Or not tuna steaks, seeing as you don't like fish!
Nectarines are amazing on the bbq!

gattocattivo · 30/07/2022 19:16

Aubergine 😋

BarrelOfOtters2 · 30/07/2022 19:21

Halloumi
butterflied leg of lamb
spatchcock chicken
beer can chicken
for fish eaters…frozen salmon fillets straight on bbq.

ThreeB · 30/07/2022 19:23

Cauliflower steaks with feta and oregano. Hubby is a full on carnivore but even he loves it.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/07/2022 19:27

I like to make Greek souvlaki. Very easy marinade. Pork is best but chicken is good. Serve with tzatziki, feta salad and flatbreads.

Longdistance · 30/07/2022 19:31

Kangaroo steaks. Marinade in red wine and black pepper 👌🏼

We’re currently bbqing in the garden. Minted lamb steaks, steak, Lincolnshire sausages and chicken breast.

Dilbertian · 30/07/2022 19:31

Halloumi. Brush with garlic-infused olive oil first.

Ditto corn on the cob.

Banana. Peel back a strip of peel from one side, cut away a wedge of banana and stuff the gap with choc drops, peanut butter and dried fruit of choice. Replace the strip of peel. Place on foil and bring the foil up and scrunch it together to make handle.

Asparagus is nice given a quick griddle.

TaVeryMuchLove · 30/07/2022 20:03

Courgettes. Just cut straight down the middle. Delicious.

AiryFairy1 · 30/07/2022 20:13

Ribeye steak, chicken skewers, cheese toasties on malted bloomer (tied up with string like a parcel so the bits don’t fall out - cheese, tomato, onion, butter on the outside)

BBQ gas is well expensive at the moment

Anything you'd cook in the oven can be cooked in the BBQ if it has a lid. For over 3 weeks, all meals (except re heats or breakfast) have been on the BBQ. Here are some ideas. Generally wrapped in foil with a sprinkle of oil, or in an open oven dish with foil and spray oil to stop burning/sticking:

  • green beans, runner bean slices or asparagus with prosciutto, bacon, and/or onions
  • peeled, cut rounds of parsnip or sweet potato with rosemary
  • baked potatoes which I par cook in the microwave for 15-20min depending on the size
  • Chicken thighs or breast. Ideally marinated overnight with fresh garlic, soy sauce, sugar, lime juice or vinegar or similar but with BBQ sauce for a smoky flavour
  • Slices of aubergine and/or courgette. Sprinkled with pepper, garlic and onion powder, grilled on BBQ, then either goats cheese, Parmesan or feta on top after cooking. Italian herbs sprinkled on top after goes well too.
  • Large mushrooms. Remove stalk and chop, add spring onions, crumbies, pepper, garlic/onion powder and put back into the mushrooms then add a cheese on top. Stilton or grated cheddar works well
  • Obviously steak, sausages, burgers, lamb, pork etc can also be cooked on a BBQ.
MarmiteCoriander · 30/07/2022 22:43

Another- those mini, snacking peppers. Cut the very top off, and fill with a mix of cream cheese which had been mixed with finely chopped spring onions or chives, garlic/onion powder and pepper. I've found BBQ'ing them in a cup cake pan helps keep them upright and the cheese doesn't spill out.

Tip- I don't use the garlic or onion powders with salt added, otherwise, things would be FAR too salty. Just use the plain versions and add salt if needed.

Corn on the cob!

Itsadoglife · 31/07/2022 00:02

Salmon fillets in foil with a little olive oil and seasoning 😇

Furrybutts · 31/07/2022 00:21

Green, red and yellow peppers, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes on the same skewer.
Soak in soy sauce for an hour beforehand

It's the same as everything else though really, isn't it? Nothing is cheap anymore. Yesterday DH got a 13kg bottle of patio gas from Go Outdoors for £78 I think he said.

Thanks for all the ideas so far! I'll definitely have to try courgettes, we grow them in the garden and every year we end up with so many that everyone we know is begging us to stop giving them courgettes 🤣🤣

@ThreeB do you have a recipe link for those cauliflower steaks? Please and thank you

Asparagus wrapped in Parma ham.

Halloumi wrapped in Parma ham.

Huntswomanonthemove · 01/08/2022 19:04

Sirloin steak, lamb chops, pork chops, all from a decent butcher with plenty of fat on. I also like peppers, corn on the cob and asparagus done on a BBQ. Having said that, ours is charcoal, which is believe to be far superior to any gas BBQ.

CakeCrumbs44 · 01/08/2022 19:11

I did halloumi for the first time a few weeks ago and it was delicious. I actually used aldi "grilling cheese" which was less salty than halloumi I've had before (good thing).

I like wrapping salmon in foil with spring onion, ginger, chilli, garlic and popping the whole lot on there

Pineapple slices with cinnamon sugar

Chiliprepper · 01/08/2022 19:15

Love these pork and pineapple skewers
